according to HG101, there's a Mac version that has a butt-ton of new features. We should try telling the devs to bring it over to Windows for all to enjoy.

Personally I played them like this:
1-3: FM-Towns (Trilogy)
4: DOS (with xu4 and upgrade patch (latter optional))
5: DOS
6: Nuvie (can be used for Worlds of Ultima 1 & 2 as well)
7: Exult
8: Pentagram

I'm not even going to touch 9.

Doesn't xu4 already replaces the graphics? Or am I mistaking something here? It's been a while since I've played Ultima 4.

Martian Dreams and Savage Empire aren't playable with nuvie yet.
I recommend getting the FM Towns files of 6 for nuvie since it has better sound and optional speech.
The fan patch for 5 is pretty essential since it adds sound. The ones for Underworld and World are less crucial but worthwhile when you want MT-32 sound.

The C64 version of Ultima 6 sounds almost unplayable since you need to flip disks for every dialog.
DOS emulation isn't that bad, you just need to twiddle around with the speed. The engine remakes eliminate the need for emulation as they run natively on modern systems.

You can kill Lord British in battle in Ultima IV for the NES. (NES version has a very JRPG feel, btw.)
