Lots of cool Elf PC-98 projects are in the works.

- Yu-No (release is imminent)
- Dragon Knight IV (ETA early 2022)
- Dragon Knight I is being re-translated (the retronomicon one was machine-translated + had some bugs preventing animations to display properly) than the translator may work on Dragon Knight II.
- Dokyuusei may get a script port from the remake version.

That would be me.

I've taken a look at Eve but there are two big obstacles.

First, the game engine is vastly different, and I dot have the knowledge nor the skills to hack it. There have been some attemps in the past, but nothing really concluing. The good news is that it's basically the same engine for Desire and Xenon (and probably some other C's ware games) so if someone manages to write a tool for it, other projects could be easily done.

Second, the existing translation is heavily censored and includes some working designs-tier pop jokes (and a lot of infamous Clinton-related ones). Hence the script would require a proper retranslation. I have some Japanese language knowledge, but it's too limited to tackle a huge script like that with sufficient accuracy. And a MTL-based "re-localisation" is out of the question.

After Yu-No I'll take a break, then work on a more modest project to practice a bit on the language side. I already have a few candidates.

I've looked a bit into hacking the translations of C'sware games, specifically Desire. It's pretty easy to replace text strings in the engine they use, the problem is that even with ascii characters, which are supported, the translation takes up around 20% more space. This becomes a problem because as far as I can tell, the engine only supports scripts of up to 64KB uncompressed, and the jerk who did the scripting for the original games (aka Hiroyuki Kanno) tended to use up almost all the space available, leaving pretty much nothing left for these edits. Which leaves 2 options: reduce the translation's size, or split up the scripts. The latter requires reverse engineering the format, which I've put a little effort into but haven't really made much progress.
...Although now that I look at it, it looks like only 2 files were too large to fit in the engine, so maybe I could just go and clean up some of the dialogue. I'll take a look at Eve: Burst Error right now and see if it would suffer a similar problem.

>> No.8462570

>>8462452
Looks like it's more easily doable with Eve: Burst Error, since only a few files get close to the size limit. If the translation is still too big I could remove the Lewinsky jokes, that would easily cut the English script size in half.
It's funny because I didn't even realize that this file size limit was a problem while doing my Xenon translation. Somehow my translation is way shorter than these official English translations.

I ran into the exact problem in Yu-No : some of the bigger script files made the game crash because of a memory overflow error when the text was replaced and therefore extended. The Windows version doesn't have this limitation.

That's true. And even if someone manages to implement voices, it would not match the script. There are many little differences between the pc-98 version and the saturn version, especially during the epilogue, that TLWiki extensively documented. The incoming pc-98 version is kept "vanilla", without extra scenes or revisions, and so a more than once, the voices wouldn't match what is being said.

I've been playing with the cursed emulator for half an hour now and the speed hasn't slowed down anymore than a slight dip today and I am glad, but also very scared.
Also LoH2 has a boss with ridiculous evasion, high HP and an instant kill move which always hits and can be used twice in a turn when he is on half HP. Poison in those 2 games works as a deathclock though, so you just do that and defend his normal attacks which seems to be the tactic without luck.

Maybe. I can't remember having to really think hard about my options in their games, but poison being different throws most people for a loop.
This one seemed a bit too much and the only other run I saw basically just poisoned him too (on SNES I think). I've found a tips page which recommends levels that are a bit too high imo too, but even then brute forcing requires luck. Poison is probably the intended way as otherwise you'll just curbstomp everything for a while and the odds didn't seem that low.
Other bosses seem to hit hard, but aren't that BS and require you to either outheal (which requires items in this game as spells are single charge and only recover out of battle) or outdamage.

Either way, if dialogue heavy RPGs isn't your thing, anything past 2 (still Dragon Slayer) is probably not interesting as it will focus more and more on dialogue and world building. Not that the first two are particularly worthy of note though.
The combat mechanics change heavily, with the first 2 being basic (only interesting bit is the limited usage of spells), 3-5 expanding that with battle maps (AoE relevance, range, etc) and special skills and from sky on having a sort of materia like system which need to be set. If memory serves me right, the Sky games require you to combine quartz to get enough points in elements to get spells. In Cold Rean you just slot spells, stat ups, or combination quarts thereof. Past that I haven't paid much attention.

Cursed emulator update. I noticed it got full speed when I specifically had Qbittorent open. I then decided to open another program that uses Qt for its GUI and it had the same effect.
So incase someone has that odd slowdown, open something that uses QT, minimizing should be fine. So weird.

