Last call for claims. I'm going to declare this project dead by the end of this thread if nothing changes. Only got 7 actual maps despite all these claims, so unless that changes before this thread dies the project is over. I hope everyone who actually made a map can use them for some other project so all this good work doesn't go to waste. Maybe I'll try this project again later.

The other impulse commands cause the things to light up when active, and give a console message.
Impulse 35 doesn't do either, but manually hitting the axe start tile in the start map does work.
It's *just* the impulse command.

Fresh download of Violent Rumble from Moddb.
Impulse 35 is still broken for me.

Also some more bizarreness from 0.94.3 is that if you have QS 0.93.2 folders in your Quake directory, FOV changing works (without altering the drawviewmodel), but if those folders aren't in your Quake directory and you only have the 0.94.3 folders there FOV changing is broken.

Why?
Having 0.93.2 and 0.94.3 folders both in directory allows FOV changing in 0.94.3 , which doesn't work with only 0.94.3 folders.

I was thinking here, now that Quake II 25th Anniversary is next year, and Thursday is the 24th.
>Its obvious that a Remaster is coming, RTX proved out to be a bad idea
>Quake Remastered port is a huge success, console is having fun, and PC brought new blood, and mainly with new stuff getting added, outside the original release.
>Quake 64 port turned out to be good as Doom64
>Obvious that Abyss is going to be the next on Quake 1 "official mission packs" added to the remaster, very soon-ish.
>Normies wishes for more Quake remasters
>Q2 sweeps in with fixed AI, new monster models using the unused ai animations like super tank reverse firing and grenades, Nightmare difficulty, and Mission packs.
>Zaero and Oblivion becomes Official DLC's
>PS1 and N64 gets in as Bonuses for finishing the game.
>Lazarus and 3.24 support Day 1 with 3.20 backwards compatibility with maps, so you can play skyscraper and KMquake2 maps.
>Multiplayer is untouched outside server browser, player limit is now 200 players, so the 64 player maps goes insane.
>Expanded limits due to Q2's behavior, so you get citadel and earth with huge draw range, almost open world.
>This is used later for Heretic 2 once Activision dies out and MS gets Hexen and Heretic rights off the salvage along with what is left of Raven.

In that regard, I'd only want to see the 64 port so the guy who worked on Mission 64 would have most of his work done for him.

Yep, these bitches are just not fun. I've dropped it the last time, when was playing in dosbox (so slower movement and imprecise mouse even with bmouse) and was unable to kill the alien in a bank. It is easier with Raze (runs really smooth), still encounters with both types of aliens were not fun. Really like the art-direction though, besides "dirty redneck town theme" there is really good and diverse set of textures and various minor detail objects, environment feels real. For example Blood beyond E1 was less consistent/memorable. Also quite like the puzzles, though they are usually more hard and obscure than needed.

Just finished the Nut House, it plays really great. The map itself may look simplistic (no weird labyrinths and almost no secret doors), but the atmosphere is amazing. Differents parts of the map have different background noises themes. Gree and blue corridors look and feel like corridors in a real hospital. Entry hall, cells, dining rooms, bathrooms, morgue - all have really distinct texturing. It is similar to Duke E3 maps, but much more detailed. Final puzzle got the difficulty right and final alien was like a classic endboss.

Yeah Nut House is a good map, I actually had a bug there where the background sounds weren't playing in BuildGDX but I guess that's not a thing in Raze. IIRC you also lose all your weapons in that map and why you went there isn't explained at all but shouldn't expect much from it I suppose
You're in the late half of the maps I'm pretty sure, which imo has the better maps. Like Uranium Mines, that mansion and morgue map, whatever they were called. If you like the way RR looks you'll probably love that morgue map, it looks really good from what I remember. One thing though, if you move on to its dlc it ups the difficulty but scales the maps down, you don't have fuck huge maps like Uranium Mines but you have shitload more vixens and way less health items

Maybe the primary objective at this point should be finishing all the phase 1 tiles and combining them into a single map, THEN trying to attract people to make more phase 2 claims? Upon having full knowledge of the surrounding tiles, potential mappers could be more likely to get an idea of what to make. The lines in the WIP image don't tell that much.

