Xbox for multiplats, Xbox exclusives, and emulating lots of 4th gen and back systems on a console that works well on old TVs.
PS2 for the giant exclusive PS2 library, massive catalog, and especially if you intend to play a lot of PS1 games.

The PS2 has extremely bad image quality. The worst of any console post nes. It was terribly designed. The massive library only gets brought up in arguments, most people just play the hits which are ports. The PS2 should be avoided at all costs. If a game is on Xbox play it on Xbox. If it's on DC play it on DC. If it's only on gc get it on gc. If it's only on PS2 play it on a 60gb PS3, or hook it up to a quality scaler, it still won't look good through.

I like things like JRPGs a lot but the PS2 image quality is awful and barely any games support Progressive scan mode meaning that I would need to get an OSSC or CRT.

both are good, multiplats on both are good, with only a handful of exceptions (splinter cell being the only significant one?) the benefits of multiplats on xbox are minimal and not enough to win against the massive PS2 library. Xbox is a smaller console and better for playing those kinds of games except when the worse controller design becomes an issue (this happens unfortunately in some big games like vice city and san andreas.) but the PS2 versions are fine, so it should really come down to exclusives which the PS2 does win in. Don't sleep on the Xbox though, it's worth owning.

360 only plays a few OG titles and not even all the good ones. If you have a JTAG console you can load more games with mixed compatibility results. Emulating XB on PC is probably going to be a better option at least by next year judging how fast XEMU development has been.

As far as the choice goes, it really depends on what you're looking for.

Xbox had better versions of multiplat games, and their exclusives were more western marketed (Halo alone is worth buying the console).
PS2 is really only worth it if you're a weeb and *need* fighters or JRPGS.

ICO/Katamari/Gran Turismo 4/Sly make it worth checking out but you might as well just get a ps3 (NOT RETRO!!!) and get the libraries of PSX/PS2/PS3 in one package.

Most worth games from the xbox are also on PC and looks terrible in comparison to the pc versions.
If you care about RPGs, PS2 is the paradise for it.
If your main concern is about graphics, you don't wanna play old games at all.
