This isn't like that though. OP's image replaces different blocks that were identical-looking in the original game with different-looking blocks in addition to increasing the detail level, which is how it ought to be done.

Of course the specific result in the OP image is ugly (whether intentionally or not), but it doesn't have to be. (Not that SMB needs repainting to begin with, but maybe some games could benefit from this.)

Dolphin has an option for dumping textures for the purpose of editing them and packaging them back into a texture pack for the game that will automatically be loaded instead of the ROM's textures. That's how people do shit like picrel (though I think VJ's texture pack was done with AI upscaling and smoothing the original textures rather than replacing them by hand). imagine Mesen is the same but with sprite sheets?

You're gonna be biting off more than you can chew if you really want to mod the games themselves, but anyone can make a dolphin texture pack if they just have the patience to edit hundreds of texture files.

Really doesn't look that great. I think maybe if you took the original Metroid graphics and then touched them up with the shades available on the NES (original hardware limitations be damned), to create more shades and detail, that would look a lot better, use some dithering while you're at it, but keep it the same resolution. Maybe also tweak some of the animations too (Samus's walk cycle doesn't look that good, fix them and add maybe one or two extra frames, but without gong full on Bouncy Hat Mario).

That's all going to a lot more work than just cutting and pasting Super Metroid assets into Metroid, but it's also going to look a lot a million times better. Sticking to the original palette I think will look better, even if you aren't limiting yourself rigidly to how many colors an object normally could use.

I'm a big Metroid fan. I owned and beat everything up to Metroid Prime and Fusion. The 8-bit original Metroid isn't that great. When I played it as a kid I had to make my own map; the weapons didn't stack, and the ice beam was shit. The graphics were inferior to everything that came later. The music (especially in the boss zones) was good, and the exploration unparalleled before then, but the Metroid HD mod just makes it better. None of the art in the original Metroid was particularly good in the first place. Compared (eg) to Mega Man*, it sucked ass.*

*Annnd it turns out they hacked Mega Man into Metroid.

Modern emulators support HD graphics packs. To my understanding, they do this by replacing what's displayed when the emulator attempts to load graphics from a sprite sheet or other sort of graphics.

Essentially, going off a sprite sheet like this (Which is mainly so that humans can visualize each "frame" of a sprite's animation, in reality all of these are compacted together in either 16x16 or 32x32 pixel chunks), if you scaled up each frame to 8x the size, redrew the sprite on top of it, and then saved it in a format readable by the emulator, the emulator would realize that when attempting to load the first frame from the game's ROM, instead load this replacement on the new sprite sheet. This is because the display for an emulator is more an abstraction of the real thing and doesn't have to conform to the limits of the original system.

Not OP, but I wanted to do an HD sprite pack for FF1, mainly because I play FF1 randomizer and wanted to make reskins of the characters from later FFs replacing the default jobs. I think it'd be kind of cool to play through it with a 16-bit look like the remakes while using the NES version or have things like Zidane as the Thief, Stiner as the Fighter, etc in an FF9 pack, or have the FFXIV scions as the default jobs (Thancred as Fighteter, Y'shtola as a Black Mage, Alisae as a Red Mage, etc).

I would absolutely love an entire Super Mario Bros. with animations like this on everything, and like maybe the ground bucks underneath you as you go (like you're walking on flimsy wooden planks), and this can cause enemies to trip, sometimes forwards to you.

This is not the one.

>>8465026
This is closer, but Mario actually left the ground mid step.

>which was just a texture/audio pack for an emulated 80's game
No, it's not, they disassembled the original game and remake it for modern systems. That's why everything, including the new hand-made animations, is so smooth.

It's basically the perfect way to remake a 2D game.

>to mod retro games into HD versions?
YOU LITERALLY CAN NOT !
HD versions? You can not draw more of the screen since like 1 sprite after the end of it there is nothing, NES Mario loads in more of the level as you go. a HD mod of it is IMPOSSIBLE on the original hardware ... and good luck rewriting the assembly code.

>with different-looking blocks in addition to increasing the detail level, which is how it ought to be done.

The most easy option is to rewrite the game from zero in a modern game engine and texture the new block whatever you like.

One the NES it is imposible !

I think he was referring to how SMBAS had issues with the physics behaving differently. I think SMB2 and 3 worked the same but SMB had differences in how it controlled.

"Neural upscale" there got me curious, I tried RealESRGAN on the "Vanilla" sample after downscaling it 4x to reflect the pixel size.

YES.
I posted this as a example. Make a mario clone in an modern game engine and start changing the textures. it is literally impossible to ad more colors to a NES ROM.
