Yep, devs definitely wouldn’t have used more powerful hardware with higher resolution spritework if available at the time. They liked limiting themselves and their creations for the sake of artistic integrity. That’s why they never moved on to developing for newer hardware when it was available.

I actually think it fits this particular example. it's works for when you have cartoon graphics with limited shades. it doesnt work well for DKC, because DKC is meant to look like 3D. for DKC, I'd pick something that creates smooth gradients. what would that be?

4xBRZ looks rather nice in some contexts.
Look at the definition on the crab's claws and eyes, the Sprite's dumplings, the weapons. The edges of the leaves stand out crisply over the backdrop. The numbers on the hud don't quite fare as well, but the characters and scenery look great.

Works well for cartoony games with broad outlines like Mario World

Most people are still on 1080p SDR monitors, and that's just not enough to work with to truly capture how a CRT behaves and looks. Even 4K arguably is not enough, at least for slot mask TVs. All you can get are varying degrees of approximation and compromise.

Some dudes are claiming a 4K HDR TV can get pretty close to emulating a Trinitron, though.

Some enhancements work well. Uprezzing 3D games, for example. Eliminating wobble in PS1. I would even say textures and sprites look alright with 6xBRZ in 5th gen and later.

But SNES filters look bad. There isn't enough source data for AI smoothing.

All upscaling algorithms feel like they were designed for Super Mario World and nothing else. They assume a "naive" approach to pixel art in which each pixel is either part of a line, part of a curve or part of a region of flat color, and that each pixel in the input neatly matches to a pixel in the output. They can't handle dithering and small-scale detail and they especially can't handle the "half pixel" technique Japanese console games used.

Worse is that they only correctly resolve a shape 70-90% of the time. It's better for an image to look consistently low-res than inconsistently high-res.

They can and should do better. Retro gamers treat CRTs like a magic black box; nobody ever asks why it makes pixel art look better and "because they were designed for it" isn't a satisfying answer, especially when CRT filters get used for LCD games.Neither is "because it lets your eyes fill in the blanks", because a simple Gaussian blur could do the same thing. It should be possible to isolate each element of the CRT "look", determine how and why it contributes to the final image, and re-implement them in a way that surpasses a CRT.
