Can Ion Fury Aftershock get released soon pretty please? I mean sure, take all the time needed to ensure it's good but I sure feel like I'm getting really ready for it. Currently playing through IF on Maximum Fury to get ready for AfterShock. Enjoying hunting for secrets even if I know that I probably won't find a lot of them.

Also been casually playing through DOOM 2, almost done with Blood. Though I still have Cryptic passage to go through.

Looking forward what the throwback shooter genre can muster. Also looking forward to SiN Remaster, never played that game so hopefully the remaster won't suck.

Almost done with Descent 1.
What a game. Top tier music (OPL3), top tier gameplay. Probably the hardest commercially released FPS I've ever played, also one of the most unique ones. I didn't know there were secret levels until I found the first one.
Also didn't know what ship autoleveling did, but once I found out I turned it off and instantly became better at the game.
I'm also playing through Descent 2 at the same time, which is a lot easier, a lot more advanced, but I feel it isn't as memorable. Also, why only 4 midi tracks for 27+ levels. Wtf were they thinking.

>> No.8420719

Does anyone see MetaDoom as a justification/excuse for new Doom games still being made?
Sounds stupid as fuck, but the mod gives this insight of how actually deep the "real" Doom universe is, by exploring a series and adding things that technically exist.
It's like if Mario's universe is defined as big, not because of characters or stories, but because of mechanics, movesets, enemies, level things etc, which in turn makes a series for fun for crossovers and fan games, mods or rom hacks.
This notion that a game isn't a "toy" but a collection of toys and each entry is a different sandbox with something to offer.
Doom was already "expanded" by mods but those are usually "non canon", so these "legacy/backport" mods are different for the source material alone.
And that project Reincarnation of Evil even tries to make stuff fit the classic aesthetic.
Basically, making a new game under the Doom brand can have reasons to me made (as long as it's good, interesting and has a proper legacy), even if it will eventually look for a different game format (besides the "Doom dance", though it's unlikely because of how successful Eternal is and if id tries to make it more flexible) or take even more elements from other games like Quake or Heretic.
But if id ever tried to literally copy modders, just "hire that man" and give them some respect and payment for suggesting things that could/would/should have been "canon" and don't ever go after fan mods or something.
Even then, fuck Mighty Doom, at least turn that into a hidden minigame inside a major game like turkey puncher.

Use WhackEd4.
Go to "states" panel
Select "thing" you want to change the states of from the "filter" drop down.
Select the state that you want to change the timing of.
Change "duration" of state.

Everything is in 35 fps, so a state duration of 35 lasts one second.

If you need to know anything else lemme know. There aren't really any great guides out there that I've found, or at least any better than what is on the original DEH website.

So I'm playing Hexen II for the first time right now. Really enjoying it, criminally under talked about. BUT I picked too easy a difficulty setting. Hexen art-direction is the best over all classic FPSes. You can just walk around the hub, listen to catchy music, enjoy the gloomy surroundings and punch infrequently spawned Ettin (similar to Metroid Prime in that regard). To get how really great is Hexen - try playing Witchaven before it (it has superior graphics despite being released slightly earlier). Each area in Hexen has its own unique atmosphere and archeticture. Puzzles are logical and functional map makes the navigation easy and relaxing. Just don't expect much fighting, actual gameplay on each hub start after you cleared the mobs. Besides vanilla - Wrath of Cronos is a very nice mod.

I think Doom II kinda sucks honestly. I don't feel it hits the highs of the first game. The level design is worse. I don't like the new monsters. I'm not even that fond of the SSG. I like the original SG. I swear I'm not a zoomer. I got my copy as a gift the year it launched. The box was really cool though. To this day I haven't completed the game. Though I'm going to make it a goal to do that this coming year to see if I change my mind.

Doom 2 is weird because I love the SSG and the combat setpieces, but the actual level layouts are jank as hell; they all bleed together into this surreal clusterfuck where it's not clear where Earth ends and Hell begins. I watched his review for the first game. It kind of feels like somebody that really was dead set on not enjoying a game at all from the get go. I can't see how anybody can pick up Quake 1 and not be immediately pulled in to the simple, but satisfying gameplay. The muddy graphics really work for the game as well. I did feel like the weapons lacked the "oomph" factor that Doom's weapons had. It's still really satisfying to use the grenade launcher and the nail guns though. That said, it's probably my second fave fps at this point. Only because Doom exists.

I think doom 2's new monsters and SSG are invaluable assets, but Id didn't really know how to use them properly so the game as a whole is kind of a mess. Plutonia, on the other hand, displays a good understanding of the new monsters and is the best of the classic dooms imo.

