Retro video game shit you can't get over.

Bad trades, letting friends 'borrow' games, getting into collecting too late, spent too much money on over hyped games, lost, broken, stolen games, botched repairs, etc.

Tell me the shit that haunts you to this day.

Only real regret is donating a nice CRT graphics monitor thinking I could just get another one since i had randomly happened upon this one too, so surely there are more out there. Then while I was gone it seems the wheels of the world kept turning and I wasn't on the bus, and so I've never seen another one again.

Similar regret but modern, I bought a gsync monitor back when they were new and it was cash. Got the upgraded replacement only to learn they took out the 3D support. Still angry because I'm one of the rare few who likes 3D TV and games.

I've gotten rid of stuff here and there that was not sold for high price or that would be worth way more now, but why obsess over it? Shit's in the past, gotta focus on the future.

i kinda started really liking small CRTs if I have them set up properly, like at a small desk and using them for 2D stuff like Famicom or microcomputers.

Regrets:
-letting my dad throw out my original NES when it started getting the blinking light
-not going ass-deep into Saturn collecting when I got one off of someone I knew who was selling it to buy a Dreamcast. Got some nice games with it, but didnt buy any of the cool jap shit I knew existed at the time.
-tripping on a shitty sidewalk while trying to get to somewhere fast and chipping my GBA Micro's faceplate, dropping a flashlight on my Intellivision and denting it, my GameGear falling out of my dads van when I got out onto some rocks, just various fuck ups cosmetically damaging my stuff.
-Got a Vectrex without a controller for free. had a chance to get a complete system for 100$ at my local game shop and passed on it when I could have gotten a controller that way and had a back-up system.
-Putting back the copy of Chibi-Robo I was going to buy and getting Unlimited SaGa instead.
-really, really wanted a 64 Disk Drive back in the early 2000s and kept looking at them on ebay, but just never decided to buy one.
-Not buying the Hori GameBoy Player controller for 12$ when at the New York Nintendo World Store.
-dicking around and not preordering the RPGs that Super Fighter Team released before they cut off the preorder date.
-buying Segagaga when if i had waited a week later I could have gotten the special edition box set version for like 10$ more.
-not getting the CDi Nintendo games back in the 90s when I was aware of them. (have them now, but still missing Faces of Evil)
-not tracking down more Game&Watch games in the late 90s when I started getting nostalgic for LCD games

Basically most of my regrets were caused due to my mindset of "il just find it someday for cheap at a thrift store or yard sale" and not utilizing the internet to buy stuff in the late 90s/early 2000s except for random things.

>sold most of my collection on eBay between 2013 and 2018
mostly games, some handheld systems but my logic was that I could play it all via emulation or backups. I made a couple grand but these days it would've be worth $10k or more.
>donating CRT TVs/monitors that I didn't have space for
when moving between a bunch of tiny rentals. Should've stored them at a family members place or something, oh well.

Luckily all this barely matters, I have nice consumer TVs, a functional CRT PC monitor and ways to play backups on all my consoles now, all I'm losing out on is a nice shelf of rare games to brag about. and the nostalgia of having the carts I played as a child.

going to be honest, the tape deck is way more valuable than SNES games in terms of practical value, especially as time goes on. Don't feel too bad about that one.

I miss being able to buy games for $1~$5. If I had known there would be a boom in retro shit, I would have kept the games and saved up money instead of trading in the ones I thought I was done with. Same thing with vinyl record collecting, cause old people would die in the neighborhood and their rock music collection would wither away in the rain on the street or kids would use them like frisbees. One time an Atari 2600 with a shit ton of games was thrown away and I considered it old people shit so I walked away from it. Some kids set the box on fire and smashed anything that did not melt. I wanna bet a lot of us think back to those days and physically shrivel up like a raisin thinking about all the shit we could have kept and made money on in today's market.

No kidding, I paid 50$ for mine. That was high for a tape deck 5 years ago, but I knew what I was looking for. A big pro to having a high end deck is when you get your hands on a really rare tape that's moldy, shedding or worn out you can re-record it to a decent blank and swap the tape.

Competition is fierce these days. I've found decent 2 head decks with Dolby C and bias fine tuning on the front at thrift stores. Seems most of the 3 head decks get snatched up quick. Internally bias it to TDK D's and then fuck with the fine tune for any other tapes. It is a pain in the ass to bias a tape on a 2 head deck with all the test tones, rewinding, fast forwarding, etc but you can do it. Best of luck anon.

I threw out 2 barely used crt's that I had brought brand new, I just assumed these things would always be easy to get and they had what I would now consider pretty minor problems. Its worse knowing that the ones you can get now are pretty worn.

I might as well have been on house arrest for all of 2020 because I don't have my own car and I my mom stopped letting me borrow hers during the initial covid histeria. I live out in rural country too and taxi's aren't a option for picking me up at home.