Apart from whatever the hell is wrong with my PC/OS that slows down the emulator (and the textractor unhook), everything else went quite flawless. The only bug I came across was the credits text flickering up and down from its normal position to then rest, but that seems like a normalish bug.
Shame that it doesn't quite get punctuation for the non-mooners, but that at worst means they need to select the text for w/e translation engine they use. Can recommend for kanji farmers and should do the trick for MTLers.

That final boss was just attrition with 2 party members basically being made into heal slaves as they can't deal damage and a 3rd being set to AI and the boss can boost its speed. It had an HP stealing attack and could use the instant death spell (which would just hit) so you had to use a magic bounce spell which means you can't use magic to heal, not that normal healing is that effective in combat in this game either. So it was just spamming items and attacking with your 1 dude.

Sorry I was lazy after New Year's. I had neglected writing new line formatting into my tools until now, and didn't want anyone to experience the frustration of having words cut in half. I didn't test it after making this major change of course, so let me know if I broke something.
To make it perfectly clear, this is a poorly cleaned up/interpreted machine translation, pretty much shitpost quality. Take everything with a huge grain of salt, I don't know the smallest bit of Japanese. To release this into the wild is a crime to those with good taste, but for some reason I drunkenly ran my mouth enough to promise I would. I'm sure there's lots of spelling and grammar errors (I did the whole thing in notepad without spellcheck), and a lot of lines that I didn't bother to properly translate and just threw in gibberish. With that made clear, here you go, have fun:

Yeah it's weird since I've seen other people use the site, maybe it got filtered recently.
If it breaks let me know, adding proper line endings could've messed something up and I didn't do much testing to make sure it worked.
Maybe I'll do Desire since it probably only needs about a day's work to finish since I was able to automate most of the translation. Just looking through the scripts there's a few interesting things I've found, such as bonus post-game character interviews that weren't in any of the re-releases. Also a final monologue that I thought was added to the Saturn version in a cutscene is actually in the PC98 version; I had thought it was original content. It's also funny because the PC98 version translates the game title as "Desire ~Corrupt Spiral~", a translation I haven't seen used elsewhere.

It's the same game and story. The visuals and music are different of course, and there's no cutscenes (although the PC98 opening has a little bit of animation at one point). It doesn't have the tacked on extra ending cutscene the undermines the game's main theme either.
I wrote a quick script that looks through the windows translation and replaces the Japanese with its English equivalent, so it's nearly identical to the windows version with some margin of error for lines that are exactly the same in Japanese but different in English.

>> No.8486742

>>8486710
Yeah Desire is great, really ahead of its time in its storytelling too.
Don't be so quick to forgive my sins since I did do a machine translation of Xenon, the successor to Desire, that's Retronomicon quality. Lots of rookie mistakes made there, including but not limited to:
>Dropping honorifics, only to discover one character pronounces the main character's honorific as "-sen" rather than "-san"
>Same honorific issue coming up when the MC calls their psychologist boss "sensei" and not sure whether to use "Professor" "Doctor" "Teacher" etc.
>A twist in the game is based off a Kanji pun on a Chinese word
>Two names that have the same pronunciation but one uses katakana and the other kanji
And more but those are the funny ones that come to mind. Bonus points for the intro being a latin quote from Virgil, used by Freud, then translated to Japanese with the Japanese version being slightly different in meaning from the original. I'm still debating in my head whether the writer was simply using a different version or were responding to the original.

I did a playthrough of AmbivalenZ a while back. I would've preferred more grotesque monsters as the artist, Orion, does seem to like that stuff, but he gets held back in that regard as he is drawing for porn games. Male duendy are like this, but female ones are basically elves.
Nero (42538.jpg) is the soul of a great sinner of the same name fused with various elements from the city.
Most others look like weird oni or slightly worse interpretations of regular enemies and there aren't that many.

Alicesoft had a spin-off BL brand in the early 2000s, but it didn't do too well (to be expected desu). 2 games were RPGs, so they turned some girl monsters into boy monsters for those. His girlfriend in that is his boyfriend.

Better get to texthooking. last time I had to use a translator to help me I used textractor with google and Jdeppl with romaji and I still mostly used the romaji if I couldn't read it. It should help you understand most things though.

Also I don't know much about the homo games, but the ouji-sama games are lacking in buttfucking if that is what you are after. The first one requires and 18+ expansion disc and the other had like one scene at the end of a playthrough (could be more different scenes available). I don't know how fujos get off to gayge.