I mean, just by thinking about the concept, the only way I could see independent designs combined into one map possibly working out well is if there is extra effort focused towards somehow bridging them together. That's what I imagined phase 2 was meant to serve as when the project idea was first thrown around: that the mappers' task would be to look at all the surrounding tiles, then make something that takes inspiration from and "fits" between them, imitating and weighing various traits at their discretion, such as combat, progression, textures, visual tropes and whatever else there is.

>> No.8401684

>>8401658
If I had got all of the phase 1 tiles done then I would have made a proper "test map" with all of them to help others design tiles for phase 2 but that never happened. I just opened up all the tiles eventually because the project started to die down.
At least the tiles were pretty small so I hope not too much time was wasted on these for those who worked on them. If they can work them into new maps then maybe we won't see all that work gone to waste.

Some do have some weak spots on 2016, but you have to figure on your own. On Eternal they simply hand you some sort of bestiary and basically force you to switch weapons constantly, since some of them simply will do jack shit damage on some enemies for whatever bullshit reason. I just don't like it, I prefer the 2016 way that lets you use the weapon you want, on the enemy you want, and simply punishes you with ammo scarcity if you just use the super shotgun or something like that.

i prefer the complexity of eternal, just using the SSG gets a bit stale relative to eternal, where you have to deal with each enemy differently, you can use the SSG alot, they made it nice and strong in eternal (im pretty sure its meatshots are stronger than the rocket launcher),but its not the end-all weapon like it is in 2016.
and after playing eternal,2016 gets really easy, cause you can quick swap, but the enemies have no answer to it.
even barons just fall after using SSG + ballista or rocket launcher combo so easily.
(and im not calling 2016 bad,its really good, and its effects are even better, and its the only DOOM game to mix good atmosphere with great gameplay,i just like eternal more)

It's not retro, I enjoyed it, but to keep my reply strictly on the topic of retro gaming I'll say that it does nothing particularly new or better than classic with mods. The first thing I thought when I played it was that it felt like Brutal Doom. Doom 2016 actually marks a turning point in my life where I decided modern games have nothing to offer me personally. I started looking back to the games I enjoyed decades ago instead.

>> No.8404261

>>8403567

It's very good, for what it is, but it misses the mark of living up to classic Doom. The mechanics are a matter of taste, but it is undeniably a very polished and well made game. I certainly can't call them bad, but personally I think it (and Eternal) had a couple of key flaws that let it down.

The arena-style monster encounters and combat driven resource management get old real fast. The flow of the game becomes repetitive very quickly, and more importantly, it makes level design all but irrelevant. The environments don't inform the action, they're just differently shaped and coloured arenas. The only exploration is for secrets, but the secrets don't matter, because they're all just arbitrary trinkets, not items that matter to gameplay like extra ammo or health pick ups.

If you look at the reason classic Doom is so enduringly popular after all these years, it's the wealth of maps that constantly find new ways to make the same old concept of guns, monsters, and keycards interesting. Level design is the very core of what holds Doom up after all these years, with exploration and pacing being central to the experience. This is the key aspect the modern franchise is missing; the "rip and tear" meme is all well and good, but when you translate that to a 8-12 hour long campaign, it's already wearing thin by the half way mark.

Nu-Doom is a competent game, but it had no lasting appeal to anybody other than speedrunning autists and Dark Souls difficulty junkies. I played it once, and while I greatly enjoyed it, that was enough. I didn't bother with the expansions, and I don't think I'll ever feel compelled to revisit it.

SSG is not that OP in higher difficulties, it's actually kinda shit if you are a bit over 2 meters away from the enemy (fully upgraded won't even one shot imps) so it actually balances out, since you have to risk HP to deal damage. It's good for one-shooting weak enemies and dealing lots of damage to slow ones, but I would always switch to something else for other stuff. But yeah, it's what will be on your hand most of the time and I like it this way. It's basically the shotgun equivalent of 2016.

