I may have gone overboard again. The Option is really fucking strong.
Thankfully if I just scale back how much energy you get when you shoot guys it should be a little more under control, but right now if you can get an Option, a stack of missiles, and laser... It's just like Gradius when you're fully decked out, holy shit.

It's kind of funny because the shareware episode of course needs to basically have a "distilled awesomeness" vibe to it because it's the best commercial the game can have but I spent half a decade wondering what all kind of exciting things Shores of Hell and Inferno would have and boy were they a let down. Still good tho'.

Duke Nukem 3D was a bit of an exception since while Hollywood Holocaust and Red Light District were really strong levels, the rest of the episode kind of peters out and Shrapnel City / The Birth are more consistent imo.

Hell, even with Blood it felt like the first episode was really good, yes, but the others weren't imo that much worse.

It looks really good but now I need to make sure that it's reasonably balanced. At least a little.
One thing I'm hung up on is whether or not the Option should use extra missile and laser charges when it fires off. If you don't have those the Option is free to use cus it shoots the same weak bullets you fire if you have no ammo.

Well here comes this remake out of nowhere. I had ZERO idea that there was a remake in the works, and it's a damn good one at that. I don't even remember how I learned that I had received a remake for free. I can tell you why I don't know.

For anyone interested, I've just put up a J.A.C.K. FGD on the Violent Rumble Mega folder. It gives an error about a wrong character, but the line it gives doesn't make any sense and I haven't actually had a problem so whatever. Trenchbroom FGD is also updated with rail_through on relevant things and some missing default health values.

Anyone trying out PRCP2? How is it going for you?
Got to 3rd map now, so far not a fan. MAP01 is nothing special, just a stroll through some caves without any interesting traps. The author of MAP02 seems to be too fascinated with Doom Builder's curve tool. Combat is more fun than first level though. Also, what the fuck is that par time of 0:06?
So yeah, something like that. Tbf I never was a big fan of Plutonia and inspired mapsets, but I liked the introduction of PL2 or first PRCP more than this.
Oh, and where's new music? It's literally Plutonia midi pack, for the first 3 levels at least.

so that playthrough, I've watched the whole thing. he triggered the exit on Rusty Bucket through the wall just like the previous streamer. that could do with some fixing. I can do it if the RBB anon isn't around.
on your maps there was a monster_spawner crash and some infinite health vial (both on secret) and the previous guy had some massive slowdown on wager around the time the gaunts appear. mentioning just in case.
also there's an inconsistency between regular and quick grapple, with quick grapple automatically releasing on touching a wall. might be the reason for quickly losing all charges on steep inclines? not sure if intentional, probably does more harm overall.
I also don't think volleys causing the crazyass strafing on enforcers was intentional, as fun as it is. volley grunts could probably use a delay between shots, but that one's up to you. and I think "grapple denied" used to be quieter in early versions?

I played the earlier beta compilation, and it feels like a mixed bag for the most time. Some maps are fantastic (18, 20, 29, 31, 32) some are hot garbage (24, 25, 30), most are okay, but nothing special. The weirdest of the bunch are Plutonia 3 rejects - nearly all of them are long as fuck and plays nothing like Plutonia at all.
Also, I can guarantee that nearly everyone will hate map 22. It cannot be described by words alone, it's just has to be seen to be believed

Same anon here, so I jumped straight to MAP22 but lowered difficulty to HMP just in case. Now this is what I expected from a Plutonia-inspired wad. Constant bombardment with traps, cruel enough for such late slot. Revenants plus Archie in a small room with two tiny pillars and a hurtfloor - you get it. One part assblasted me though:

Been playing Doom for a while but never like this. Just finished first three episodes of Doom on UV with pistol starts and no saves. Made it a completely different game for me. They might tone it down a bit in RC1 or difference between HMP and UV is really that huge. But my UV run of that map was an miserable experience. An archvile ambush for every ten steps, extreme ammo starvation, obscure progression and all of this in cramped, dark hallways. It's like someone consciously tried to make the least fun level they possibly could. Though, the first PRCP also had map like that (in 19 slot, if I'm not mistaken) so maybe it was a homage? Who knows.

Well, while he IS my character, a lot of aspects of him are a result of some good ideas my friends gave me. So he's pretty much a physical manifestation of the friendships I've made doing all this Doom modding stuff over the past 7 or so years: His initial design was a product of Shivers, his name was thanks to Term, Ultra64 refined his armor and him putting two dot eyes on his helmet gave me the idea for the uncanny drifting eyes. Another friend gave me the idea of him running a bar in his spare time. There's a lot of other shit that I've given him sure, but some of his strongest aspects are thanks to my friends.