Took me a while to realize I had to stop checking local ads for game stuff because I just couldn't go out and pick anything up due to that. There was a real fucking bad one where I found a listing by some old boomer that was obviously cleaning out their kids bedroom or something and was trying to unload a fucking goldmine of gamecube stuff for only 200$.
It was like the console, 3 controllers, 2 memcards, a GB player+disc, Wind Waker, The Zelda Collector's disc, Twilight Princess, Mario Sunshine, TTYD, Animal Crossing, both Metroid Primes, Pokemon XD, Melee and a couple other 3rd party games.
But I just could not convince my old woman to lend me her car keys no matter what I did so I had to let it go. After that I realized I just needed to stop checking things.

Made me really think about just getting my own car but I wouldn't use it enough to be worth it since I just walk everywhere I need to be. Thankfully now my mom's jaded and redpilled about the pandemic so I'm back to using her car when I need it even though things are way worse now than they were back when she was hysterical over it.

There was a listing in my area a couple years back for an "Xbox TV", it looked kino but I think I was hesitant to pay like $50 for it and drive over an hour to retrieve it so I let it go. Now I wish I had that thing I bet it was fucking kino

Based indeed. Friend gave me road rash for n64, didn't play it till like a year later. The black cartridge and fire with chains on the label made me think it was a wrestling game.

Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a fucking motorcycle melee game

I started collecting big box PC games just this year, I wish I still had the ones I owned as a kid, I really wish I had Majesty and Dungeon Keeper the most still.
My biggest problem is I live in New Sealand and because of that I can basically tell that some old games have probably never come to my country, like I know I'm not going to ever find a copy of Warwind or it's sequel, and importing a copy is like $50 just for shipping, it's ridiculous.

Interesting. I suppose this does pertain to the topic.

I'll contribute with a related story. I was very young, bored in the car. Thought it was a good idea to fold up a gum wrapped (foil one one side, wax like paper on the other, JuicyFruit?) And stick it into my pokemon blue cartridge. Then proceeded to put in in my gba and turn it on. It erased all of my data and I just remembered being so upset I just sat the and looked at that new game text for minutes in silence

That's the biggest one. I could've had a pretty sizeable collection, even with my minimum wage pay if I started when I was 18; which was 13 years ago. The second thing is letting my grandma convince me that I should cut the fronts and backs off of all my n64 and genesis boxes to save space on the entertainment center, since the game's all that really matters. We probably cut up like forty something boxes. I still have them in a ziplock bag somewhere.

-Letting friends from high school borrow games and then falling out of touch and never getting them back. I've lost FF2, Ehrgeiz and Super Mario RPG to this. Not expensive games but it pisses me off.
-I bought a X1900XT when it was first released around 2005/2006 for something like $650 CAD to play Oblivion and I paired it with a CPU that bottlenecked it because I'm a dumbass. I still have the card but it's now a paperweight and it's the reason I almost never buy anything new.
-I threw away some N64 controllers with loose sticks back when I was too stupid to realize I can fix my electronics myself
-My parents gave away my Sega Genesis. It had video problems so they took it to someone to look at. He said it was busted. I later on got another Sega Genesis from someone else and tried the original A/V cables on it, and it was the cables that were fucked and I'm pretty sure the console worked fine.
-I left a complete collection of Nintendo Power and player's guides for a shitload of games, including Earthbound, at my old bedroom at my mom's house. Out of spite she threw them all in the garbage. This one actually hurts with worst and makes me rage when I think about it, because of the nostalgia and also they were worth a lot of money.

Could've bought Terranigma when I was younger. Remember seeing it on the shelves alongside Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. It looked so fucking sick, but I knew GnG had a good reputation. My dad would only let me choose one and I decided to go with Super GnG. I love it and remember spending all month trying to beat it, however it would have been better if I picked up Terranigma, as it is so rare and acclaimed by SNES fans. I also would've played it without the hype of knowing what I was getting into, which would've lead to me enjoying my experience so much more.

If we are also listing good deals:
>be me as kid, got an N64 for christmas
>friend had it a year before me, already had Banjo and Gex 3
>my friend was selling some games, my grandma gave me money to buy some from him, could get 2 of them
>bought his copy of Banjo and Gex 3, both came in hard plastic cases, may have been like 25$ at the time in total, good deal since they were still fairly new games.
>some time later, buy a used copy of Glover
>same friend sees me playing Glover and for some reason is super interested in it, i tell him il trade it to him for Mario Kart 64. He takes the deal.
>sometime later still, he is at my house and sees the hard plastic cases I got from him when I bought his 2 games. Thinks they are really cool.
>tell him il trade him one in exchange for the Glover I traded him. He takes the deal.

Same friend:
>he had Link's Awakening on game boy
>I had Kid Icaurs on game boy
>traded him Icarus for Zelda
>few months later I bought Icarus back from him for a dollar.

Many, many years later with same friend
>gets Fire Emblem for Gamecube as a random christmas gift
>he hates turn based tactical games
>trade him a duplicate copy of Mario 64 I had that I got for 5$ at a thrift for it.

Even he admitted years later he was pretty retarded with games. His dad convinced him to throw out all the cases for his PS1 games to "save space" and put them in a binder and cut the cables off all his lightguns to use as props.

I sold an Atari Star Wars color vector arcade game for a couple 100 bux back in the 2000's that would be worth a few thousand now because I needed the space. Just the color vector monitor in it is worth a fortune.

On the plus side, I did get an Asteroids for $100 just a few years ago at an auction.
