8403383 No.8403383[STICKY]  [Reply] [Original]

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/masayuki-uemura-the-designer-of-the-nes-and-snes-has-died-age-78/

>After two years, Uemura and his team had created what Yamauchi had asked for: the Family Computer, or Famicom. Nintendo’s 8-bit console could play interchangeable cartridges and launched with three games: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Popeye.
>Uemura’s R&D2 team was also responsible for the western redesign of the Famicom, which was renamed the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES was just as successful around the world, and combined the Famicom and NES sold 61.91 million units.
>Following the success of its 8-bit console, Nintendo then tasked Uemura with leading the creation of its successor. The result was the Super Famicom / SNES, Nintendo’s 16-bit powerhouse which sold a further 49 million units worldwide.
>In his time at Nintendo, Uemura led the design on the likes of the Famicom Disk System, the Satellaview add-on for the Super Famicom and the NES Zapper.
>He also produced a number of NES games, including Ice Climber, Golf, Tennis, Baseball and the home ports of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Mario Bros.

>Uemura retired from Nintendo in 2004, but continued to collaborate with the company as an advisor.

He also only designed the NES and SNES, and just those. They have faults but were highly competitive machines with reasonable weaknesses and advantages. Then they go to SGI to create a hamstrung monstrosity, and SGI spent more time celebrating that they got a contract with Nintendo than actually designing a good system. The GameCube was in theory a return to form, but it was too little, too late, and its minidisks were a pointless limitation. Had the SNES successor followed the same path as the NES and SNES, publishers would've put up with the GameCube's weirdness out of good will alone.

doubtful
uemura was head of R&D2 up until 06
considering how cancer works, he couldve easily been battling it for the past 15yrs off and on. could be why he retired in the first place idk. most dont make that kind of info public if they can help it, doubly so for nips

gunpei yokoi was a different matter
in spite of the mountains of cash he made them prior, the virtual boy was the biggest failure in nintendo history. then he """resigned""" and turned right around and started his own company that produced THE biggest competitor at least in japan to his own GB, costing them even MORE money

even if one doesnt believe he got rubbed out, its abundantly clear that yokoi did not resign of his own accord
he was forced to, and clearly felt bitter enough about it to go into direct competition with them immediately after

Rest in peace, lord.
Thank you, for everything, especially the SNES!
The sounds, mode 7, the memories, and the brain tickling nostalgia you gave to my senses, and my mind.
Precious.

I adore you, I respect you, I look up to you, I wish you rest easily and start anew, but just as wonderful in which reality grace!

>> No.8412132

This is a meta question not specifically directed towards /vr/, but why are death announcements the only stickies? I mean, I guess /v/ sometimes gets stickies for E3 or whatever, and /sp/ gets stickies for championship game threads. But everything else for other boards (besides the stickies explaining the rules of the board) are just to announce someone died.

>> No.8412167

>>8412132
such is the nature of a retro board. You can't really have new developments in hardware and software. That's not retro.
But the passing of developers responsible for the hardware and software of the board? That's pretty relevant here.
