If so, you should try bilinear filtering, gaussian blur 2 pass sharp (blurs folder) or sharp bilinear 2x prescale (interpolation folder).

PROTIP: For those using CRT shaders on RetroArch, try overscaling to the next highest integer. Sure, you'll lose some vertical screen area, but it'll almost always be within the area that would have been expected to be covered up anyway on a real CRT, and not only will it be an integer scale, which keeps scanlines looking even, but you'll gain a bit of extra pixel room for the shaders to work their magic.

It’s always this Brian Eno quote with every piece of technology that gets mythologized:
> Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.

It's because Vulkan/GLCore use slang shaders, so because you're using GL, you're not seeing the same list as shaders.

>GLSL: Shader format available to OpenGL. Wide range of platforms including phones and tablets.
>Slang: New and recommended shader format, when available. Compatible with Vulkan, Direct3D 10/11/12, OpenGL Core, WiiU and Metal renderers.

Quoted for truth. These threads are silly if you think about it, because these shaders are so complex and allow you to do so much to fine-tune the resulting image that once you spend any time dicking around with the parameters until you get something you like, you end up with something that works for YOU precisely because it's all been done taking your display's quirks and calibration into account. Then we end up sharing a screenshot, and of fucking course people are going to question why you would ever think that looks good. Raw pixels would mean a postage stamp-sized, non-aspect-corrected image on modern displays. Of course, I'm sure by this you mean an image scaled through nearest neighbor interpolation for perfectly square pixels, but even that then suffers from absolutely needing integer scaling without aspect ration correction to avoid artifacts.

Thankfully, for a negligible sharpness compromise, you can employ a shader such as sharp bilinear to obtain the nearest neighbor look while being able to scale to arbitrary resolutions with the correct aspect ratio.

This. It pretty much depends on the size of the tube and TVL count. See >>8481670 for example. Same brand, same size and same mask type but different TVL count makes the lower-end consumer tube obtain a grid-like appearance compared to the higher-end PVM.

It's a look I dig, actually. The "scanlines" (i.e. the dark gaps between the actual lines) are there, but the low TVL and resulting grid-like appearance helps to blend them into a cohesive picture that doesn't look like you're looking at the image through solid window blinds.

I get that it's about autism (the bad kind), but the meme is that CRT distortion and blur work in cooperation with pixel art to create a new, "intended" asset. Seems like bullshit, though, in all cases but a handful of dithering and transparency effects. Devs created art on crystal clear PC monitors. They weren't mentally filtering every pixel through what a consumer TV would theoretically do to the image (again, handful of exceptions).

I have thought for a long time that shaders should be attempting to emulate the hardware of a crt, not the "look" of one. This is akin to how raytracing emulates the behavior of real-world photons rather than conventional game lighting, which is an artistic reproduction.

The way that MAME cores are developed is a good template for how such a crt shader should work. Their philosophy is that the code should essentially be a document representation of the hardware it emulates.

As for CRT shaders specifically, the first one that really turned peoples' heads initially was cgwg's CRT-Geom. It was basically the first scanline shader that was more than just grey/black lines.
