This is probably shit most of you guys already know, so feel free to skip this post.

However, lately I have been putting some minor thoughts into what generally makes for an enjoyable Doom level or .wad and compiled them.

>Generally a good idea to create any given map around having a pistol start.
>Give the player appropriate tools for the enemies they'll encounter. Shotguns and Chainguns for fighting weak enemies, plasma and rockets for fighting stronger enemies. Don't make the players fight Barons with a shotgun too many times.
>Sometimes -- more is more. Two Hell Knights can be more engaging than a single Baron of Hell or having ten zombie men vs a single chaingunner.
>Spectres, Pinkies, Hell Knights and Barons are the best at controlling player movement or locking them out of rooms temporally.
>Explosive barrels make groups of weak enemies, especially hitscan, less tedious to fight
>Be aware of infighting when deciding enemy placements. Mancubi are generally some of the best infighers. Followed by Barons, Arachnotrons and Revenants.
>Pinkies and Lost Souls are great for curbing player usage of the rocket launcher when necessary
>Partial invisibility is only really useful against hitscan
>obvious, but be aware of map flow. establish goals early on and make puzzles solvable
>make damaging floors in a level or .wad consistent. or at least mark them with the warning signs.
>aesthetics are important. break up samey areas with decorations, differing textures, carpeting, nested textures and varying light sectors.

anyone else have some tips they'd like to share?

one thats often neglected in even the best WADs.
knowing when to force a pistol-start.
some maps you make will be totally broken with a huge load-out and 80 rockets and 400 cells,so killing the player when you need to is a good idea, even if it stings to lose everything when you aren't used to pistol starting, don't so it every other level, but after like 10 and you want to start more fresh, its a very good idea.

I'd say Pinkies are the least intimidating at that, unless you mean absolutely flooding a room with them (in which case most other enemies are the same). Knights/Barons are too slow in their movement for that purpose as well. For me it'd be Chaingunners + Revenants

Somewhat related, but I’ve noticed how much I like pinkies when they’re between me and an elevated threat launching ranged attacks. They can shoot right at me while the vertical aim assist wants to aim at the closer pinkies.

>>8472935
>I'd say Pinkies are the least intimidating at that, unless you mean absolutely flooding a room with them
yes.
Pinkies are good threats vs players early on when they're underequipped. Even a couple of Pinkies or Spectres can really slow down a player if all you have are a shotgun. It helps that they're fast and can swarm a player in smaller arenas and rooms.
Hell Knights and Barons are an variation of this somewhat. They're both beefy, but they're also slow and not too terrible threatening (compared to Revenants missiles, Mancubus fireballs and Arachnotron plasma), so you put a couple in a doorway and block a player's entrance or exit.

Sounds like those awful graphical modes that somehow look even worse than various jank on Unreal Engine.
Actually, since I've mentioned it... Is there a way to learn about this trend that gave birth to Doomsday's & Dark Places "HD Packs"? Like, how those came to be and were rightfully abandoned. What would be a good start? I suppose people quickly realized that not every game needs to be remastered, yet alone remade (which ki-i-ind of happened anyway, depending on your perspective), but I need to know for sure.

>> No.8474215

Gzdoom. Zdoom is discontinued and you can make gzdoom look retroish with software rendering and low resolution. Neither can record demos nor has the correct rng dmg values, so there is no reason to use zdoom over gzdoom. New gzdoom has even better compability with some older zdoom wads as latest zdoom itself. Only thing that zdoom is needed for nowadays is lilith.

GZDoom if you want a modern port with mod support. ZDoom (the port, not the tech) has been obsolete for years, though some new retro-fitted derivatives are currently in development, namely RetroZDoom.

Mind you, your choice of sourceport really depends on how you wanna cater your experiences. If you looking for Vanilla accuracy with some QoL features, go completely old-school or just want things optimised fully that fixes the Doom engine's old quirks and bugs and fuck around with mods?

It's a bit of a loaded question, anon.

It's a middle ground, offering some nice features while keeping the retro look and feel. It also has a built-in WAD launcher, and I can't emphasize how useful this is. That GZDOOM, arguably the most popular source port, doesn't have one is baffling to me. No need for yet another program to act as a frontend. DOOM Wiki has a list of all it offers; https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Retro

The only thing that I would want from DOOM Retro is Heretic, Hexen, and Strife support, although it will play Chex Quest, HacX, and FreeDOOM.

What the shit happened to the mouse sensitivity in eduke? Before, I found it perfect without ever needing to adjust it, but then some months ago, the new versions just go and cripple it. No matter how much I try adjusting the settings, the sensitivity never feels the same as it did before. And the new nblood versions, being built off those obviously, get hit too. And with the new update to Ion Fury, it got this shit too.

Goddammit, I can't keep using the same old builds forever. I need to figure out how to get the sensitivity to feel exactly the same as it did before this mess happened. Any ideas?

Well, how about a spray feature which rather than pasting a stored image, instead paints one with little 1x1 squares corresponding to a value you feed it.

