None. I'm learning japanese. 2+ years in and counting. Fan translations have gotten really bad over the last few years. Lunatics are putting pressure on translators to scrub out "problematic" language, really weird fads are starting to creep in, like purposely doing bad translations to make them "in the style" of a 1990s official translation, complete with mistakes and censorship etc.
And there's those "relocalizations" where someone who doesn't know a single word of japanese just re-writes the script to sound cooler with modern pop culture references.
What a complete waste of time.

The motivation for translators to finish Klonoa Heroes only resulted in a half patch.
Interest died down once the furfags at Untamed Heart Forums translated the story to write their KlonoaxGuntz fanfictions.
However, someone made a full blown text and image editor/replacer in Klonoa Heroes fairly recently, so it's only a matter of time before some other fan translation group actually finishes the job and translates the whole thing.

I'm doing a machine translation of a similar dating sim that will never, ever get a real translation because it's both niche as fuck and the text has the same issue as Segagaga that makes it unhackable without completely rewriting most of the game. Honestly I think I'm getting past the point of waiting on others to translate shit for me and I'm looking to just take the plunge and learn the language already
Even with the occasional new translation popping up every couple of months, I don't want to get over reliant on them and the more anticipated stuff seems to take literal years to get done. A lot of what I want to play is too niche for other people to really give a shit about anyway, lots of NEC PC games and WonderSwan stuff
You also have the obnoxious Twitter-obsessed progressivist faglords who are actively involved with J-to-E translations with all sorts of Japanese media now who can't help themselves with either censoring content to better suit their personal values or punch up dialogue for the sake of it. That was frankly the last straw for me

It seems like the frequency of people inserting their own bullshit into translations isn't as high as it seems, but at the same time it would suck to stumble into a bad translation and not know it. Anyone really into games wouldn't be making the wrong decision to learn Japanese, especially if they also like manga or anime.

If you do start learning slant, it's a good idea to watch some footage of a game on youtube to get an idea of how hard its vocabulary is first. Stuff you would expect to be easy like Dragon Quest or FF can turn out hard, honestly it's kinda random.

Sometimes interfered with their approval on romhacking databases, requested their removal, or some games he "claimed" (as many as 40 at one time, the list staying mostly the same for a decade) not to be translated or discussed without his permission. Those "rules" were gradually eroded, then became unenforceable after the stunt he pulled with SMT:if (said it's almost ready but he won't release it until "the SMT fanbase apologizes to him", then released a bunch of small Super Robot Taisen platformers translators because "the SRT fanbase behaves themselves better". Active, but by many concurrent teams, one of which is LuminaTales, a newly founded team with zero releases that's shilled on reddit and gaming sites as the "best" team. It turns out it has a lot of people from GeoFront and ResetEra and they have a habit of "claiming" popular games, mucking with their translations, and using the projects as status symbols. Most damningly, they try to attack existing teams, try to drive them into retirement then use their work (text translations, patches) without permission or credit after spending their time shilling against it and even attacking players discussing it. They're toxic harassers.
I wouldn't support their work and would support the other team for both of these instances.

Does the fan patch for Goemon 3 have the tranny line or not? I know the originally released Tom translation had it in but does the bug fix patch also remove it, cause I know they replaced the patch on romhacking with a censored one

>> No.8387607

>>8387541
RHDN stopped approving future DDS updates to his patches unless he would release a patch that censors the line, so a version 3.0 was made that included the toned down "newhalf" version and the original "tranny" version, alongside some layout changes to prevent a game breaking glitch present in the original game in stage 4 (ironically near the tranny npc in question)

RHDN had him release a version numbered 4.0 that removes most of the readme and which is the 3.0 "newhalf" version alone. They then approved that alongside a bugfix for Goemon 2 that was held up for no real reason as their coercion card.

