What's your favourite Metroid game, /vr/?

The original. I love the sheer openness of the game and its no-frills, no bullshit design.

What the shit, I thought for sure I had selected my image of Metroid.

>> No.836247

Super. Echos gets an honorable mention for being underrated and is probably my favorite Gamecube game.

>> No.836250

Fusion. I think Super is almost as good, but I disliked how Super lacked any narrative besides the prologue and epilogue.

I also loved the SA-X and I think it perfectly capitalized on the atmosphere Metroid games are supposed to have. I liked the Prime games too, but they way more actiony and I never feel creeped out or lonely while playing Prime.

Prime, for me.

>>836270
I wouldn't call Metroid a platformer.
Still, you shouldn't be playing Metroid for the story. That's how we get games like Other M.

>> No.836273

In all honesty, Echoes.
I felt like Prime was the perfect follow-up to Super and did an incredible job converting it to 3D, even surpassing it. Then Echoes took the strengths of Prime and went crazier with the lore, art design, atmosphere and equipment.

I even liked the dark world mechanic. Backtracking is a big thing in every Metroid game excluding Return of Samus, Fusion and Other M, so it was neat for them to add new challenges during the backtracking via the Dark World. Kept it more fresh and it felt less like busy work.

I hate Final Fantasy VI because there aren't any platforming stages.

>> No.836284

>>836250
I'm the opposite, the communication with the computer in Fusion and Samus's little internal monologues kind of took me out of it a bit. I like the feeling of being completely alone in Super. I'd say Fusion and Zero Mission are tied for second, though.

>> No.836295

>>836250
The only thing preventing me from considering Fusion one of the best games is the forced dialouge with Adam.
Not the story stuff, but all the useless objective shit and repeated info he tells you every time you enter and exit an area. The shit's tedious and breaks the pace.

I also wish it was a bit longer and had a bigger map, but I can forgive that considering it was a GBA game.

How does "almost as good" read as "hate" to you?

Summer /v/ creeping into /vr/?

Other M, probably.
I like how they finally decided to give Samus a personality. She's also really sexy.

Good joke, Anon.

>> No.836317

I liked the complete isolation and loneliness of Super Metroid. I think pacing-wise, atmosphere-wise and gameplay-wise it's superior to any other Metroid game - or really any in its genre.

However I am embarrassed to admit this but Prime 3's little wagglan gimmicks - opening doors, fucking with the levers and buttons on the ship, ripping enemy shields out of their hands with a ripping motion of the nunchuk etc - make it my second favourite. I felt very immersed by all this actual physical motion.

Metroid threads in general can be pretty hostile. Tons of bitching between Super fans and Prime/Fusion fans.
The series' recent history has probably made tensions high, and it's worse on /vr/ since the board is filled with people who have nostalgia towards the retro titles.

It's not a joke though?
I only played Zero Metroid and Other M, but Other M is my favourite.

When has a Super fan ever bitched at a Prime fan?
There aren't even many people who only like one or the other. Most Metroid fans generally like all the games in the series (except MOM).

You don't have enough experience with the franchise. You aren't entitled to a favorite.

Wow, this thread degenerated pretty fast.

Why are Metroid fans so intolerant of other people's opinions? Different people like different things about the games. Maybe if you stopped posting knee-jerk, autistic reactions to anyone who doesn't toe the line with your opinions you could try and have a civil conversation with them about the franchise.

Oh wait, this is 4chan.

We're not.
It's just not OK to like Other M. It's like going into a Devil May Cry thread and praising DmD: Devil May Cry.

I don't really get this. GBA cartridges tended to hold more than SNES cartridges. Metroid Fusion rom is over twice the size of Super Metroid's, for example. Or is it a budget thing?

Super gives you lots of tools to find out hidden passages without holding your hand at all, if that's what you're asking.
If you want your hand held play Zero Mission.

>> No.837447

>>837273
If you're struggling, Zero Mission and Fusion are good introductory games to get used to the gameplay style.
Super is more straight-forward than the original Metroid, but even then it has some moments that can screw over an inexperienced player.

>> No.837493

I liked Super the most. I don't really get why people like the SA-X in fusion so much, I felt more nervous during the suitless parts of ZM than during the hide from SA-X parts.

Samus really could do with a better voice actor. I know Samus is feeling sad and all because of "The baby!" But goddamn put some emotion in your voice.

I always Samus being like Master Chief personality wise.

I'm hating myself for saying this; but DmC is not nearly as bad in screwing he series over.
At least you can ignore DmC if you don't like it, but Other M is part of the metroid timeline.
Plus, the worst thing about DmC was not the game itself, but how Ninja theory and capcom treated there fans.

Most of the shitflinging and "hurr FPS Halo clone" is started by Other M apologists, or by trolls pretending to be Other M apologists (it's impossible to tell the difference because Other M is so bad that defending it is subject to Poe's Law).

There's also the matter of ACfag antagonizing the aforementioned groups, who otherwise would have remained silent. This happens to just about every Metroid thread on /v/.

The fault is not with the voice actor, but with the director Sakomoto. In the few scenes were Samus actually DOES emote (such as the Ian flashback) she actually does it pretty well. Sakomoto basically ordered her to be flat and monotone during the monologues.

Flip Zero Mission and Fusion around and lower Prime 1 and 2 to God Tier and that would be mine.

>> No.839364

Oh, I have no doubt that Sakamoto squandered her potential. Having a native Japanese person try to direct an English VA was a terrible idea to begin with.

But the fact they turned away Jennifer fucking Hale from reprising her role, then accepted a girl who had never had a serious role before, is dumb.
