I really enjoy adventure games but have played almost none. Please recommend some good classics I should play.

>> No.843667

Have you played Neverhood?

>> No.843672

>>843667
Yes! I haven't finished it though, finally got bored and gave up at the part where you have to walk like 50 screens to the right. Worth finishing?

>> No.843675

>>843672
Yeah. And it's 40 screens. Heheh.

>> No.843720

Here are some personal favorites

Broken Sword 1&2
Gabriel Knight 1
Sanitarium
The Longest Journey
I have no Mouth and I must Scream

Playing through this now. It's fucking fantastic. Super strange but it shouldn't be missed if you're an enthusiast.

>I have no Mouth and I must Scream

Got this fucking thing running following a guide but no voices. (Not OP)

Need to get sanitarium off GoG. I wish IHNMAIMS was on GoG and fixed for modern systems.

Did you use ScummVM?

>> No.843754

>>843750
Dos box, guide was built around Dos box.

>> No.843760

>>843754
I never got it to work through Dosbox, if you play it through ScummVM it works fine though.

>> No.843768

These are good, but they're not exactly good entry points. Monkey Island is a good intro to the genre, and even if you've played a few adventure games already, it's good to play Monkey Island just because it's so heavily associated with "classic" adventure games. I'd recommend the Sierra classics like King's Quest with more hesitation, because they're more prone to unfair lethality, unwinnable situations, and really bizarre adventure game logic puzzles.

>> No.843787

>>843750
Beneath a steel sky has pretty good voice acting, art and humour. Its short though and there are very few hard puzzles.

>> No.843795

>>843787
It's free if you make a GoG account

Space Quest Series

>> No.843816

>>843595

Try the Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes. (There are two of them, case of the serrated scalpel and the case of the rose tattoo) They're not only good mystery/adventure games, there's actually a lot of history buried in the games, especially the second one.

>> No.843831

>>843816

Oh god, I loved those games, but I fucking hated the darts mini-game.

Beneath a Steel Sky is also free without a GOG account. You can download it from the scummvm website or even apt-get install it IIRC.

>> No.843990

Play:
Secret of Monkey Island 1 & 2
Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle
Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2
I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream
Loom
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Avoid (unless you decide you're a die-hard fan of the genre):
Most Sierra games
the Kyrandia games

sierra adventure games are the best

lucasarts are for casuals

The Longest Journey

Oh man. I LOVE this game. Within the first hour I already decided the writing was better than 95% of vidya games. Why can't games be as well written as this?

>> No.844070

Quest for Glory is my all time favorite if only because you can pick your own nose with a lockpick and die from cerebral hemorrhage.

Graham's accidentally plummeting into nothingness due to shitty boundary programming says otherwise.

Still great games, though.

How do you rate adventure games? Are casual ones actually initiative?

>> No.844161

>>844136
I prefer ones with good graphics and lots of action in it.

>> No.844165

I am sort of new to adventure games but just started playing I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. It is a great game.

>> No.844171

Use ScumVm. It is easy as shit to install. Even I managed to do it and I know nothing about anything.

>> No.844180

>>844171
Also, for "good adventure games" you can easily just point out to all the games ScummVM can play.
Some are not that great, I'll admit that. But they're all perfectly playable and worth a little bit of fun.

>Broken Sword 1&2
Good choice but don't get the Director's Cut. (they shit up the pacing and art)
Get the originals.

>> No.847181

Best modern company is without a question Daedalic Entertainment. (pretty much everything except possibly the Harvey games is great)

Deponia 1&2 are both worth playing. (2 is better and the protagonist gets more likeable in it)

King's Quest IV

I highly recommend cheching Legend Entertainment games such as Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, Mission Critical, Gateway 1 and 2, Eric the Unready and Death Gate.

>Legend Entertainment games such as Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
I'll second that.
Awesome game. (except for the maze area near the end with the talking dog)