The player would have to have the image converted to a value the script could read, and then setting up a bind which provides that value.
Obviously everyone would have to have that .pk3 loaded, and there would have to be some sort of defined limit in size and current sprays so that nobody comes and mwee.png's your game.

In extreme cases, GZDoom stuff can be a bit too far removed from Doom to really have that "but in doom" feel anymore, IMO. Like how no one would really call a UE4 game "but in unreal (the game)"

>> No.8476657

It all comes down to execution, but usually, creative liberties need to be taken with the source material for it to translate well into doom. If no liberties are taken, it usually ends up terribly. I'll cite that embarrassing touhou mod as a case of not enough creative liberties being taken for the mod to work.

ok I effectively UNBLOATED and UNFUCKED Led's Generic Weapons Mod.
Pistol, Assault Rifle and Minigun all use the same shared bullets as ammo.
also made that you start with both Pistol and Assault Rifle as it makes sense to be the default basic loadout of a marine, primary weapon and sidearm.
making the Zombieman drop the Assault Rifle was dumb anyway first of all because defining a new enemy type would have given problems with monster bestiary mods and also made no sense anyway because in 99% of wads right in the beginning or somewhere in the first level there is a zombieman that would drop a rifle anyway so no point imho might as well just have both as your starting loadout and let the zombieman just drop clips.
the minigun you get it as pickup or as drop from chaingunners.
also deliberately shamelessly stole the mugshot from Trailblazer and put it in there and stole the additional crosshairs from Brutal Doom v21 and put those in there as well.
made this for my personal use but if anybody wants it I can share.

The only thing Chocolate Doom actually has to do at this point is to remain functional on current machines, so until there's problems with running it on like, Windows 12 or something, I can't think of any reason to keep updating it. It replicates original .exe functionality 1 to 1, like intended, so I'd rather he work on other stuff.

perhaps it's because its UV equivalent is actually UV-fast, but to me supplice is too intent on murdering your ass to feel like doom
you have to play carefully and semi-tactically like blood on higher difficulties, because a group of zombiemen or an unchecked chaingunner can melt you in half a second, and the other monsters have really aggressive behaviors that make them lots harder to deal with than normal doom enemies. if it had jumping and crouching, there'd be no resemblance to doom at all.
rekkr on the other hand through and through feels like doom gameplay, just from an alternate universe

>> No.8477184

Eternity has been around almost as long as ZDoom and its family of ports, but people have just made way more stuff for Z, not just gameplay mods but even mapsets, some which are actually great.
I'm glad Heartland is good, but it'll probably take more than that for people to pick it up. I remember people complained about Eternity's options menus being doody when they were playing Heartland, and that's something I think the engine could improve on.

For MBF21, I think that, along with UMAPINFO and DecoHack for writing quick and easy basic stuff, is gonna take away attention from Eternity, but it's almost certainly taking attention from GzDoom mapping as well, because that's a whole pile of useful and practical features which have inexplicably been relegated to advanced ports only until VERY recently.
If you wanted to define your own episodes for a Boom style mapset in as late as 2019 (22 years after the source code release of Doom), or just add a basic decorative actor like a tree or ceiling lamp without sacrificing something that already existed, you plain had to go fuck yourself, because MBF and PrBoom+ had ZERO provisions for that.

i associate doom with simple, readable, easy to bait out and easy to dodge single projectile throwing enemies
the fundamental gameplay is a breeze, it's the map design that can make it difficult
supplice's fundamental gameplay is a lot harder, so instead of designing the maps to screw you over, they have to arrange the encounters to accomodate those stronger enemies so it isn't unbearable
it's a bit of an inversion, and i like it, but i never felt like i was playing doom

That's true, and I certainly would still take points off for it despit me finding it interesting, as its intentionally adding something that wasnt in the original. But my point is that the maps that are super accurate to the original with only small deviations that would require a direct comparison to see them end up being the least interesting to play. Sure, the mapper has proven they have a very good memory (unless they outright looked at the original for reference while making the "from memory" map, which also goes against the spirit), but why should I play their recreation instead of the original if its essentially the same thing?
The most interesting "from memory" maps for me the ones that show a clear display of genuine misremembering of major sections, like where rooms are located in the layout, or their overall design.

While Ad Mortem is fun, it's nowhere near even runner up quality. There's been many dozens of community projects this year: dbps, dbk's, wadazine's and all those dw ones that didn't even get mentioned. What makes Ad Mortem so special, that it goes above those? It's not like it even tried to be cacoward material. Amateurish maps weren't polished causing uneven quality, and there's no gzdoom support even though it would be possible with little tweaking.

As for Auger Zenith, it did get silver cacoward, which is a lot considering the quantiny of quality projects. Even ones on 21 for 2021 are nowhere near bad. Their quality is well above of some actual cacoward winners of 2004-2015. Also their position on page doesn't reflect their position on top list (all silver cacowards aka runner-ups are equal with each other, as are the golden with each other) .

As for Violent Rumble, it's been quite loved on Quake Community. It has half of consists of quite mediocre and outright bad maps, but the great ones outweight the shit ones. Coffee Achiever's maps are better than many AD maps, and that's quite an achievement.