3.0 turned out to be broken. Some discussion of this happened on the RHDN forums, but not so surprisingly the mods and "new members" so eager to give Goemon 3 an "update" no longer wanted any updates or technical discussion of any kind about that game, and would close topics and later ban top contributors, only changing their tone after people started bypassing RHDN entirely as their distribution medium. RHDN started accepting third party uploads of persona non grata translators with weird caveats such as not crediting some of them, because they were too high profile to ignore, despite getting told by some of those translators they don't like their stuff there.

DDS commented about 3.0 and gave a list of bytes to change to fix the problem, anons on /vr/ found more stuff to fix, and then worked on a version dubbed the 3.1 version. Guess which fork was used. This makes it effectively the best version of the translation, in more ways than one. That bug fix couldn't have been made in any other way.

Honestly it’s all pretty ironic that by kicking up a fuss and forcing Tom to change “tranny” to “newhalf”, they completely changed the tone of the scene; and for the worse! The original gag is that the character is a crossdresser. A transvestite, nothing more. Transexuals in the west shitting themselves because they think everything is a personal attack and demanding it be changed, funnily enough, actually made the scene more offensive. Linda Cubed/Planet Laika guy here.
Basically all the balls for Linda and Planet Laika are in Esper's court, and he's been working on and off and is extremely close on the text. I also post updates to stuff on Twitter. I'd been busy all autumn helping someone with an irl medical issue, but on the off-side, I've been organizing a Kowloon's Gate group via Discord, just need more hackers but otherwise all the groundwork for the translation itself is pretty done.

In all, I'm interested in working with more hackers on any of these things if at least to help lighten Esper's load since he helps a fuckton of people as-is. 99.9999999% of people who offer their help with projects are English testers/proofreaders, so we have a lot on standby, but just no technical work getting done.

I also have a draft for the PSP version of TMA4 (which has two extra areas, but rewriting it to code is a bitch because you have to manually add code for what I think is every individual mouth flap back into the freaking game.

Also, I thought RetroTom was posting pictures of Tokimeki updates on Twitter. He deletes things very quickly off his own page, but I think DDS or whoever posted to their twitter as well.

Hacking the PSX version with Esper (who is a veteran on that console in particular) has already proven uphill enough, so even touching Saturn wasn't in our to-do list, so if someone else wants to take that on as a cosmetic project for his or herself, that's fine.

I compared full Saturn and PSX scripts side by side when translating and there might be two or three dialogue differences. And they're more like different iterations of the same offense.

The game doesn't say anything worth having a Goemon Manifesto over to begin with, and I don't censor. So i.e. there's one guy who admits to first having sex with much older women when he was under-aged. Between the saturn and the playstation versions, the only difference in the story is who hits on him. (In one, it's an old neighbor lady, in another, it's a friend's mom, but they don't change the guy's original age when he's telling the story to the player or anything.)

The fade-to-black/implied sex scenes all play out the same in each, and the animal abuse/gore/rape allegories are also written 1;1.

I'm not recalling the lines 500% accurately off the top of my head, but that's really the extent of it. Besides that, you're literally just looking at some minute sprite differences. If you want the REALLY unique bits like the giving birth scene, go play the PC version.

Also, if it helps, the Saturn version has piss fmv audio quality, if anyone here's a stickler for that sorta thing. You sound all right, but it's shocking how many muhcensor-bros on other boards worry about us not prioritizing this port. Mark this the last time I answer this one for free.

I'd argue that having a separate site from rhdn is easier to access since you won't have to sift through other bullshit and inane hacks to access that one hack that you want to see.
Documentation would also be easily accessed that way since you can dedicate an entire web page for it too. Look at Ultima for FFIV, it has its own website, and rhdn just leeches from it every time a new update comes up.

the game itself is a traditional top-down RPG but all the battles are boss fights that only spawn near the end of a chapter, while most of the gameplay consists of talking to npc's, doing fetch quests and solving a puzzle. Furthest ive gotten into the game was pushing these frog people into specific puddles for a puzzle, which iirc is into the 4th chapter.

Wonderful news... Please consider preparing a script variant for the Saturn version. It's one of the worse cases of content not surviving the Saturn/PlayStation conversion (not even the final boss sequence is intact, either visually or textually) but the PSP version has some fun mechanics.