Personally, I'm quite fond of Map18: The Courtyard. It's about as pleasant looking as the vanilla assets would permit an outdoor level to be, and all the monsters pouring into the central area for a big firefight is a lot of fun. A bit of a shame how little of the map you actually have to visit to beat it, but the non-linear environment makes hunting secrets more fun.

The Living End is a great "final stage". (I know the Icon is its own map but this is the last traditional level)
You go down the elevator and you can just tell that stone structure across the chasm is where the endgame is; then you circle inward to the exit. It's a pretty linear level, but the ramp-up before the final boss is great. Shame the actual fight is just a lift puzzle.

Because a lot like Doom, it's actually sci-fi-horror flavored action, only with Duke himself serving as a comic relief, juxtaposed with the grim and dark tone of some levels, creating a good contrast, along with some audacious humor here and there.

As Duke remains a true badass, and he doesn't just quip away the horrors he sees as some sort of narcissistic sociopath (like in Duke Nukem Forever), the tone doesn't get awkward, and this ridiculous superhero remains sympathetic. He is able, he is caring, so even if he's bizarre, you feel confident in his ability to stop the Alien Bastards, and you know he's personally invested in his mission.

While still a cool mod, it's putting all the characters into Doom which doesn't fit with what I proposed. What I'm talking about is comparing all the characters to each other as they are in their respective games. One small issue would be comparing games that have random damage values like Doom. Ah, ok, I'll run you through it:
>1. All of Doom's content (levels, graphics, music, sound) is stored in an archive format called .wad ("Where's All the Data?")
>2. For example, doom.wad contains all the stuff for the first game, doom2.wad contains all the stuff for the second game, and then TNT.wad and plutonia.wad contain all the stuff for the Final Doom expansions
>3. doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad, and plutonia.wad are considered "internal .wad" files, meaning that you load them up as a base with a port like GzDoom or Crispy Doom
>4. doom2.wad is used by most mapsets, but Plutonia 2 is built on the original Plutonia, and uses the plutonia.wad file as its basis
>5. Therefore you load PL2.wad with with plutonia.wad to play Plutonia 2

Put these in the GzDoom directory. Then make a folder (name it "pwads" or something next to, or inside the GzDoom directory, where you put any mapsets you want to play.

Something which can be a convenient accessory to use is a program like DoomLauncher:
https://www.realm667.com/index.php/en/downloads/tools/1121-doomlauncher-3-2-0-0/file

You point this program to the GzDoom program and the four "iwads", and then you add the PL2.wad to the program. Now you can just select PL2.wad (Plutonia 2), then a prompt lets you pick GzDoom as your Port, and Plutonia as your Iwad. The program will remember your settings for Plutonia 2.

The Mansion in RR E2 was the most beautiful Build level I ever played. How did they get lamp holder shadows on the wall, is this all textures? It also plays quite well and is less labirinthy (also less decorated) than Blood mansion map. Unlike Blood, rooms colours are realistic here and help navigation. Only the garden maze in the end was unnecessary. Booby alien in the bedroom was fun too, and climbing through the chimney - I remember such thing (in more bullshit - less obvious way) in Shadow Warrior.

That said, I was using the most recent version of GZDoom before I wiped Windows from my system and had the same problem with getting 3D objects to display in Castlevania: Simon's Destiny and Hocus Pocus Doom mods. Hardware wise, I have an Intel i5 2.67GHz, 8GB ram, Radeon HD 4650. It could be a hardware specific problem. I've spent a lot of time going through every option in GZDoom I can find, and while I can get the performance working okay, I have yet to figure out if there's a way to get the 3D objects to display. I'm not going to complain because my father in-law gave me this computer free and I was previously using a Raspberry Pi. lol

After finishing Heartland I want to hear the opinion of /doom/ of it to see if I am being nitpicky or not regarding the things I didn't like. Also, Eternity Engine sucks dick, somehow I was getting more FPS drops with it at some parts than in Lullaby using 1080p GZDoom.

Playing Q2 base campaign, and it is actually better, than I remembered. Brown everywhere is annoying, but levels are easy to navigate, there is a lot of ammo for classic doom-like gameplay and mobs are less spongy than in Q1, also double barreled shotgun in Q2 is my favourite between all fpses. Though, as I remember, levels go downhill later on.

Why doesn't Freedoom get more support? Why hasn't it replaced Doom II entirely? I feel like I'm going crazy trying to understand this situation. You have the engine and now the wads to endlessly modify the game into anything you want. The average person can't afford a home. A landlord is a person that owns property and then rents it to other people. If you live in one of these places, you don't ever want to spend money improving the place because you can be arbitrarily kicked out and you will not get compensated for the time, money, or energy you put in. In the same way, many people have invested a lot of time and energy into making source ports, megawads, mods, and custom content for a product they do not actually have any legal right to. This means, that on any given month the whole community could implode because some lawyers got a little bored. For an example, see..