Zoomers hate Doom 3 because it's not muh rip'n'tear, but the truth is if you remember playing Doom back in the day when FPS games in general were still new and exciting, it was fucking pants shittingly scary. For a long time, FPS games were almost automatically horror games too, just because the immersion of playing from first person was enough to put you on edge. It's only in the past 10-15 years (since the advent of CoD, Halo, etc) that this really changed.

Doom 3 capitalised on the horror aspect instead of the over the top action, because they thought that's what people remembered it for, and they weren't entirely wrong.

Grappling hook in a shooter like this? I'm fine with the concept, and in the new Doom it's one of the few alt fires that doesn't feel like you're aiming down the sight and pulling the trigger, it goes off when you press alt fire. Would've liked it on a different weapon or at least have its use be independent of any weapons, character design could easily accommodate for it.

So I started a mapping project like a few months back. Got 2 pretty nice detailed levels done for it, playtested them a bunch and I think I managed to get them pretty tight. Now I'm starting on the third, but man I'm just running dry of ideas.

I wanted to make like, this cool flowing Castlevania style mini episode where you start off outdoors in some dark forest area, then you go up into this castle, then through a portal inside the castle into hell for a big finale. Turns out I'm good at making the outdoor areas and caves and all that shit, but I suck at making indoor areas that aren't just boring square rooms and corridors.

How do you make indoor levels that don't suck, Anon? How do you come up with interesting layouts and shit? Got any cool castle keep//dungeon/library etc style maps that might give me some inspiration?

Hugo said that the game wasn't going to have microtransactions at all, so lo and behold, they started repackaging old seasonal FOMO events and selling them. Seems a bit ironic, calling the game "Eternal."

- A lot of stuff I haven't even heard about. Infested? Old Still Life? What even is this?
- Cool idea with the silver cacos and additional 21 recs. They should make something like this last year. But better late than never, I guess.
- Very happy for Doomer Boards, they deserved the award for sure.
- Arlene didn't give herself an award this time, and Death's Dichotomy goes into the trash bin, where it belongs. Not even in 21, heh.
- Overall, very decent picks this time around. Apparently, Omniarch is a much better judge than autist NotJabba. Didn't notice Manrisa either, which is a good thing for sure.
- Sad to see no mention of HFFM, but we all know the reason for that, aren't we?

I'd argue there's a few key differences, but yeah, it's really splitting hairs. Mainly just that Doom has more of an emphasis on high numbers of "chaff" enemies and overall horde control, it's not so much about fighting specific monsters as containing groups.

With Quake the individual enemies tank more hits and require more individual focus. Part of that is even just because of the fully 3D control and viewplane. Doom 3 was basically this, fundamentally- Ever since 3D became the norm, most shooters have been more Quake than Doom.

The main "advancement" since then was more realistic environments, and accordingly, slowing down the pace of movement etc so it doesn't feel quite so strange to sprint around like Sanic. When you look at the overall lineage of FPS games, that iD are basically responsible for creating, Doom 3 was more or less exactly what you'd expect it to be.

The few that are more Doom (Serious Sam, Painkiller, and... Is that all?) only took very specific elements of its gameplay, and drifted into something different entirely. Either way I certainly don't remember anyone at the time saying "Doom 3 isn't really Doom", I feel like that's something you can only really say looking back in retrospect.

(Not that any of this is bad thing IMO, the gameplay of Quake is still incredible to this day, I think I maybe even prefer it; it's just shame the volume of good user content isn't as high as for Doom)

I think it’s fair to say Quake’s enemies tank more hits on average while also mentioning how fast the shotguns are compared to Doom. Then you get the explosives that deal double the damage of the game’s SSG with splash, melting mobs.
Quake does have those weaker mobs present in the game, but they’re used strictly for the start of each episode for the “base” level theme. It might have also been a performance concern at the time. It’s a moot concern these days with user levels making consistent use of the whole roster.

