Bros it's not fair.

>15 years ago you could walk in too Goodwill and find an N64 with like 10 games for $20.

It's fucking bullshit, I hate scalpers

>> No.8525443

So collect something else if it's purely about collecting for you. For me it's bottlecaps. If it's about playing then emulators and flashcarts fulfill practically the same purpose.

haha i knew that this day would come,i snatched it all up in the mid 00s,dreamcast bundle for 5 quid in my local cashies,a bust neo geo aes for 20 quid i repaired,a mega cd from ebay for 25 quid,ps1 with vandal hearts and suikoden 1 for a 10er,an amiga cd32 for 15 quid with a dodgy disk door that was an easy fix and even a boxed in sellophane TG16 for 50 quid.

had plenty of bargains back in those days and will be soon time to cash in,pay up pay pig

todays trash is tomorrows retro anon,ps3 games are worthless atm but give it a decade or 2,even NES and SNES games was considered trash back then

also if you wanna collect retro buy busted stuff and try your hand at repair, most retro stuff is easy to fix,cap replacement or bent pins on the cart slot or a fuse is usually all it takes to get a old unit running again.

you learn a new skill and you get a console collection at a fraction of the price, its what i did.

You will hate me for saying this but collectors are a bigger cause of this than scalpers. Collectors are the ones buying up everything they can then locking it away in their vault forever. Competition among resellers pushes prices down and keeps games in the market. If there were no secondary market a lot of these games would have just been thrown away.

It's a pointless fucking hobby that was made unapproachable by resellers who do this in place of a real job. Just buy an everdrive. It will serve you a lot better than a shelf full of plastic cartridges that you're only ever going to play a fraction of anyway. If you really need to show off your ner power level, get a shelf full of merchandise instead. There will still be resellers trying to profit from that but at least the approachability hasn't been completely and utterly decimated by resellers and it's a lot more sensible than buying game carts when there are solutions for playing retro games on real hardware that will only be a one time fee, and you can play hacks and modern retro releases on it as well.

It just depends on the console you choose to collect for. Goodwill gets in random things all the time. The 2600 and Xbox One games are pretty inexpensive at this time.

Yeah and then you realize that even when when you own it and want to play it you end up playing it on emulator 99% of the time.
Sold most of my stuff at a neat profit.

If i'm buying anything physical nowadays it's because it has cool extras, isn't emulated properly (rare outside of niche stuff) or isn't dumped at all.

>>8525453
People chasing that original childhood feeling are already far gone.
To me there is no difference to the feeling of getting the physical machine again as an adult and emulating it.

>> No.8530065

Things that are old and not in print gain value. Scalpers may have played a role in prices raising faster, but this was always the destiny of retro games.

Even if you collect physical I would recommend emulating. I do enjoy playing on original hardware, but all of these things will break in time. Disc rot, consoles breakdown, and the more people who play them, the smaller the supply will become. You wouldn't open original star wars toys to play with them. Most people don't play vintage magic cards for the same reason.

The problem with emulsion with my opinion is that it's hard to be motivated to play anything when you have everything. Most people who use Netflix or other streaming services spend their time browsing and deciding what to watch before eventually going to bed and watching nothing. Humans don't like to have too many choices. If you approach emulation with reservation and discipline, you will have a better time.
