These are good, but they're not exactly good entry points. Monkey Island is a good intro to the genre, and even if you've played a few adventure games already, it's good to play Monkey Island just because it's so heavily associated with "classic" adventure games. I'd recommend the Sierra classics like King's Quest with more hesitation, because they're more prone to unfair lethality, unwinnable situations, and really bizarre adventure game logic puzzles.

Beneath a steel sky has pretty good voice acting, art and humour. Its short though and there are very few hard puzzles.

Try the Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes. (There are two of them, case of the serrated scalpel and the case of the rose tattoo) They're not only good mystery/adventure games, there's actually a lot of history buried in the games, especially the second one.

Oh man. I LOVE this game. Within the first hour I already decided the writing was better than 95% of vidya games. Why can't games be as well written as this?

Quest for Glory is my all time favorite if only because you can pick your own nose with a lockpick and die from cerebral hemorrhage.

Also, for "good adventure games" you can easily just point out to all the games ScummVM can play.
Some are not that great, I'll admit that. But they're all perfectly playable and worth a little bit of fun.

Rent A Hero

Good choice but don't get the Director's Cut. (they shit up the pacing and art)
Get the originals.

Best modern company is without a question Daedalic Entertainment. (pretty much everything except possibly the Harvey games is great)

Deponia 1&2 are both worth playing. (2 is better and the protagonist gets more likeable in it)
