It's superior to the original games, but they did lose their visual identity. Your opinion on these games is probably going to depend on how much that matters to you.

I don't necessarily hate the meme itself, sometimes it can be pretty spot on.
But yeah it's time to stop trying to force it into things that aren't soulless, like based All Stars

I like it and back in the day this was a hell of a deal. Four games in one including one never released here. With slight graphical upgrades in each game.

I think the arguments now of it some how being "shitty" or "soulless" in someway comes from modern ideas and access to shit so easily. Games were expensive back in the day. And still are but dropping 60 dollars at electronics boutique or kb toys for a game in 1991 was a lot of money. Also the only criticisms I've ever seen of it are really really minor that nobody would ever notice unless pointed out.

Like how In the first mario game on all stars. Mario hits blocks slightly different than he does in the nes game. I never noticed that until some youtube complainer pointed it while discussing a rom hack that "fixed the issue" 99% of people never noticed .

I like the US release that also included Super Mario World a lot. I actually prefer the versions of SMB3 and SMW in that version to any other. I like the way 1 and Lost Levels look but the music is kinda eh. I hold the NES and SNES versions of those games on equal footing. Never really cared for 2.

I remember it cost extra compared to other first party games at the time because it was a "4-in-1". SNES games were normally about $100 in Australia at the time and SMAS was something like $115.

Nintendo giving away Mario Allstars promotion was pressure from Sega. The All Stars promotion happened between September to December of 1993. But earlier in the same year Sega did the Sonic 2 mail-in promotional giveaway. For the price of postage, they would send genesis owners a free copy of Sonic 2:

Well, the gameplay is kept pretty much entirely in-tact, and the ability to save is definitely nice, so they're certainly good remakes in their own rights. I do think that the changes to the games' physics are slightly detrimental, but they're so minor that they don't harm the experience in any meaningful way.

The art style is the real issue, and I don't think that the addition of a save feature is quite enough to make up for it (especially given that the warp zones/whistles in the NES versions do a lot to make up for its absence). One thing that I really appreciate about the NES Mario games is that, despite being extremely early in their genre, they still have very unique art direction and don't just look like "generic platformers" as you might expect. The All-Stars versions come way closer to that, and the difference is especially pronounced in SMB3. So I'll always go back to the originals, although I will say that, when it was first released, the version that included Super Mario World was probably the best deal in the business. Having all those awesome games on a single cartridge was probably unbelievable.

Yes, especially in the 80s, 90s and 00s. There was the exchange rate difference, plus an extra margin of markup. These days the prices are fairly similar to other counties after accounting for exchange rate.

Bullshit, open up the allstars rom on yy-chr and locate mario 3 graphics, the king-transformation sprites are located in same part where the rest of mario 3 graphics are. Plus the game doesn't even compress its graphics, so nintendo didn't give two shits about saving space. It has a very minor inaccuracy in SMB1/LL, where hitting a brick with your head doesn't change your vertical speed in the correct way (bounce). You can fix this with a patch that's widely available. There aren't any other issues other than some people not liking the graphics, so otherwise it's a great rendition of everything else.

>> No.8436068

>>8435550
Not part of this discussion but compression on SNES is actually special chip behavior, so not wanting to use that would be a fine reason not to compress data (I am with you in that I doubt the cart being full was a reason for anything in All Stars though).
