Best game in the series?

IMO, V and VI. The first two games were pretty limited. III isn't bad but has many extremely annoying things in it. VII was Disney-fied crap, and VIII...dear God what the fuck was that?

>> No.837326

I've played I-IV. Have V, but never really tried to play it.

>> No.837323

I had 5 as a kid. Fuck I hated that game, way too fucking hard. When I checked a walkthrough at some point it blew my mind how bullshit that game was. Want an example? At some point you have to LITERALY search for a needle in a haystack! It's like the developers are aware of their bullshit and trolling us.

This kind of adventure games where puzzles don't even make sense are for masochists.

KQ8 came out after the Sierra sale to Vivendi. The Williamses had nothing to do with it at all.

>> No.837503

Sierra games were designed to be as cruel as possible because in the early days, that was the only way they could really stretch out a game.

>> No.837513

I really want to have a look at some old Sierra games like King's Quest or Gabriel Knight. But the bullshit riddles are too much for me.

You kind of summed up the whole issue of playing 80s-era vidya. People who didn't actually live through that era and try to play them often have a hard time dealing with the limitations on gameplay that were imposed by technical constraints.

I'd argue that it is especially bad with Sierra games. I haven't played 80ies/90ies adventures in a long time, but I don't think that LucasArts games or Broken Sword had that many that stupid riddles. Still, I find the atmsophere of King's Quest and/or Gabriel Knight quite interesting.

VI is without any doubt the best game in the franchise, in those days Sierra finally fixed all the problems they had with their adventure games. Also, dat theme song.

IOW, you're saying that gamers who grew up in the 90s and later are too soft and spoiled for 8/16 bit stuff.

Of course. You bring up a C64 or whatever game here and since most of /v/ only had a PS2 for their first console, they're a buncha babies who look at the game and go "Eww, dem Lego Block graphics"

as someone who's 29 I can tell you most people couldn't stand the riddles ad what not back then.
Heck lots of people couldn't stank tank controls in RE games back then.
Gaming got popular because it became easier to play. A lot of gamers today would not have been gamers in say 88 because the challenge/gameplay style would not have interest them.

By that logic minecraft would have never become popular.

They had no choice, my soon-to-be-wizard friend. Innovation comes about because people are dissatisfied with the status quo. Else we'd be living in caves still and wondering if rocks are edible.

...but that basically proves my point that gamers back then were made of much tougher stuff than in the COD age

>> No.837734

I don't think anyone has ever wondered if rocks were edible for any length of time longer than what it takes to pick up a rock and give it a taste
