There is an exploit that I never see talked about much but it absolutely breaks the game. In SMTI estoma is glitched, when you use it it never actually wares off, resulting in you having literally no encounters at all. The only time it resets is when you change between the overworld and dungeons. Thought the earliest you can get it is level 28 though so it does take a bit.

In my experience humans seem like they're ridiculously more difficult to recruit then demons, sometimes I would need to encounter like a dozen or so before finally having one join. My guess is they probably thought no one would go out of their way to recruit humans and it would be a neat trick for people to find, but the fact you can do it within the game's opening hours is still pretty broken.

Honestly I think it's for the best it's there, you're basically going to need Anubis and Shiva so they can spam Holy Wrath against the hp sponge bosses. I was ridiculously unprepared for the mid game boss gauntlet but was able to clear it first try still thanks to Anubis.

They're are labyrinth and resource management games. Modern JRPG fans HATE labyrinths and mazes. It's a similar situation where modern Zelda fans go back and play 1-2, and just abhor them because even though its officially the same series the style of game is just radically different and in fact the opposite of the kind of game they like.

Tackling a giant maze and beating it without any guides is a really cool idea. Having abstract combat that is off-screen boils it down so that you're more of a manager getting reports rather than fighting yourself. Adding animations and graphics doesn't add anything to it and are in fact a step back. Both labyrinths and abstract combat are right out of the spirit of D&D.

He gets "Redeemed" as a hero but holy shit he's a piece of shit. Him being the reincarnation of some god seems like an asspull as well. The OVA condenses book 1 and it's okay for what it is. It has at least 2 great scenes of pure horror and it has a nice art style. But it is pretty forgettable like most cheap OVA.

Remember that SMT is meant to be a console friendly simplified version of Wizardry meant to be able to be beaten by teenage kids. Even without stun-lock chaining, it's not that hard. Agility is one of the best bang for your buck stats (increases speed, evasion, defense, and gives you more turns).

I didn't save scum through that dungeon. I had a lot of sleep guns so I kept people machine gunned down. And then I used powerful demons in the front row as my brawlers. For the boss, she chewed through most of them.

The PS fixed this by adding more graphical variety. Remember also that this is a Super Famicom title from the early 90's and it feels like a massive story and setting with massive buildings. Lokoing back nearly 30 years later it's easy to see what it's not vs what it is and how this would have blown away kids at the time. The idea of a story and setting being so mature with moral complexity with such a large world was something else.

I'm using this guide to play it right now https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/snes/564896-shin-megami-tensei/faqs/52976

I could beat it without the guide but it would just take me another 20 hours of repetitive encounters getting lost in wearisome dungeons with a poorly detailed map.

Everyone seems to contradict one another with the stat distribution for characters. Some say strength is useless for the Hero, others say you need at least 10 INT for negotiations, etc.
what is objectively the best way to build everyone if someone were looking to absolutely destroy the game with min-maxing?

>> No.8360503

>>8360497
It seems like you dont understand the game. You dont destroy anything with the main character, his DPS is too low until you get the end gear weap like Masakados. And even with that you need 5x tarukaja for him to do shit.
You either make him a tank with str/vit or a dodger with agi/luck. His job is to use guns/items to support your heroine and demons. Stat investments in INT are unnecessary you can just feed him the incense you pick up.

All a matter of personal preference. Strength builds make the beginning of the game, which is the hardest part of the game, way easier.
Agi/luck builds are tough in the beginning but become a breeze near mid game since you will hardly ever be ambushed, and you will be able to escape every battle.
When I play I pump my first twenty stat points into luck, I enjoy the challenge it brings. This also let's you get drops more frequently. For example, Zombie soldiers will drop you alot of MP5s in the beginning when you have lots of luck, which you can sell for high profit.

Beat the game, lads. I feel like I probably should’ve stuck with neutral after Lucifer basically revealed hes no better than God in the ending but whatever, I didn’t want to fight twice as many bosses. I recruited the Lord of the Flies while I was at it which made the end game stretch of archangels a real cakewalk. That being said, the Cathedral was a nightmare to get through, but it’s done. I had fun. It was frustrating, had filler and some really annoying segments but it was still a compelling story with some quality fights. I’ll give it a 7. This might be an unpopular opinion, but imo 2 is the worst of the SNES games, including Kyuuyaku. It feels like so much of that game is just running back and forth to talk to NPC's, retreading the same areas over and over and over again. I lost track of how many times I had to try to remember where the 1 specific NPC I talked to 4 days ago was in order to progress the game, it's seriously so much filler. The game doesn't really pick up until you finally enter the main area of the Expanse, and by then it's almost over. The story was cool I guess, but it didn't really make up for the awful running back and forth, and imo the first game's story was better anyway.

