What's the raddest game you've tried playing on this piece of heaven? For me, it's a toss-up between NiGHTS into Dreams (amazing gameplay -- shouldn't have been anything else instead), Panzer Dragoon Saga (one of the best rated jarpigs of all time) and Sakura Wars (anime based overload).

I know you can apply patches to games if you dump the game copy onto your computer and then apply the patch to it. Either that or you buy an action replay and start burning discs. Shouldn’t be too much of a hassle though be forewarned that not a lot of Japan exclusive games have been translated, though there are plenty you can enjoy without knowing Japanese (Psychic Assassin Taromaru for example, which is probably the rarest game for the system and will set you back a few grand)

Vros I love this fucking console more than you can believe. Everything is perfect about it imo. The blocky graphics, the console design (especially this model with the coloured controller), the library which is absolutely jam packed with hidden gems and underrated greats and that controller is the stuff of legend. Probably the greatest retro controller of all time. Truly a system for kings, such a shame it never got that chance to explode in popularity because of the awkward hardware/poor management decisions. This is THE console if you love arcade ports and experimental shit (that’s not called the Neo Geo but that’s even more based and a whole other kettle of fish)

But its easy to bypass the region lock on Western Saturns, hell its easy to even play disc-based back ups on them thanks to Psuedo Saturn Action Replay carts that get sold on places like eBay. It also came bundled with certain editions of the system, was given away to subscribers of the official Sega Saturn magazine in the U.K., you can send away for it if you validated your purchase of at least two Saturn games and it was also a free rental at Blockbuster. The biggest push was that it was the cover disc for issues of Ultra Game Players and NG magazine which meant even people who didn’t own a Saturn would still get it. > If you want the best Saturn ODE than get a MODE.
That's not MODE. That's Fenrir at this point. MODE is an overpriced device that can't make up it's mind on what it wants to be. In their attempt to make it a multi-system device they made it overpriced with features that just don't make sense and could possibly cause problems for some platforms.

For example being able to use a HDD. That makes sense on Dreamcast that can easily have a HDD added to it and has a PSU that can handle it. On Saturn and PS1 though, it doesn't make sense. The systems don't have the proper connections to make that work correctly which results in MODE needing a lot of additional circuitry. And then the PSU in those systems isn't really made to power a HDD. So putting one in it could cause long term damage to your console.

The thing is also huge and bulky so you pretty much have to remove the CD-ROM drive if you want to install it. And that's not even touching on the odd things homebrew devs have encountered with it.

Fenrir on the other hand can sit beside the Disc drive and there's current work being done to allow it to exist along side the Disc drive. Throw in that it has the ability to have games sent to it over WiFi and it's quickly becoming the ideal ODE and it's half the price of MODE.

Satiator is in a close second in that it's a simple plug and play solution.

>But Compatibility!
The disc swapping issue is a meme. That list of "broken" games being posted around is bullshit. Every multi-disc Saturn game saves before you swap discs, either by asking you to do it or it does it for you behind the scenes. The games on that list are no different. Some prompt you to save, some do it automatically behind the scenes. This was a requirement for Sega to allow a game to pass Quality Assurance and be published. If a multi-disc game didn't save before disc swapping, it didn't get published.

And Satiator's few remaining issues are actively being worked on.

>> No.8447676

>>8447050
>but if you have an ODE than you literally never need to use your CD-ROM drive again.
This is a dumb argument. If there was a flash cart for the NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. that required you to desolder the cartridge port and solder the flash cart in it's place, would you seriously recommend it over one that just went in the cart port with the argument "But if you have it you don't need to use your original carts anymore!"?

No. You wouldn't. You'd recommend the plug and play one that didn't require you to remove the cart port.

When it comes to Saturn ODE's it boils down to this. Don't mind opening up the console and doing a little it of work to install it? Get a Fenrir, you don't even have to remove the drive. Want an easy plug and play solution and don't mind paying a bit more? Get a Satiator. There's literally no reason to recommend a MODE.

Wrong, there are multi disc games that do not allow you to save.

