bullet hell bullshit isn't allowed on /vr/
this is a classic shmups-only board

MAME, it has an UI fork called shmup mame. Probably not up to date but you'll get all retro cave games up to DDP daioujou/ketsui. So if it hasn't been updated since last time I checked, you'll only be missing out on their 360 (deathsmiles, daifukatsu) and phone stuff.

Maybe Xenia or shmupmame? I'd personally buy them as they come out on steam. Unfortunately they've only released a few games.

Yeah I got Shmupmame but it doesn't even show games like Muchi Muchi Pork as available. It's not compatible with many of Cave's games.

This. The Cave CV1000 hardware came out in 2004, which is 3 years after the /vr/ cut-off.

You fuckers posted GBA here waaaay before it was suddenly considered retro out of nowhere, I say Cave games can get a pass because they still pretty much play as retro.

I paid a bit over $250USD and walked up snowy hills for the DLC to Muchi Muchi Pork; the game was worth it. The game is interesting since the game features fat girls which is pretty rare but kind of gross. Maybe regular MAME since it has been playable for a while now on it.

cave runs now but mame had to get rid of cave emulation for awhile because they at the time got current arcade boards running and it helped rape arcades

I use MAME
I also tried Retroarch with some success but MAME is better in the end. If you want to get it working with modern peripherals very easily without bloating your registry with 3rd party adapters boot MAME through steam.

>pre-bullet hell
I resent that bullet hell is treated as the natural evolution of the genre when in reality it fucked it up.

>> No.8475516

Shmupmame is still the champ even though it’s missing a lot of later games. Some of them do run in normal mame builds (esp2 for example)

>it fucked it up
Shooters were dying/dead before bullet hell came along. The genre became oversaturated, peaked, then fell off and found a core audience to sustain it after the casual players left it for other genres. Bullet hell is popular with fans because the games tend to be dense with varied scoring systems in ways older shooters weren’t. How many times can you remake Gradius or R-Type or Flying Shark anyway?

>> No.8475682

The real shmup killer was first person shooters. Nobody wanted to play boring ass 2D shmups anymore when you could be playing Doom, Quake, Duke3D, Goldeneye, Unreal, Halo, etc.

>> No.8475702

>>8475682
There wasn’t that much PC/console crossover back then, and shooters were an arcade genre. Fighters are most likely what killed them in terms of operator revenues.
