Would it be worth it to downsize from my 27” crt with svideo and component video to the 13” triniton with component only? The benefits would be smaller and compact and probably a better mask than a regular CRT

>> No.8453153

If you can only have one or the other? Nope.
Unless you plan on moving soon keep the big telly. 13" is small and kills multiplayer games. I never in my life gamed on a TV under 19".

That seems fair, we’ve had the trinitron since 1996, but there’s talk of it being tossed so I was considering saving it

>> No.8453282

No, it's rarer to find S Video crts, keep it.

13" is pretty darn small. That is really only suitable as a very close distance desktop monitor (arms length maximum).

I've got a 17" JVC in my office for Gamecube games and it works alright at about a meter distance. I have another room with a 20" setup and that's the sweet spot for me at relatively close distance (1-2 meter). I don't currently have any CRT's larger than 20".

Screen size diagonals are deceptive, because the total screen areas squares as the diagonal increases. For example, for a 13" the screen size is (27/13)^2=4.31 times smaller than a 27", which is a huge difference.

No, small screens suck. The good thing about "retro stuff" is that one can enjoy things now that used to be stupidly expensive. There are of course smaller screens that have a unique picture and thus serve a purpose.

I have a 15" TV and I find it a bit too small for PS2 games, but perfectly good for PS1 and NES.

>> No.8456741

Too small. Maybe as a secondary/backup TV or something, maybe if you want to keep something on a desk. But for a main gaming setup it's just too small unless you're sitting right up against it.

>component only 13”
You mean composite.
Unpopular opinion but I say go for it. Unless you’re frequently playing 4 player split screen or playing from more than 8’ from the screen I think you’ll find the increase in picture fidelity is worth the trade off in real estate.

whats a good use case for a super old 2003 computer? is it worth trying to use it as a modern machine with some linux distro or should i just keep it as a museum piece off the net with WinXP or Win98SE ?

100% that tube is a composite(2) and one RF. I am using one. Its good for SNES, NES, GEN, SEGACD, and PSX. I don't like how PS2 looks but XBOX GBA emulators look good. Old 4:3 movies/tv/anime are good.

Well, 2003 hardware usually still has good Win9x driver support, so using it as a dedicated DOS/Win9x gaming machine can make sense for the handful of games you can't play on a modern Windows machine. Even when it's not very period accurate.

If your onboard graphics are DirectX 8.1 or higher you have good XP options.

You could get a rpi or a netbook or something with better perf than that box. Don't bother wasting it and it's power draw on something easily replicated by more modern hardware. I second keeping it as a old games box.

XP is a great OS for the hardware. For a use case Tiny XP is what everyone who made a Mame cab uses. Normal Xp service pack2-3 is very good for all the translated Japanese PC games( hentai).

Archive.org has Tiny XP or Mini XP and explains what it is.
