They dropped the ball with 2. Everything looks weird and lazy compared to 1, even Jim's idle animation looks strange. The music was also a huge downgrade, plus as you point out the gameplay variety often resulted in segments far worse than the platforming stages.

That early EWJ2 prototype was good for a laugh, and showed that the developers fucking loved Puppy Love, and it was one of the first things they got mostly finished.

I remember I broke into someone's house when it was empty and I saw they had that game on their PC. I ended up booting up their PC and played it for hours. So long that someone returned and I scrambled and had to turn off the PC to hide I was there and climb out a window to escape. Earthworm Jim saved their possessions, I guess. Good times.
