I'll post one of my units, my primary to be precise. I don't feel like grabbing my SPs and original grape GBA and taking another picture.
>>8369238
I know that feeling. I' have a decent collection of GBA units, and have practically played one or more of them every day since 2001. I love my modded GBA and use it daily, but because I bought a used GBA early last year for $50 and the IPS kit, it feels like I should wait before possibly spending more on it in the future. I could have modded my teenage GBA but it has too much sentimental value to me.

I used to use an original DS before I later got a lite and gave my original to my brother. It's not bad, but I prefer to the lite. The main issues are

I think the dimmer screen works better for the color palettes of GBA games. On the Lite they're very oversaturated. There's also some variation in DS phat screens, the later ones have substantially better screens.
DS battery is brilliant for GBA games regardless, so I don't find that to be an issue.
And regarding controls, the dpad on the fat is far superior to the mushy lite.

That was only really true of a select few early-gen GBA games. It wasn't a standard for the whole system. Also DS lite let you select between 5 stages of brightness, so you could set the brightness to the lowest setting to be on par with the original fat DS, if you so chose.

>> No.8370008

>>8369994
>That was only really true of a select few early-gen GBA games. It wasn't a standard for the whole system.
Even later GBA games were expecting a completely different sort of screen to the DS Lite. The frontlit SP screen still tends to wash out color so they send to have excessive contrast to compensate.
> Also DS lite let you select between 5 stages of brightness, so you could set the brightness to the lowest setting to be on par with the original fat DS, if you so chose.
The late fat screens are brighter than the earlier ones, and with a firmware mod, you can adjust the brightness levels of those too.

I started collecting GBA last summer and since then the obession has encompassed all nintendo handhelds.

I kind of want a Micro just out of curiosity, but I'm not paying the prices they go for just to satisfy my curiosity.

By far my favorite way to play GBA games is on a GBA SP with a AGS-101 screen. I like it better than using an IPS or using the wide original GBA model. Console modders btfo, the best way to play GBA is still original hardware

The big secret that no one brings up because most of the people who mod the GBA keep them on shelves to display or only play pokemon:

IPS screens oversaturate the hell out of the image, making lots of games look mediocre/bad. The oversaturation of the IPS screens crush the subtle depth of field offered by shading in games like Wario 4 and Minnish Cap.

almost every custom gameboy I have has been assembled from scratch.
my white sp was a motherboard I had lying around.
my glacier gba was beat pretty bad, otherwise it was completely functional. still have the original shell (white) and screen somewhere.
my gb light is actually my second gb light, both have missing lines and both are unfixable, I opted to replace the shell so I didn't had to cut the original one.
for all my other gba's, I bought lone motherboards.
my dmg and color I bought them modded. biverting is hard to do correctly without getting dusk in the screen and the color found it at a good price, so just went ahead instead of doing it myself like I was planning to.

Most of the mods people do to gameboys are plug and play, which means they can be undone with minimal effort. Also it will take a lot of people modding obsolete game systems (obsolete both by being old, and by being superceded by superior methods of play) in order to even make a dent in the number of "pristine" consoles.

I really wanna get a modded GBA again, preferably with the newer IPS kits since my last one had a pretty shoddy aftermarket AGS 101, ended up selling it when money was tight. What's the best screenkit solution these days? Also, have the rechargeable USB-C batteries improved? Remember the first batch of them being a bit iffy.
In the meantime I'm using my Surface Duo as an emulation machine, same gamepad setup as >>8369292 but with the Bluetooth version. I gotta say, really good DS emulator machine in particular, partway through TWEWY and I'm also looking to finally play Gen5 and HGSS, pic for reference

coming home I went and downloaded the rom, but it wasn't the same.
later on I saved money and bought a second hand 101 sp (without even knowing the ags-001 existed, only the og gba) that came with a shitty yugioh game, dungeon dice monsters, and some more time later bought metroid fusion. it was fucking great.

I was having a great time with my EZFlash for the GBA until the memory card corrupted for like the 4th time. Shit just happens at random, but it's almost inevitable. The GB/GBC emulation is also garbage and half the games you'd actually want to play don't work properly.

Yeah, I use my OG shell as well, I was just pointing out that retro six shells and buttons suck. They don't feel good. Showing off a Retrosix device is like holding up a sign that says "I don't actually play this, I leave it on the shelf". If you must use non-OEM buttons / shells, use Funnyplaying. But you should really be using OEM. Plus, the dude behind retrosix is a sleazeball. Here's my GBA, all OEM parts except for the screen, which is a DSi screen kit from Funnyplaying which retains 1:1 pixels and is brighter than the AGS 101 screen. Feels perfect to play.

i fell for the retrosix meme when i first started modding and have been sour about it ever since