Doom 3 decapitalized the action aspect, because they couldn't have many monsters or projectiles on screen at same time. No computer of the age would have been able to run it otherwise. For same reason they gimped AI. Engine was too demanding. Thus they made it slower-paced semi-horror game with gimped weapons. Id admitted it. For me, it wasn't very succesful as a horror game as the monsters aren't exactly hard to kill and you never run out of ammo. It's not worst game, and i occasionally play it again, but basically just for nostalgia.

doom 3's biggest flaw is expanding the beastiary's actual abilities but even eternal and 2016 makes me think they played a bit safely with expanding enemy attacks, as if some things either wouldn't work in a "doom dance" gameplay style (hence why iconic enemies had to drop their attacks) or they just wanted to keep the power fantasy illusion on

The SSG can end up working nearly the whole time if you've got a bit of patience, and it's not unlike how people can arrive to the conclusion that the SSG is Doom 2's best weapon: Nearly all the baddies love to run at you and get in its ideal range.
If you see an enemy that's outside of that ideal range and that you want to engage, as well as kill everything as fast as possible, then yeup the other weapons become relevant.

Don't fall for the meme. CRT shaders in PC games make no sense.

Playing Doom at 320x240 on your PC monitor was not the same as playing a console at 240p on a TV set. The image was much clearer and wouldn't have the natural anti-aliasing effect because of the much denser shadow mask. It didn't look all that different to a modern display.

Pic related.

The colours are better, the edges are slightly softer, but it doesn't bring anywhere near the same level of fundamental improvement as a 240p TV display does for NES, SNES, arcade games, etc.

I think the community in general, not just /vr/, has had a minor renaissance over the last couple years what with everyone being stuck at home NEETing it up thanks to chinaflu.

Things have been lightening up in that regard over the last few months, so we're seeing people graducally drift away and start re-engaging with their IRL social lives, especially as we come up to the holiday season. But don't worry. There's always OMICRON.

Let's wait til new year and start a project called OMICRON.

Also I think we should make a less gimmicky project next time around. Stuff like 2048 is cool, where you have a restriction to work to that makes people creative; but I think we should give people the chance to stretch their legs. Just give it a general theme and a few ground rules, (i.e no slaughter til the last few maps, limited use of custom assets, the usual stuff) and see what people can do.

Also give a longer timescale, I think there's kinda some imbalance here between the shut in NEETs who can fire out maps in a week and the jobfags who can only spare a couple hours per night.

We will rise again, never fear.

>Phoneposting in any capacity
I don’t give a fuck who you are or where you live. You can count on me to be there to bring your fucking life to a hellish end. I’ll put you in so much fucking pain that it’ll make Jesus being nailed to a cross in the desert look like a fucking back massage on a tropical island. I don’t give a fuck how many reps you have or how tough you are IRL, how well you can fight, or how many fucking guns you own to protect yourself. I’ll fucking show up at your house when you aren’t home. I’ll turn all the lights on in your house, leave all the water running, open your fridge door and not close it, and turn your gas stove burners on and let them waste gas. You’re going to start stressing the fuck out, your blood pressure will triple, and you’ll have a fucking heart attack. You’ll go to the hospital for a heart operation, and the last thing you’ll see when you’re being put under in the operating room is me hovering above you, dressed like a doctor. When you wake up after being operated on, wondering what ticking time bomb is in your chest waiting to go off. You’ll recover fully from your heart surgery. And when you walk out the front door of the hospital to go home I’ll run you over with my fucking car out of no where and kill you. I just want you to know how easily I could fucking destroy your pathetic excuse of a life, but how I’d rather go to a great fuckng length to make sure your last remaining days are spent in a living, breathing fucking hell. It’s too late to save yourself, but don’t bother committing suicide either… I’ll fucking resuscitate you and kill you again myself you bitch-faced phaggot. Welcome to hell, population: you

HUH was literally a newbie mapjam, a few people were for some reason extremely upset that a newbie mapjam was filled with newbie maps of uneven quality.
People are fucking retards.

You are overdosing on copium because Black Crest was not an example of one of the good maps, it was the only great one in that mapset. Everything else was forgettable, mediocre or straight up bad.

Not to be ungrateful, but... It's basically Christmas season already and there's still no version of Ad Mortem that's beatable on UV...

Hope anons do better with the Xmas wad.

But thanks for your work anyway.

2048 is definitely not award material by anyone's standards, but I think there's more good maps in there than just Black Crest. It's a solid C+ mapset, doesn't excel, but also doesn't underperform overall, with a few nice glimmers speckling it throughout.
