Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread bit the dust: >>8406501

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

Thread challenge: Laguna Seca on GT2 for PSX.
>What's that?
A track and game is chosen and people can challenge for times on it.

can someone give a short tutorial on what to do first after you get put into the open world in racing lagoon?

>> No.8431924

>>8431859
For sure. The random encounters in the game work around the GET mechanic. You have some RP points, not to be confused with the Yens, you win after every encounter. You can get a bit more waiting at the starting line during races, proportional to the car you're racing against and how much you wait. Once a random encounter race is done you can use those RP points to grab a part, or entire major components (chassis, engines and bodies) from the cars you've defeated. You need to use the blinkers to challenge someone.
Just go around, get some parts and RP, and go around the various places indicated on the map for events, story tidbits and parts. Every night there are usually some rare cars going around that go slightly faster than normal traffic even when not flashing lights. The random car encounters vary every night, and you can start getting turbos in the 3rd night iirc.

My first rally game.
It was pretty complex in terms of gradual inner structure damage: after one or two stages you'd have some time to fix your car, that time was never enough to fix everything, since you had to choose between suspension, exhaust, electrics, engine, headlights, bodywork, clutch etc.
For instance, if you ignored troubles with clutch, you'd have issues with switching between gears; damaged transmission could deprive you of 6th gear (later that'd be the 5th, and so on); damaged lights would make your life really hard during night stages; electrics would influence work of wipers (which were pretty important in rainy races) etc.

Were there rally games before Network Q RAC Rally Championship that were as complex in above-mentioned terms?

Man cockpit view wreckfest is intense - it almost looks like the infamous motorstorm trailer as if done by the destruction derby 2 team at times and this got be thinking, what IS the most intense derby racing game out there? Sure there are sensible ones and silly ones but for actual balls to the wall, white knuckle, axel destroying aggression? The list shortens dramatically. Having pondered upon this for a spell my conclusion is it actually is destruction derby 2 and the reasoning why - to me - mostly boils down to the difficulty of the game being fairly high if played legit, the high speed (duh) and what really tops it off is the thrash soundtrack.

Well I decided to play NFS Porsche Unleashed on the PS1 even though I know it's the inferior version and I gotta admit this game just sucks.

Structurally it's kinda similar but execution is completely different, first you got the factory driver mode which is much shorter and just consits of basic time trials which are easy apart from the last one, the whole mode just takes half an hour to beat.

Then you got the evolution mode which is laughably easy at first during the classic era but about halfway through it gets ridiculously difficult. The fast cars like 959 or race cars are not fun to drive at all and driving around sharp corners witrh them is nearly impossible plus they are high maintenance so they are not worth using. The fast cars are unable to take sharp corners without slowing to a crawl but then you will lose races because your AI opponents can take corners perfectly without losing speed. The driving model which was taken from V-Rally games clearly doesn't match the track layouts. Then I tried quick races and even though I did no mistakes the AI overtook me by seconds.

This game just sucks, I tried the PC version right after and it felt much better. It should have been ported to PS2.
Even the obscure GBA version is based on the PC and not PS1 version.

Gran Turismo 1 is one of the easiest racing games ever if you understand how driving works irl.
No weird gameplay gimmicks, no godlike opponents, just drive the car, mind the racing line, brake when needed and win. Learn to drift meanwhile, it's very easy to do here.
It only gets hard if you do stupid shit like upgrading the engine and turbo but forgetting about good tires and suspension. So just apply common sense and you won't have trouble. Unlike more arcade games like Ridge Racer, once you get a feel of a particular car in GT1, it always handles like you expect because some crude physics simulation is applied. Maybe the game is just gayer on PC?

>> No.8450553

First time posting in one of these threads. I'm almost done 100%ing Ridge Racer 64. Overall it's a very good game with one huge flaw which is the car collision physics, it is honestly hard to imagine collisions feeling worse in a racer than they do in this game. No matter how the collision happens, the guy further ahead on the track keeps all his speed and gets boosted a little while the guy behind gets his speed cut in half immediately, and this even happens with side-to-side collisions which is bizarre because you'll just be driving along when someone passes you by, grazes you, and your speed is cut dramatically for no reason. The collision is also just glitchy in general, on one of the maps when they exit a tunnel AI cars tend to warp in place several paces to the right, and I have lost races just because someone grazed me the wrong way near the finish line. Sucks because this is a good game but it's held back a lot by poor physics. Also you might as well throw any car with bad handling into the "worthless" pile.

But it is fun, it's motivated me to play more retro racers. I did beat Beetle Adventure Racing some time back but I don't get why it's so praised, levels are too easy and overly long IMO. This style of racer isn't bad but how this game executes it kinda bores me.