Also, Fenrir is the ODE with the most compatibility and QC issues. Whenever someone online has a problem with an ODE, there is a 99% chance they have a Fenrir. Also, wifi streaming is a meme. You can get a 128GB SD card for next to nothing and that is more than enough space for every worthwhile Saturn game.

The MODE is simply the best ODE available for the Dreamcast. It is the only ODE with 100% compatibility. If you can't afford one than mow some lawns or get a McJob. There is no reason to buy a Fenrir when you could pay a little more and get a significantly better product, and there is definitely no reason to pay more than a MODE for a Satiator.

>Wrong, there are multi disc games that do not allow you to save.
That list being copied pasted around is wrong. Let's break it down:

>Gekka Mugentan Torico (1M) (JP)
>Gekka Mugentan Torico (2M) (JP)
>Lunacy (US)
First up these three are all the same game. And the game has been confirmed to automatically saves for you at the end of Disc 1.

>DeathMask (JP)
The people working on translating this have confirmed it saves when you swap discs.

>Lunar 2 - Eternal Blue (JP)
This one literally asks "Would you like to save your data?" when you reach a disc swapping point.

>Devil Summoner - Soul Hackers (JP)
>3x3 Eyes - Kyuusei Koushu S (JP)
These two state "When you open the disc door you will be taken to the CD Player Screen. Please put in the next disc at this screen." This means it's going back to the BIOS when you open the disc door and will clear out the game in memory. In other words it's behaving the same way as it would if you reset or turned off the system at this screen, meaning it had to have saved something for the game to continue. People who have actually played these games have confirmed this behavior.

>Haunted Casino (JP)
>Desire (JP)
>Doukyuusei 2 (JP)
>Eberouge (JP)
These are the remaining 4 that we simply haven't had confirmation on what they do. But considering the others have all been shown to save when swapping discs how much you want to bet these ones do as well? Even more evidence is this document from Sega:
https://antime.kapsi.fi/sega/files/ST-151-R4-020197.pdf

This documents standards games needed to meet in order to pass quality assurance. You'll see in the appendix for multi-disc games that saving between discs was required, as well as returning to the Bios when opening the disc drive.

Going further, you can check the Satiator's GitHub for this issue and see the current status of it:
https://github.com/satiator/compatibility/issues/12
>For the games called out by this issue, the game prompts you to swap the disc, but you of course cannot do this without exiting back to the system menu, re-entering the Satiator menu, and then loading the image for the next disc. Thanks to investigation by the community, it was confirmed that these games save your current progress to backup RAM - in some cases, without user intervention or prompting - so you can just go through the process described previously to load the next disc, then load up your save and continue as expected.

In other words, you don't need a "Disc Swap" feature. Just go back to the menu and load the next disc.

>Also, Fenrir is the ODE with the most compatibility and QC issues.
No it's not. The only compatibility issue it has is "In The Hunt" for US versions only. And I don't know what QC issues you're talking about.

>Whenever someone online has a problem with an ODE, there is a 99% chance they have a Fenrir.
Again this goes against everything I've seen. I see far more people reporting issues with games and translation patches acting up on MODE than I do with the Fenrir. Mainly because MODE takes a lot of stupid shortcuts under the hood.

>Also, wifi streaming is a meme.
Streaming maybe, but being able to just load games onto the ODE through WIFI is definitely nice. You can just put the thing in there and never have to open up your Saturn again. You can't really do that with your MODE if it's using a HDD.

>The MODE is simply the best ODE available for the Dreamcast.
For Dreamcast sure, not Saturn or PS1 though.

>It is the only ODE with 100% compatibility.
Have you actually tested every game? Homebrew devs have definitely found things MODE does that a real Saturn doesn't, which can potentially cause compatibility issues.

>>8451395

Actually digging a bit more, the issue with "In The Hunt" is an issue with the original disc. The work around is to unplug the controller until you get to the title screen. The Japanese version doesn't have the issue. I'd be willing to bet this same issue happens with MODE, but no one actually really tested it to confirm it.

> Ignoring all of the issues people are having with fenrir
Name them.