This might be another unpopular opinion, but SMT If was actually my favorite of the SNES games. I really liked the way that game was structured, with the hub world and the different levels you accessed directly from it - it meant that there was no giant world map you had to find your way around, you could just go right from one level to the next. I also liked the dungeons themselves (except for THAT one) because they all had their own gimmick, which made each one feel unique and memorable, and I also liked how the later dungeons felt more puzzle-oriented than the ones in 1 and 2. I also appreciated the pretty barebones story, there really aren't any long story segments and the game makes up for it by having what I felt was very strong atmosphere, it really activates your imagination and just lets it run wild, or at least it did in my case. Overall I like how much more gameplay-focused If felt compared to 2, it actually reminded me of DDS Megami Tensei 1 in that regard.

Of course, I can't talk about If without mentioning it's huge, huge, HUGE flaw, the World of Sloth, which might be the worst dungeon in any video game I've ever played. If you can stomach that though, I promise the rest of the game is worth it if you're really into the dungeon crawling aspects of SMT.

Aside from looking positively ghastly, it’s extremely slow, clunky, glitchy and boring. It basically killed the Majin Tensei sub series so hard that there were new games on it for a decade where it got two shoddy mobile phone games before going completely dorment. As someone said above, when they first released the demo back in 97 or whenever, the reception was so bad that people mass cancelled their preorders and the game sold really poorly as a result. It was made by the company that did the Last Bible games and later the Demi-Kids series but those were handheld games and very scaled back and small. Ronde was already running on a system that is notoriously hard to program for, so it was already going to be in a bad spot, but the hideous art and brain rotting gameplay was the last nail in the coffin

Pointless because in every crpg there's only a couple of OP builds and the rest are impossible to beat the game with.

Game devs never got character customization right, FF did it the best with jobs and materia systems.

Jesus Christ this is exhausting. I’m in the ark now and it’s really gonna make me fight 5 super bosses and trek back and forth just to heal? I swear the sword I’ve got is useless. It’s that one you get from the sealed cave after you gather all the body parts. It does crazy damage for the first two or three rounds and then it dishes out chip damage even if I spam buffers. Are the bosses just doing some magic bullshit that I’m not seeing or does the sword loose power after a few turns?

>> No.8379965

Well, 2 is finished. I feel like I just crawled across broken glass with my fly down. even with save states that was painful. YHVH wasn’t even that difficult, he was just a massive hit sponge. Satan was harder given how he was spamming Mudos and other Insta kill attacks like there was no tomorrow. All in all, I enjoyed that a lot less than 1. 1 was frustrating and tedious, but this just cranked up everything I didn’t like about the first one to ridiculous degrees. The weird ‘you have to find weapon pickups’ instead of being able to buy them was one thing, but the backtracking was really out of control here and I found myself bored to tears half the time, fighting bosses with absurd HP that take 30 minutes or more to kill. The game was just throwing dozens of bosses at me one at a time, and half of them went down like nothing with taru spam so it all felt like annoying filler. The plot was pretty cool even if it started getting incoherent near the end with the dragon that suddnely gets introduced to blow up the world or whatever. Anyway it’s done. I really don’t have the strength for anymore SMT at the moment so I’m gonna wait before I decide to play If… or the Majin games

>> No.8381263

Don't play ...If yet. If you do you will get filtered into oblivion. Go play Digital Devil Saga or Strange Journey. Nocturne may very well filter you into oblivion as well, so hold off on that until you clear DDS. (Make sure to play PS2 nocturne, because the remaster broke the difficulty by removing random skill inheritance.)

>> No.8383368

>>8383271
Last Bible on game gear is a grind fest but you can tear through it in about 8 hours. Game Gear version is the way to go. It’s got better graphics, (debatably) better music and a whole new final boss and ending which really cranks up the stakes from generic medieval RPG into galaxy ending stakes and villains waxing philosophical before you fight the universal will itself. It’s pretty forgiving too. You can die quite easily but you can save wherever you want and if you die you get sent back to the latest inn with a slap on the wrist.

Majin Tensei is a pretty good game. It plays like a poor man’s Fire Emblem but you can summon demons and shit which makes it automatically cooler. It’s pretty exhausting though. The music is fucking great though. Play Ronde if you want a good laugh (it’s not translated though)

>> No.8384091

>>8383220
Don’t even bother with the Famicom versions of Megami Tensei unless you’re hardcore as fuck. Kyuuyaku makes things significantly more bearable. Last Bible is a fun, simple, short RPG you can easily breeze through. Majin Tensei is a decent strat game. I’d say go for Kyuuyaku first but if you want a good chance of pace, Majin is the way to go