The skid pan tasks are very precise at times which makes them challenging. The real trick to the evolution races is to tune your car - namely you'll generally want to stiffen the suspension as it is very soft out of the factory. Sort that and you'll fly past the a.i.

My favorite way to play NFS:PU's Evolution Mode has become to find and buy used cars for the absolute cheapest price possible.
It requires repeating a lot of races just to have enough cash to buy extra cars but at least every time you put up a car for sell you get a new batch of cars to buy (even if you cancel your listing right away).
Managed to get a GS Carrera 2 for as little as $14k, a 914 for just under $4k and a 911 Turbo 930 for about $36k

Perhaps it is how you are mentally visualising the car and its interaction with the track? Ultimately the secret to all racing - but sims especially - is not what is happening right this very frame, but what is going to happen in the upcoming ones. Understanding - or at least conceptualising - when you need to turn, touch the brakes etc etc so the car ends up at a given point on the course (with the ideal goal being bang on the racing line) is the core of understanding racing and is what the GT license tests aim to teach the player. Reacting to the now is too late.

While not GT this webm somewhat highlights the point i'm making by the exaggerated nature of the steering wheel showing the effect - the player is turning way in advance of the corners so the car aligns correctly when under full acceleration so the player isn't constantly fighting understeer in the middle of a corner.

I wonder if this phenomenon is more prevalent in players who play the sort of genres where movement is essentially a binary on/off state (like many fps games or fighting games) which doesn't apply to racing where the entire point is things in motion stay in motion even without input from the player. It will also mean you won't really be looking at your car, rather the road ahead.

Wipeout is one of those games that exaggerates this due to speed and its physics model - by the time you see the corner it is too late to avoid it.

You need to use something lighter anon, you are light on the brakes but the R34 is obese and it loses you time between the braking adjustments mid corner and the sliding. Doesn't seem to suit how you're driving.
You can gain a lot of time by being a lot more confident on the brakes.
Other than that try using the whole track during at T1 so you can get a better exit on the last turn on the complex with a lot less braking, and brake a bit more before the first 90° corner in the forest and in the downhill one before the backstraight. You could also be more delicate during the hairpin after it so you can get a better exit. Again, you'd probably solve most of these by using a car that's not obese.

the dreamcast version of demolition racer is one of the worst things mankind has ever produced, how do you fuck up that badly? it plays fine on psx for fuck's sake
i'm sure the resolution is a little higher, but the game is riddled with extremely obvious interlacing, the 'reflection' effect makes all the cars look like they're shrinkwrapped and the game has performance issues on a dreamcast, not sure if that can be mitigated with an emulator though

Just retried with an NSX and I'm still a whole 5 seconds behind you. I'm sure PCSX2's input lag and it's wonky support of pressure-senstive buttons play a part (does anyone know how to make them work with a DualShock 3 again?) but damn, that is an IMPRESSIVE time.

Analog controllers help a ton, so does not having any input lag. I'd advice against using the pressure sensitive buttons if you can't get them to work, use the right analog stick for accel/braking. Properly modulating the braking and trail braking is essential, especially so with the more lively NSX. I wonder if the RX7 might be a better option.
I've tried the Supra but while gentle to drive, it's a bit too understeery and that slows you down a ton, the best I've managed with that was 1'36.984 with no room for improvement in sight.
I apprecciate the compliment, but there are at least 0.7 secs to be found over my lap, between managing to barrel down the first section flat out, and general smoothing out. I'm sure /vroom/ will be up to the task. :)
Any decent solution to record on hardware?

Got it working. I had to patch the game then I downloaded this: http://www.zeus-software.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2500#p2500 (because after patching the game it started pestering me for a CD).

Now that I got it running properly it's pretty good. The game handles really well and it's easy to drive. Draw distance is a little low but it's an understandable shortcoming. The only problem I have is it lacks a career mode of any kind, which is a common issue with older racing games. Other than that it handles as nicely as I'd want it to.

I want to try it with my Sega Saturn controller.

Well shit looks like I got stuck in this race. You are supposed to race against a Ferrari in rocky pass but it's a ridiculously difficult race, the car drives almost flawlessly and constantly rubberbands so there is basically no margin for error. One bigger mistake and it's over.

If you don't overtake him at the beginning or if he overtakes you later just give up because you won't win. The only reason why I still have my car is because I quit the game through task manager whenever I was gonna lose.

I only managed to beat him once through sheer luck because I made him crash near the end. I also noticed it was actually easier to race him in a stock car than a fully upgraded one. I wanted to race him again so I could get another car and sell it but now I just can't win, should I just give it up?

Also doesn't help that they reused the courses from Hot Pursuit which are just too long and technical so I was never a big fan of them while most HS courses are fun and short, doing 10 minute 4 lap races in the montains and canyons just gets tedious.