> The Homebrew devs were sloppy!
Wrong. The homebrew devs weren't being sloppy. It was the MODE Devs. MODE has been shown to cut corners and do things in sloppy ways that cause pretty major problems. Every "sloppy homebrew dev" issue that's been raised with MODE, works when run from an actual CD. Which if a homebrew game or a translation patch works fine on a burned CD, but crashes or has issues on MODE, it means that MODE is doing something wrong.

> Still leaning on meme features that no one will ever use (wifi streaming to an ODE when you could just put the images on an SD card is stupid)
Sure but if you want to keep the disc drive that would require opening up the Saturn to get to the SD card, or in the case of MODE opening up the Saturn to get to the USB port or the SSD. The WIFI feature makes it so you never have to open the system up again after installing it. And you can keep the Disc Drive intact.

> Not knowing about the issue with In The Hunt that everyone else has known about for 20+ years
Then why are you crying about compatibility when that's the only game listed on the compatibility list for Fenrir with an issue?

>Retard. Wait until you find out about Croc, lol.
There's actually variants of Croc that will work fine without having to boot to the Bios. And there's even some Saturn's where even the version with the issue will work fine. It's related to an issue with Saturn's that have the SCSP and the M68K combined into one chip. I believe early copies of Space Harrier and Outrun have similar issues with those Saturns.

>What kind of a raging autist gets this butthurt over a conversation on 4chan?
The only people raging here are the ones that can't accept that MODE is an overpriced produce that is all style over substance.

Look at reddit, on discord, or on forums, 99.9% of the time someone is having a problem its with Fenrir. It's not a stable product.

Also, you are wrong, the homebrew devs were sloppy. You see this time and time again when they release patches and translations that are broken. Its not a horrible thing, a single person can't test things extensively, but remember that this is a "community" of amateurs that do things like advertising a patch as a "Release Candidate" that has a 100% reproduceable gamebreaking bug that is unavoidable in normal gameplay. Homebrew devs are not professional developers, they screw up and make mistakes, it happens, get over it.

> The wifi feature
Again, a meme. Why overcomplicate something solely for the purpose of overcomplicating something? Wifi streaming of games to a console is retarded, you're dealing with adding unnecessary hardware and added latency for literally no reason. A 128GB MicroSD card is $15. Do you really not have $15? As for the disc drive, there is literally no reason to ever use it if you have an ODE. It's a "feature" that defeats its own purpose, anyone with two brain cells can see this.

Stop cheerleading an inferior product because you're too poor to afford anything better and have massive buyer's remorse as a result.

Honestly deunan brought it on himself by refusing to work with manufacturers and insisting that every single ODE be hand built by him. This meant QC was high, but it also meant that availability was extremely low and delays were common (to the point where he would regularly have to delay building ODEs because bad weather meant he couldn't dry them outside). Having to camp his wordpress blog just for the chance to potentially be able to buy one was stupid. He should have partnered with someone and gotten paid, but instead he makes nothing off of the clones. You can tell how burnt out he was becoming with manufacturing everything by hand with how cunty he started being with customers and in his blog.

mode is the best ode available, its the most stable and is the only one on the market with 100% compatibility with the entire Saturn library. It's also the second most expensive, though.

If you're a poorfag or a casual than a fenrir is perfectly adequate, you pay half the cost of a mode or a satiator and it works ok enough, although it tends to give people more problems with sd card compatibility

A satiator is overpriced and doesn't really make sense because its whole schtick is that you don't need to replace your CD-ROM drive, to use it, but anyone who isn't a retard can install an ODE, and there is no reason to play games from the disc when you have an ODE, so it defeats its own purpose.

If you want the best ode available, get a mode. If you want the cheapest ode available that will be fine for 90% of gamers than get a fenrir. If you're a complete retard get a satiator, If you just want to get your feet wet with the system than spend $30-$40 on a pseudosaturn cart and $10 on a stack of CDRs and you'll be able to play more games than you'll ever have time for.

