Yes. For those who don't know, this is the fabled Chu Teng, sequel to Eastern Mind, the predecessor of LSD Dream Emulator. Launched at 1998, or so say rumors.

This game is pretty fucking rare, in a sense that it would be easier to find a physical copy than a download floating around.

The ending to Eastern Minds seemed very open ended. It takes a lot of skill and finesse to even accomplish most tasks outside of knowing the language. But it took me to a vers. Of reality I never hoped to depart. Anybody who has accomplished the task of EASTERN Minds understands what i am feeling. All other games are progress, Eastern Minds is the end.

There will be around 900 million results, and one of them has a link to an auction to buy the game. You and a few dozen other people will compete in the auction. Either way, it means that older OSX PowerPC macs should be able to run it via Classic, fucking forget it with anything newer though. It's not like Windows where just a patch or whatever can make it run older Windows games.

Basilisk ][, Sheepshaver, or a VM of classic mac is your best bet.

This guy is an experimental musical artist, everything he does is a total trip. LSD, Eastern Mind and anything else he might have done (like that iOS monster maker thing) are ventures into other forms of media but still more about the visuals and music. You can barely call them games really so on top of having a limited run they don't really have much interest from the game playing perspective which is how they ended up being really obscure. >> No.842339

this might also give hints to what chu-teng is about. it's from the tong-nou illustrated book in the game, the second-to-last chapter. perhaps it's telling us what happens in the space between the two games?:

"VII. Tong-Nou Prophecy

The Tong-Nou Isle consists of five lands. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Souls travel with change to be reborn afresh. The souls branch out to five fragments. The Magatama are fragments of a soul. Magatamas of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water branch and store force. The five forces of Magatama are Life, Confrontation, Source, Eternity and Change.

The Magatamas are cleansed and returned as new souls. Gaze at the image of beauty, Tong-Nou Isle and the sending forth of souls. The Sun, the sign of abundance, is rising once again with its unlimited force.

Soon, when exactly 9081726354 souls are cleansed, for a limited time only, he who officiates the roots of all souls will appear from the head of Tong-Nou. Four pairs of twins will then be delivered. They will be called Bibo and Pipo, Babebu and Babebo, Jido and Jizo, and Dadezu and Zazezu.

The quaternion of twins will unite their forces and head towards the Sun in the heavenly sky, then proceed on into outer space. Finally, Tong-Nou will be set free. But so far, this talk of the future lies distant as in dreams."

To preface my questions, I'd like to point out that I understand this game series has a sort of mythological story behind it (Japanese folk-tales and such), and I'm not doubting the creativity or the amount of thought put into these games; I'm doubting the creator's sanity/lucidity.

Questions:
- Without psychedelic drugs, do these games make a lick of sense outside of Japan?
- Are they worth playing without any research, or am I going to have to read 10 pages of Japanese folklore to comprehend any of it?

>> No.842893 [DELETED]

>>842876
1) yes, if you're willing to invest time into understanding the world and the characters within (although truthfully some of the characters in eastern mind are a little confusing in regards to 'what the fuck do you even do', namely such characters as tbc and mong-i, who have relatively zero plot significance and just show up to talk about some trivial conundrum that you couldn't give a shit about. the rest of the world and mythos is actually quite interesting, and while its basic roots are in old chinese or japanese folklore, i.e. the 5 worlds representing the 5 elements; wood, fire, earth, water and metal, but the rest is actually quite original.

though yes, all of his games seem to be somewhat reminiscent of an awful trip. i will say that much. a hell of an interesting one though. in my opinion at least.

>> No.842895

>>842876
most of it's original. if you read through the tong-nou illustrated book which is an item in-game, it tells you a lot about the worlds, characters, and myth surrounding tong-nou. it's quite an intricate world although i think it could've been pulled off better

the ending is as follows:

"In Tong-Nou, there is no end.
The Sun,the Moon and the Stars portray a triangle
and revolve within Chu-Teng.
The Sun glares, the Moon shines calmly,
and the Stars sparkle in the sky.
Everything will continue eternally by performing repetition.
Time is located within this accumulation of repetition.
Here, life is not a beginning and death is not an ending.
Your soul will travel on to the next life and again on to the next.
This journey will never come to an end.
Everything will continue eternally by performing repetition.
Eventually your soul will speak to you.
The soul will speak of the time spent with each journey.
Your life is one part of this enormous transmigration.
The infinite repetition of life creates this enormous transmigration.
All that has been accumulated is of value.
Fortune and misfortune, pleasure and suffering,
the useful and useless.
All that has been acquired will be inherited to the next life.
Your soul will continue this traveling eternally.
Into the infinite and eternal future."

All I've ever needed to rip old Mac CDs is UltraISO for Windows. Just make an ISO, like you would of a PC game. (Unless there are extra tracks for CD audio or copy protection, in which case UltraISO will offer to make a BIN/CUE instead.)

Pop the ISO into Mac OS 7/8/9 and mount it with this utility, and you can play the game:

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/virtual-dvd-romcd-utility

Or you can burn the image and get a playable hard copy. It even works if the CD is a PC/Mac hybrid (both partitions will be contained in the ISO, and it will mount/play on both platforms.)

Similar programs like Nero or Alcohol will probably work just as well. But there's no need to mess around with extracting Mac-format files from the disc.

I would recommend Daemon Tools Lite
for extracting/ripping. Don't install the sptd driver as it is just for mounting images. .mdx format is a newer version of bin/cue (prior was mdf/mds), it is somewhat tolerant of copy protections as well. No guarantees if Sony slipped some obscure copy protection onto Sato's obscure baby. Unlikely, but a consideration.

So I have a friend who is a recently graduated triple language major, one of them being Japanese. He worked as a Japanese tutor at a private high school for a while too. He loves LSD and actually introduced me to the game. Unfortunately he doesn't 4chan, but I can act as a go between. What are the current things that we needed someone fluent in Japanese for?

I may also have a connection living in Japan, but I need to check if he's still over there. He's gaijin though, so he'd mainly be helpful as a mailing address.

This is an actually rare game, it's going to take a lot longer then a single night for something to be found about it.

These threads keep popping up every once in awhile ever since this board started. I remember a random couple on /v/ too but mostly geared towards LSD.

This thread has been the most information we've gathered so far. You guys are actually making progress.

Where the palyer explores a surrealistic mechanical world of strange beings and odd machines.

Should we have an eternal Chu-Teng thread until it is found?

Or should we just keep having a thread every couple weeks?

Does anybody know any japanese gaming forums where we could ask about this? 2chan doesn't work with any proxies that I could find.

>> No.846965

>>846934

Why would you need a proxy to go on 2chan?

Also, you could try TOR. I use it to go on torrent sites that are blocked by my ISP.

Foreign IPs are blocked from posting on futaba. And I've heard many proxies don't work. They really don't want gaijin posting. A Japanese VPN might work.

You can't post to 2chan outside of Japan. I've tried several proxies but they are all banned from 2chan.

Guys, this is sorta unrelated, but I recently got the book "The Art of Computer Design" by Osamu Sato and in it was a "gift disk", a little floppy disk. Are people interested in seeing what's inside? I can try to find a disk reader if that's the case.

There's a 100% FLAC rip on what.cd, but it doesn't include the CD-ROM for obvious reasons.
