I hated this change at the time because the motivation is to take everything moody or interesting out of 64's unique style and make it more consistent with the model standardization going on at the time which wasnt just NSMB but also Luigis Mansion and Mario Party 4. Notably though Dorrie's old design did appear in MP4 & 5, albeit not technically in the flesh.

I've come to prefer the yoshi styled dorrie by now but I dont think a 64 remake was the place to standardize stuff. its like remaking a zelda game in one of the different styles, imagine an oot remake in the toon style. then again mario had already made all stars long before 64ds so its not unprecedented here.