That's not the purpose of an ODE. The purpose is to play any game regardless of whether you own it, as most people here are asking about storage solutions for the full library. I highly doubt you own more than one or two saturn games if you own any at all, by your argument you should own all the games you play on an ODE.

You're acting like my cases should just be trophies and shouldn't be functional at all, like I should just get rid of them or use them for reddit tier photoshoots. I don't use an ODE btw, I use pseudo. If I wanted to splurge, I would get the satiator though.

Then why do Homebrew and Patch developers keep getting reports of MODE doing crazy un-reproducable shit that doesn't happen on stock consoles using CDs? Why are there constant firmware updates fixing bugs and issues if it's had 100% compatibility this entire time?

The truth of the matter is MODE has compatibility issues too, but since it's TerraOnion there is no public compatibility tracker where the community reports issues too. There's no list of "Here's the games we tested and our results." because they haven't actually tested every single game. You are just a dumbass you thinks because a company says "100% compatibility!" on the box, it must be true.

MODE is overpriced style over substance. Most of it's "Features" are related to it being able to work in multiple consoles, but that's completely stupid because you're never going to swap it between said consoles because it's not a plug and play like device. You have to install it into all three systems. This is what makes it expensive and clunky and is where a lot of it's problems stem from.

It's neat seeing how the Saturn 3D pad evolved into the Dreamcast controller. A single "stick" and 3x2 buttons really show how hard Sega was leaning into arcade gameplay at the time. I'm still not sure why they went with 2x2 for the face buttons on the DC, maybe to make it easier to unify control schemes between PS1 ports?

I like Jam, but the slowdown in Sonic 2 is genuinely atrocious, especially since it's unrelated to what's happening on the screen, and it's very noticeable.
It's really baffling how the game will run fine with rings everywhere and water on screen (which chugs on the Genesis but not really in Jam) but it'll then slow down with like two platforms on the screen and nothing else.
S1 and S3 aren't nearly as bad about it, but you can still occasionally feel them slow down a tad here and there.
Also, the altered sound effects are a mixed bag.
Some are way better than on Genesis (when you hit a boss is a good example), some are way worse (the ring sound in particular).

The other extras are neat (I wish the Sonic World camera wasn't fucking shit), but as a way to play S1/2/3&K, it's not the best.

Rhea and Pheobe might as well not exist considering the insane hoops you have to jump through to actually be able to buy one.

I have a Fenrir and a friend of mine has a MODE and neither of us have had any issues with fan translations or homebrew games (SotN, Vandal Hearts, Grandia, Policenauts, Hellslave, etc). There were some issues early on with ODEs and buggy homebrew projects, but for some reason Reddit seems to think that non-commercial games don't work on MODE when they clearly do. It's just people being dumb. Fan translators are a great part of the community, but the important thing to remember is that they are amateurs working with 25 year old hardware that wasn't even effectively documented for actual developers back when it was commercially viable. They do great work sometimes, but they are far too quick to blame hardware when bugs happen. There is a really big ego issue in the community so the thought that they may have made a mistake never seems to occur to them.

I don't know about compatibility with photo cds and modern ODEs because I've never felt the need to use photo CDs.

It's this, not the disc version. I have a black American model 2 saturn, and the glitch happens unless I start the game from the main menu.

Here's the cool thing I didn't realize though, the American disc is region free. It will play on a Japanese console.

I took the Pseudo Saturn out of my Japanese model 2, booted the console up with the disc inside, and it worked perfect. However, if you use the pseudo saturn/action reply, it won't work. You might assume you'd need it to bypass region coding but it's a region free disc, which is pretty neat. I believe American NiGHTS is also region free, or at least the "not for resale" version is.

>I believe American NiGHTS is also region free, or at least the "not for resale" version is.

the USA release of Nights has both USA and JAP region codes in it and also the asia ntsc one (used for samsung saturn). So it works on korean, japanese and usa consoles.
The JAP version of Nights has the region codes for japanese and korean saturns.

There's quite a bunch of multi-region discs like that. Region coding on the Saturn actually was optional, not unlike on the xbox 360. You master a disc to support any regions.