I would need to play it again more slowly on Wrecker as I just pretty much rushed it on Brawler/Fighter in order to actually appreciate each map more properly. i'll also chime in there are many things you can do to further tweak how challenging a wad is; e.g., playing saveless, or even d2all.

personally, the more i've played, i also have fun with things like tysoning certain maps as much as possible, or pacifisting the uv max as much as possible. these are things that make doom very different from other shooters.

there's so much depth in doom not just in terms of wads, but even how you approach them yourself. many wads are fun on HMP and lower difficulty. anon above mentioned dimensions; recently, zzul (dimensions creator) was playing dimensions on stream on HMP, and it was really great; most people hadn't seen it before and he was explaining how HMP is a really fun time for him and he wished more people tried it. sometimes i casual play maps on HMP and it's indeed fun, even maps that i also play uv.

I just remembered i had a dream that was like this:
>Map is Dead Simple but with bright blue textures
>It plays like the original but after you kill the Arachnotrons, walls lower to reveal a giant Revenant chasing the player
>The big skelly isn't just a stretched up Revenant, his sprites are detailed and well drawn
>Find a room with some invulsphere and just shoot plasma at him in some balcony like area, until he explodes
>Go to a portal that just opened
>Another copy of Dead Simple but it's brown and orange, as if it was using Quake textures
>There's a bunch of lost souls with different colors
>They try to push me from hitting the switch but i still do it, even with them trying to drag me from it

Still, my God, they nailed the atmosphere and look of Ukrainean towns with later Rovno maps. there's a lot of issues about how id now tries to connect modern doom to/reference classic doom but making the cover doomguy as the same guy as the one you played as is like the least of the issues

I'm partial to top second-from-left, which seemingly turned the eye switch into a nose+mouth. Neural networks seem pretty promising for textures already. I'm currently experimenting to see if I can take one AI-generated monster sprite and turn it into a remotely-convincing animated sprite sheet. There is a surreal conceptual appeal to a janky AI-generated walking animation which doesn't quite move properly. Also going to see if I can get any half-decent neural weapons, only eight to work with and small sprites don't work as well often.

From preliminary experiments, it seems like there's a sweetspot in the region of dozens of images, where if you go above you end up getting blobbier averages rather than more distinct outputs. The way I generated the earlier set of neural enemies was including only a single front-facing sprite from each enemy, except for the Hell Knight and the Shotgun Guy where I decided to use partial-death sprites to prevent biasing the algorithm with near-redundant sprites.

>I do not know where to start. I saw the schematics,” he said. I asked him to explain. “We are the Dark Young,” he said. “It’s us.” He said marines were being fitted with ‘bad blood, bad bionics.’ Then he opened his shirt to show his sternum. I … need to leave this place. I’m leaving now.

With that "mysterious voice" situation and how people react at TAG2, i feel like IF there ever is another Doom game, it should just have a different take on the setting because if anything, building up a universe/lore is the actual off-pattern action when previous games have their own canons/aesthetics/styles/etc and most id franchises had their premise created out of emptyness.
It would be easier to see Doom as a setting that is awkwardly presented, because its messyness inspired reinterpretations and creativity for years.
There's a danger to see a series being rebooted too many times and giving too much creativity but if a certain line is met, it could help Doom break out of an enforced set of rules that wasn't there to begin it.
It's a way to look at art like pic related and certain mods.
Simply adding something like a new mechanics, design or concept already feels like expanding this series.
If people were more invested in the setting, they'd only see contradictions and more problems.
Besides that, we had people already exploring the setting as seen in some mods and fan content.

The idea is to pander to the few weirdos who want "world building" and "story" out of their "arena FPS" by wringing some lore from the writers over a weekend. That's how sad ranger dad came to be.

seems most people don't want to point out that id franchises fell for the same traps as other media and chased trends
i guess the fact that people expected doom 4 to flop until it didn't led to a pendulum effect of "it's the one franchise revival that returns to the roots and improves the franchise" when in actuallity, it's just the one that does that trick well enough to even cynics and people who are usually more aware of some stuff than others
there's crowbcat making a positive video for doom 4, then there's people who take their criticism skills from "the good youtubers i like" and /v/ and have to assume "doom is literally berserk and devil may cry and shin megami tensei and" because they don't want to admit that hugo martin might like a mcu movie or two
all in all, these are still good games with new enjoyable features but there's still some things i wouldn't call improvements
then again, i unironically enjoyed eternal's platforming unlike most people

agreed,nu-DOOM lore isn't that interesting, the only part that gave me basedface was doomguy being confirmed to be the same guy as the classic games, which is just nice to see,and gives a good reason to use the classic skin.

pretty good,it does have gameplay modifying parts to it,but the base just adds frames, and extra smoothness is always welcome.

im neutral on the platforming, its a necessary evil to pace the gameplay.

It's a much better alternative to splice up a linear shooter than slowing down for dialog or elevator segments. Vehicle sections are pretty tired at this point, too.

>Once I hit par time nightmare mode turns on.
Sort of like in those arcade games where the timer hits zero and suddenly all remaining enemies have double speed