In Zandronum/Doomseeker, when you create a game config (which is saved as an .ini file), is it possible to make the password read an environment variable from your local machine? I've tried the following (and I've also tried with $... instead of %...%), but Doomseeker just seems to read those directly as being the password.

The reason I want to do this is because I want an easy way to change the host password across all configs, plus I'm sharing my configs so I don't want my passwords visible.

look at all the work that has gone into things like source ports, wad packs, mod packs.

compare that with the amount of effort that has gone into, say, custom sprites. most wads/mods that have custom enemies use at best recolors ripped from other games, and even these usually look shitty and a bit out of place (i personally still find all the ancient aliens custom sprites to look like absolute dogshit).

I need some quick help with Thief 2.
In the mission Life of the Party, Karras leaves voice messages for the guests, and for Garrett.
One thing though, is that I never actually figured out what these messages said? I've been looking for a bit and can't find any forum posts or anything like that online deciphering them.
Does anybody here know what they say, or where I can find out what they say?

I know about stuff like OBLIGE, but are there any wads that use randomization through scripting, in a more careful hand crafted way? For example left 4 dead style, slightly randomized enemy placement and locking some doors so you have to take different routes on replays

Dynamic routing like you described would likely need to be baked into the map itself, though I can't think of any examples off the top of my head. You could probably do it to a certain extent in vanilla or boom using monster pathing as your source of randomization, but a Zdoom ACS solution would be far more elegant and powerful.

I hate to admit it, but the "pirates" are in the right. How many times do you have to buy the same damn game before you give up and join them? For example, I have two licensed copies of the Quake 1 remaster on two different platforms. The one on PC also includes the original. NONE of these run on my PC. NONE. So, I own three fucking copies of the game and I still have to take the files I paid for and use them in a source port. Now, depending who you ask or where you live that's completely legal to do. So, if a person is going to be considered a criminal for paying and using what they paid for I can see why some people just refuse to pay. I don't even want to know how many times I bought Doom since the 90s I would probably have a mental breakdown.

Yeah that's mostly what I was imagining, cases where the map author specifically put the randomization in.
I think the main thing that got me thinking about it was end.wad by clippy, where map02 is the same as map01 except you start at a different place with none of the keys you would have when you got there earlier, so the paths you have to take are different

I made a shitty proof of concept in zscript but it seems like it could be tricky to tune, so it doesn't feel like you get RNG screwed out of path C after getting a bunch of path A and B in a row or whatever

You can, however, be found in violation of the EULA, since most EULAs restrict the number of copies you can have (Q3's, for example, lets you have a copy of the files on your HDD, a copy in your RAM, and a backup/archive copy on physical media, and no more). The enforceability of a EULA depends on the manner in which it was presented to you, the terms therein, and where you're trying to have them enforced, but people have been successfully charged with breach of EULA before.

Even along retro shooters, Sam is probably the least appropriate franchise to try to make sense of. Anyway, you might wanna check out Bogus Detour. It features literal Egyptian (and other cultures) human NPCs. Game itself is the best indie SS title IMO.
>And why are there miniguns in ancient Egypt?
Recently I completed Black Mesa, in which scientists have been constantly teleporting supplies to you during Xen chapter. I thought similar idea could be applied to Serious Sam i.e. your allies constantly throwing miniguns back in time. But then I remembered Earth getting mooned in BFE...so yeah, this doesn't work.

I also had the same idea after reading some little fan story a while back detailing Sam's mission before he jumped through time. BFE's existence does make that theory impossible but at the same time SS4 is also introducing more time shenanigans so maybe the timeline will change at some point. Alternate dimensions ahoy!

I like the new EVENT script types. It's possible to make things run a script everytime they take damages, identifying things like damage source, type and amount (which can even be modified in the script directly).
The downside is thta gzdoom doesn't have that so you'd basically have to make a separate version for it that uses zscript or something to do that if you want gzdoom people to play it (which is what most people use to play mods).

Because I see gameplay mods as something that gives you a fun change of pace from vanilla gameplay when in the mood, and not as a replacement entirely. Most mappers don't design their mapsets with gameplay mods in mind, which means the intended experience will get derailed, which is perfectly fine if its a repeat playthrough and you just want some fun, but for a first playthrough, the addition of a gameplay mod can greatly affect your first impressions of the mapset for better or worse.
I get that Final Doomer has various classes themed around mapsets, but considering its made by different people, and that theres some weapons that function radically different from stock, I don't see it as appropriate for a first playthrough.
Obviously, people are free to do whatever they want. They don't have to listen to me. This is just my personal thoughts.
