A decent number of well known NES platformers based on western cartoons are considered good to great. Are there any Japanese anime based platformers which also play well? It seems like some anime got shoved into the JRPG pit (DragonBall after game one), while others had terrible platformers or action games (first Hokuto no Ken game, Around the World in 80 Days)

that The-Three-Eyed-One or whatever its called is one I see often brought up. The Lupin the Third game is pretty alright. Does Hello Kitty count? Couple good games based on that stuff including a Balloon Kid reskin.

Great Battle Cyber is a platformer/fighting game-ish hybrid based on SD versions of popular anime (Gundam) and live action shows. It partially counts, I guess - the gameplay is decent enough, I guess.

Besides those you mentioned, I thought of obake no q tarou, which is not great, and gegege no kitarou which is pretty fun.

ULTRAMAN and Gundam in the same game?
>>8507834
There's a ton of licensed BANDAI titles from the early Famicom days, but most of them are rather primitive. Gegege No Kitaro I believe got a reskin here as something else, and is probably the most playable. I'm a big fan of Shen Long no Nazo / Dragon Power, despite it being total garbage.

Yeah, there's a bunch of Great Battle games with the same theme, mostly for SFC, I believe. There are also some dodgeball games in the spinoff Battle Dodgeball series.

Mitsume ga Tooru. Good game by Natsume/Tomy.

I've always wanted to check out the Mahoujin Guru Guru games. They couldn't possibly screw up a RPG based on an manga/anime created to parody RPGs, right?

Magical Taruruuto-kun games seemed not so bad to me, although it's been a while since i've played them and they also have JRPG elements to some degree.

KeroKero Keroppi is a cute little platformer with Sanrio's frog mascot.

Some Doraemon games are great, try SNES tetralogy.

I guess a Sega Genesis or TurboGrafx-16, and then just ignore whatever RPGs and Disney games they have (but on the latter, it's your loss, Capcom made some oddly good videogames with Disney properties in the 80s and 90s).

Obake no Q Taro is called Chubby Cherub on the NES. People hate that game but I like it, it's a very obviously early NES game that doesn't do a lot.

Hokuto no Ken was much better on the Sega Mark III. That was the one that came out on the U.S. Master System as Black Belt.

Ive been collecting a bunch of these and they are pretty solid. There are 2 on famicom, 2 on gameboy and at least 1 on super famicom and they are all decent enough platformers, though they have some more reading requirements then most pick up and play jap only platformers.

The one thats most interesting is the Game Gear game which plays like a parodius style shmup.

Devil Hunter Yohko for Mega Drive played (and sounded) good but the level design isn't too remarkable, it's basically Valis under a different name

>Japanese anime based platformers which also play well
very rare, the manga and anime adaptations were rushed out and worse than their western counterparts for the most part. Some of the shonen power battle series got passable SF2 clones in the early 90s (ranma, YYH, etc) but before that there were a lot that just got "original" action games that were rushed and sometimes incomplete kusoge.

Stuff like dirty pair, outlanders, 3x3 eyes, and countless others are absolute dogshit that the creators distanced themselves from. No one has fond memories of the escaflowne or evangelion games either. Japan had their own domestic equivalent of LJN, and far more of them. The manga authors often distanced themselves form the games they inspired.

I think there were good-ish Macross shooters for PC Engine, Saturn, and PS1

worst wrestling game of all time and the worst toys of all time. Like all NES games it was limited to the two buttons but one of them was wasted on a fucking jump button. All the power movies can only be executed after catching the booster ball power up.
