It's not about size or resolution, it's about PPI. 4k is meaningless if it's a 75 inch TV, you're not going to get good results with a shader.
When you're over 400 PPI, you get good results with shaders, specially on OLED, doesn't matter if it's 4k, 8k, etc, only the size/resolution ratio.

It matters, sure, but only in the sense of PPI. Even 4k might seem huge, but at 75 inches, a 21 inch 1080p monitor will have more PPI. Just saying "you need 4k or 8k etc" doesn't help if you're not talking about monitor size, instead just use PPI from the start.

>> No.8456501

>>8456486
Eh, maybe it might matter on super high-end CRT monitors like the Sony GDM-F520 or some such, but on more common 17" or 19" monitors, they most likely can't resolve 1920 anyway. It's what I used on my old 17" Mitsubishi, and it handled all 4:3 aspect corrections I threw at it perfectly.

>> No.8456527

>>8456501
It's not about resolving it, doesn't matter how high or low end, I'd recommend that on a TV too even if they are low TVL. It's about pixel perfect aspect ratio correction.
CRTs don't know what horizontal resolution is, but the emulator and graphic card does, so you can just increase the horizontal resolution to fit as many multiples of different consoles as possible to always have perfect aspect ratio.

With 640x480 you'll never have the correct aspect ratio, some systems used resolutions higher or lower than half of 640.
There's a reason why it's a well loved feature of RetroArch or even used with standalone emulators.

You have zero difference between 1920 or 3840 in terms of quality or resolving, both high end and low end CRTs will accept the signal too, 15kHz or 31kHz. All it's used for it aspect ratio correction when it comes to emulators.

>Are there any resolutions that you know to work better with a 3840-wide resolution than with one that is 1920-wide?
Anything that uses a horizontal resolution that you can't divide without fractions. 512, 352, etc.
There's still resolutions at 3840 that won't divide perfectly but at least you'll be much closer to the correct aspect ratio. But you can always go higher, but there's a reason 3840 is the maximum default in the UI for RA for example and 2560 is the default.

of course, even then the actual look of aperture grille phosphors would vary by size of the tube and different TVL counts. For instance pic-related is a 27" trinitron as well. Arcade cabinets are also mostly fine with higher TVL count tubes, most acrade games look great over RGB with even 600 TVL or more.
Meanwhile NES or even SNES will look like ass, RGB or not, it's the high TVL of a PVM that makes the biggest difference, thick AG scanlines and sharp cut offs.

Even concumer TV set AG tubes will give a better picture for those old consoles than a PVM. Refer to pic related for an example.

So why is, say, arcade Parodius, at 288x224, fine on a high TVL display but not the SNES port?

>> No.8456769

Source on Parodius using a high TVL CRT in the cabinet? At that time it was mostly concumer tubes.

I think anon might have confused something, arcade cabinets used CRTs for a long time, way after the 80's and early 90's, where high TVL tubes were already in use. Later arcades that actually used high TVL tubes like Metal Slug had artwork that fit a sharper CRT screen. Games like Parodius were far older though and benefited from the lower TVL, since they used a lot of dithering to melt together colours, etc, you can see it if you look up the game on a emulator on a LCD or high TVL CRT.

The obsession with authenticity over fidelity is… well, if it gives you a stiffy then go for it.
I’m not afraid of dithering or screen door effects, and using a shitty cable or monitor to make them blend together usually ends up making everything else look worse.

Compression is a nice aesthetic.

wut
excuse my ignorance but what are the benefits of running the games at that resolution? I personally think it looks fine in its current state and doubt it can look any better.

>>8456491
yeah I prefer the image looking this sharp desu. I always wanted a PVM but never found one in thrift stores, so this is as close as I can get from playing games at strobing 60hz with true blacks in a relatively low resolution with scanlines.

>> No.8457951

>>8457294
like anon said it has nothing to do with picture quality, it's about aspect ratio correction since most consoles are 240p or very close to it but they can have widely different horizontal resolutions
technically it can also improve quality but you won't notice that, you will notice the wrong aspect ratio though

60Hz on a PC VGA CRT is painful
Same with 120Hz and BFI

Nobody was talking about using a shitty monitor or cable though. Low TVL or composite doesn't mean you have to use a shitty TV or cable.
Nothing to do with authenticity, one objectively looks better, but as long as you're having fun you might as well play on a old LCD, but I don't see the point in paying extra to get a worse picture for this specific content.

you have never seen a real crt if you think royale looks best, that shit looks horrible and has a shit ton of bloom for some reason, reminds me of playing Oblivion.

This. It just seems natural and 'normal' after a while, and also smooth off some of the dithering they used in many mid 90s games (which really suffer from scaling without some kind of filter or shader)
Some shaders (or settings) are too 'attention grabbing'. Nearest Neighbor scaling with it's jaggy edges is also attention grabbing when fullscreen as well, like it's drawing attention to it's 'blocks'.

You know you can just lower the bloom parameters right, these shaders are very customizable