A Chinese PSP translation came out, and they might've figured out the limitations with the EBOOT and compressed files. Using their files isn't a bad idea at all. Both that and the Saturn version support ASCII text (see pic related).
Graphics are still unknown.

>Kwolong Gate
Funnily enough I remember a PS1 romhacking tutorial from ages ago (partially lost on the web archive) that details how to mod the game's programming from its JP status to one that relatively plays well with the translation, and it did use Kwolong Gate specifically (safe to say that particular project was abandoned, but the tutorial itself would be useful...)

- Code/Memory: Ensure an English font is loaded if the game uses the system font
- Code/Display: Change the font's xadvance from 12/16 to 6/8 pixels (monospace, but bearable)
- Code/Memory: Change character reads from double byte to single byte, to fit in more English text
- Asset/GFX: Change the font graphics to the ASCII-EU set, scrub the rest and use it as memory to host translation-related code/dictionary
- Code/Memory+Display: Adjust (2) to allow for proportional fonts (reading from a width table)
- Code/Memory: Adjust (3) to allow for text compression, dictionary was good enough for SNES scripts, LZ is more involved

I think if more romhackers got (3) right (or a different way to put in all of the English text) and didn't bother with the proportional font (just changing the character spacing should be enough) more English translations for PS1/Saturn/DS could be out at a similar rate as Spanish patches.

Couldn't find a discord link for it. You can prepare a public channel and invalidate the invite later from the discord settings.

To those asking about Metal Max 4, the team going through the mainline games just got done with 2's remake and will release it sometime soon this month. Don't expect any spinoffs. Don't skip Metal Saga PS2 either, it's a mainline game renamed that way because of trademark issues, and the actual MM3.
It's a shame that the first MM games brought to the West were those that had a more linear quest, in that regard MM4 is one of the last "authentic" games in the series.

Don't bother with the original SNES version of 2, it's shit (play 1R SNES instead) and its translation in development hell.

This isn't the actual last Quintet game btw, though it IS the last one under their name. That would be Soul Eater Monotone Princess for the Wii which got a fan translation a few weeks ago. (Some WiiWare game released after that + Actraiser VC, but they were done much earlier while the team for Soul Eater had to physically relocate to another developer's building mid-development).

I think it's overrated, though it looks really similar to Terranigma (the sprites, the text animations, everything). It is straightforward to romhack and translate if interest is there. They finally implemented proportional text for their very last 2D RPG too!

The remakes are objectively better. The original developers were still involved in the remakes and implemented a lot of cut content in 2 (for example the final boss has a third phase).
2 on SNES is one of the ugliest looking JRPG I played (even the font spacing is unbearable) even though the concept is solid. The DS remake really did it justice with a decent budget and beautiful pixel art that blends well with the low poly 3D.

The Kai remakes on GBA... let's pretend those don't exist. They're somehow uglier than the originals.

The only things anyone can really go off of is some of the things said by Aerdan/Kiyoshi Aman who was later kicked from the Discord, came back and just stopped showing up due to not wanting to be associated with the site for not being woke enough, making suggestions that they should do more woke "news" articles at least once a week. The second is Zynk Oxhyde, who was merely taken off the mod team for saying something about "SJWs" over an LGBT-oriented hack he took down for "political reasons", but he still contributes content. He has a Twitter dedicated to a cringey obsession with Roll and tends to retweet SFW, "UOOOOOOOHHH" pics of her every other day.
Things spiraled downhill a bit since the RHDN purge of the "offensive" hacks from baddesthacks in 2016, where Aerdan, Zynk & the rest of them were in agreement to remove the hacks like Little Remo - The Child Abuser, which was one that got removed from both sites in the process.
The only proven sex offender on the registry I remember was one of PokeCommunity's old admins:

Waiting for the Rent-a-Hero Dreamcast English translation. It’s currently in progress. Not sure when it’ll drop.

They've changed their ways, the forums are now condemning retards who cry about old translations having such "problems" since they were accurate to what was said. The goemon will be the last autism retardatio there.