Originally he was never meant to be anything and Combined_Arms was just gonna be Doomguy using all those weird weapons, but Arti just kinda insisted himself into all of this. I wouldn't change that for anything, just like the people I've met, the shit I've learned, and the friendships I've made.

You could take a look at how Aliens TC solved that issue.
There's also the SCREENSEEKER flag for projectile to generate a homing projectile. Iirc you can also adjust its seeking cone and homing aggressiveness; however when a projectile is too fast, it can't turn in time to become an actual seeking missile, so I think that might even be what you want, i.e. set the angle at spawn and fire from there in the direction of the enemy.

I loaded it up on UV and played thru it just now, I died a couple times early on so if your shotgun game isn't good then it might be worth it to go for the megaarmor and scream thru the teleporter to get to bridge switch, grab the soulsphere and the invuln, clean up the red key room and then grab the ssg in the last area so you have more firepower. I'm going to try that strat right now.

The secrets were all pretty easy to find except for the last one, you have to pay attention to and wallhump the pillar with lights on the bottom, which gets you the last few imps and a soulsphere. I had to look this up in the wiki, it's a pretty nice trick though I dunno how I feel bout its exact implementation.

MBF21 is one thing, DEHEXTRA is another.

Understanding the eggheads making sourceports correctly, while it adds a lot of functionality for the user, for the guy who has to put the engine together, it's a complete shitbiscuit to actually implement and then also maintain, because it isn't actually a sane format, it's DeHacked but even bigger. The Eternity guy isn't even going to add it to his port.

I genuinely think that it would be for the betterment of everyone that DEHEXTRA was thrown into the trash and support for it was removed, and instead it was replaced with a straightforward coding language which a human being could actually implement, maintain, and also write code for without a workaround like DecoHack.
Yeah, that means a bunch of people are gonna have to redo the code for their mods, but it hasn't actually been used by many people for very long, it'd be a small price to pay that would give returns.

Basically I want to find an engine where I can do a total conversion mod and essentially make my own FPS that can be played online with friends (with my own models/maps/etc)

Whats the best engine or devkit or whatever to achieve this? Ive messed around in GZDoom, Quake via progs_dump, but Im looking for the most "dummy friendly" engine to do this in that would support MP with the mods I make.

I started getting into retro shooters with the personal rule of only saving at the start of levels, so dying means starting the level over. I got through pretty much all the old games I played no problem with this rule (Doom 1-2, Duke, Blood, Shadow Warrior), but now that I'm moving on to mods, megawads, and new retro-style shooters ('Dusk' on Cero Miedo, 'Amid Evil' on Evil, etc), this rule is starting to get me wrecked, since they're longer, more intricate, and overall just harder. I want to ease up the restriction a bit, but not make it too easy.

Interesting topic, I think there's a few levels to saving. Saving when you get keys or other essential objects makes saving fairly rare. Saving whenever you are about to open a door or jump down a place you cannot get back from or other points of no return makes saving more frequent. The most frequent saving I can allow myself is whenever I am not at risk of dying. That means I could go AFK and not die.

Again though, try out GLES, and submit feedback about how it works for you, so that they can develop it further.

(You) expect it to do hardware rendering (everything about the engine and map format was NOT designed for this, it is a very forced affair compared to Quake and onward), 1080p or higher, 60FPS or higher, on very highly detailed and heavily populated user maps and the entire game logic being reimplemented as interpreted scripting, and that should just work perfectly on any possible hardware because the original game is from 1993. I didn’t like the characters too much but I wasn’t aiming too high for those anyways. The sprite/texture work is great, the guns and mechanics for them are basic but fun, the level design alternating between open and linear areas were great. My least favorite parts are when it “buildquirks” up and has some ion bow shoot off to the side.
Blood’s my favorite because it’s the best “notEvil Dead” game. I think I find Shadow Warrior and Ion Fury to be “the best” build games now.

I honestly found IF outside its shitty characters quite good on two deps, amazing level design which I think they go even further. Its almost art and build is great.


But I had fun fighting, it just needed better low end enemies maybe. The tank dudes are really meh.

Shelly really needed a slide and a quick melee button. Also the disc bombs while cool are not as fun as pipe bombs.

It's not just about the quips, it's about their personality, it's their voices and attitudes. Just the simple little thing of Duke going "Hehehe, what a MESS!" or "DIE, you son of a bitch." adds this delightful little flavor to the game, or the way he shouts in pain. It's like the icing on a cake, the most insubstantial component by weight and labor, but it adds so much to the final result.

Could the enemy roster have had a bit more versatility? Maybe, but I wouldn't trade Duke as he is for that.
