Sure, a bit- a lot of titles left things to be desired- Super monkey ball is probably the weakest on the list above, with the Sims titles being the strongest. They are not at all like the console or PC counterparts- They are adventure RPGs, hard to explain in detail- I am using their basic structure to develop my current game. The design is elegant, and the presentation is simple but nails what it tries to do

Yeah of course, but I don't think that they hold up as 'real' games, like the Metroid games for example

All SNES ports. Some are even better than the SNES version just because they got tweaks after the devs learned from the problems after the games SNES launch.

This.

i mean theres an immense amount of shovelware as it was easy to make games for late in its life
theres still a LOT of cool games for it depending on what genre youre looking for

imo the weakest aspect of the console was its sound
exceptions aside, sound design on the GBA tends to be somewhere in between shitty/tinny/compressed sounding, and literally abrasive

Ah I see what you mean; I might agree with you even; Look to the list above for a more comprehensive list into games which would be considered "richer", my list was kind of oddities that I enjoyed and got a lot of mileage out of. I guess I didn't really read OP's question carefully. I do stand by the Sims titles though, I still give them playthroughs and really enjoy the gameplay

Dangerously based.
If you like them, play Sims 2 as a dessert. Just expect a weaker game. Also Urbz on DS is the same game but with extra story chapter.

>basically mobile game tier by today's standards
they WERE mobile games THEN too

its important to place it in its time to accurately judge it
like the GB it was very affordable, games could be bought used for basically nothing or new for like $20-$30 iirc, it had great battery life, it was pretty durable, comfy to hold, and unlike most modern phones/handhelds it was ACTUALLY PORTABLE

all that right there is pretty good by itself, but then you add in the shock value of us suddenly going from playing watered down NES-tier games the year prior, to literally playing SNES ports that looked and ran great, and taking it where the fuck ever we wanted. none of us thought that was possible, until it was

GB and GBC popularized handheld gaming, but it was commonly seen as sort of a step-back (out of necessity due to hardware) from console games
GBA games made that line a lot more blurry

>> No.8411062

>>8411060

BACKWARDS COMPATABILITY

im not sure id have even bothered to get a GBA until years later were it not for the fact that it was just an upgraded GBC that had new games coming out for it

This right here. Playing Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country on a handheld was an experience I can not describe.

I grew up with those 16bit console games and the Gameboy by comparison was just so inferior. But then this thing comes out and all those memories are the palm of your hand.

People call it a port machine but that was what was just so great about it. Now we have a hundred ways to play SNES on the go, then we had one, this and it was glorious.

Even when it wasn't a port, new games made it feel like the 2D era never ended. Sonic Advance, Castlevania, Megaman Zero, Crash, Spyro, Pokemon, Metal Slug, Metroid, Zelda, Kirby... it was all there.

Now days with so many options to play on the go it becomes hard to see what a beast this thing was. The GBA was incredible.

>> No.8412693

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga was a fucking great game and so is Warioware. The GBA has a lot of really neat games-- probably nothing that's going to make you worship it the way it was worshipped 20 years ago, but most of the games look great, play great, and will definitely provide you with satisfying experiences.

Just browse some random top 10 lists and pick and choose what you think looks the most interesting. By now those lists are basically refined enough to be solid guides to choosing the highest quality games.
