God damn this sucks. Using anything other than zsnes fucks up the sound so horribly. Why do romhackers do this? It kills any chance to play the hacks on real hardware or at least on retroarch or wii emulators.

people say zsnes is accurate enough even though it has so many ugly workarounds to make things work. if that is what a lot of people use, it's likely that romhackers use it too and don't even notice that it doesn't work properly. or maybe these workarounds make it easier? not sure.

Personally, I love the really shitty romhacks. I love a good trainwreck, and boy, are there a lot of them.

SMW's romhack catalog is particularly rife because of the extremely low barrier of entry due to the extremely simple and powerful editing tools. Not only that, but SMWCentral (the biggest SMW hacking site) got hit HARD by the brony plague, so a lot of untalented autists have flocked to the site.

>SMW's romhack catalog is particularly rife because of the extremely low barrier of entry due to the extremely simple and powerful editing tools

For the record, this is also the real reason so many SMW hacks are ZSNES-only. One of the click-and-drool SMW editing tools does something to the ROM that works fine in ZSNES but screws up real hardware and accurate emulators, so literally all hacks created using that tool end up being ZSNES-only.

The SMW romhackers didn't realize for a long time that the tool they used to hack the music did echoing wrong. The result was the hacks would only work properly in ZSNES and not on anything else. >there will never be an MM hack with unique bosses and music
>all the talent for the graphics, design, and music flock over to the easy program tools
>meanwhile the ones that try to be unique all suffer from programmer graphics

Is it too difficult for an autist-level hacker to ask for graphics and music from other people? Is it too hard for them to consider that, and think that an impressive ROM hack would deter their fame that they'd get from a 2 month fangame? Anyone can make a Megaman fangame, only the Japanese can hack the original MM games apparently.

Unless, well, all items starts unidentified in Monster Tower.

It IS Possible to do more than what people do, albeit with slightly more programming prowess.

Majority of romhacks just change game text, enable legendaries as wild/wandering, change the starters, increase shiny appearance rates, shit that doesn't really mean hacking.

It's the equivalent of using the Gameshark/GameGenie/PAR really. There's nothing wholly unique about any romhacks. Some have certain events changed and locations modified but in terms of a legitimate, new type of game RPG, there just isn't a patient enough community to do it, or they just don't have the technical skill.

Basically what it looks like. Game will be relatively unchanged, you start as an alliance captain before Shepard, but after the first contact war, and go exploring. Races will be changed for Mass Effect races (when I eventually find their portrait graphics...) and story text will be changed, so that the supernovas spreading across the galaxy become systems going dark after reaper attacks. Game ends just after the reaper war, may have to hack to shorten it a bit. Very much a WIP, but it is slowly getting somewhere. Would you like to know more?

Have you guys heard of this lost FF5 romhack called 'Dead Bartz'? They say it's been completely wiped off the internet but others say its still around.

For those who don't know about it, Dead Bartz was a romhack for the SNES version of FF5. It popped up on Final Fantasy fan sites shortly after the PSX re-release of Final Fantasy V and VI. While it converted the game into English using RPGe's fantranslated script, Dead Bartz's big feature was the incapacitation of one of the hero's. After Galuf and Lenna join the hero party, players would notice- by the first battle or by checking the menu- that Bartz had been mysteriously KO'd. Phoenix Downs, Life, and every hero-raising ability are ineffective in reviving him. The player has to go through the whole game with only three party members.

And, uh, that's pretty much it. Having to cope with one less hero made the romhack challenging, especially during the parts where the player is forced to use an unusual amount of party members (like when the player first arrives in World 3 and Fork Tower).

For what game ?

It's a complicated process, you need to know at least MIPS assembly language. This is what PSX games are compiled into from C language.
Next, with PSX debugger put a breakpoint memory write on the enemy HP.

Next time you see the enemy again, the debugger should put you in the pre battle preparation modules.

Trace it and find out the table where the game loads the HP and stats.

Next is to modify the table in file.
If the game isn't compressed, you should look at the hex pattern that you find in the HP and stats table.

Pic related. This is what MIPS assembly looks like.
You don't see c = a + b

What you see :
lui $at, 0x1001 # get a
lw $t0, 0($at)
nop
lui $at, 0x1001 # get b
lw $t1, 4($at)
nop
addu $t2, $t0, $t1 # c = a + b

If you don't know anything about MIPS, I'd recommend you to learn it from :
http://programmedlessons.org/AssemblyTutorial/index.html

It would be helpful if you know at least C programming language before jumping to Assembly.

Not that anon, but by any chance would you know why I get a weird color bleed effect when opening NES roms in programs designed for altering NES roms like Tile Layer Pro, Tile Molester, TileEd2002, YY CHR, etc?

I'm trying to map out the Castlevania ROM since Stake has some limitations as well as some bugs that make editing a pain in the ass, so much so that graphical editing is borderline impossible without a different program and a hex editor. The problem is most noticeable when you are looking at the graphics for the title screen in game/Stake and in one of the editors at the same time. The color bleed makes it appear as if multiple tiles are stacked ontop of each other to create the finished tile.

Is there any way to fix this, some setting I've missed? Or do most programs just not interpret Castlevania's graphics properly?

Sounds like the graphics in that game are compressed. If a ROM has fairly basic graphic compression, when you open it in a tile editor you'll see semi-recognizable graphics that appear to be overlaid or squashed together. If the compression is more advanced, you won't see any recognizable graphics at all.

Me again. I'm not entirely sure the graphics are compressed at this point, but how the data is offset on the ROM. I found some tool for NES development called 8TED or somesuch, which allowed me to shift the offset by single bytes rather than by line. Offsetting everything by 8 bytes made the graphics look exactly as they do in-game, where-as the default offset looked just like it did in the other graphical editing tools. Given that I have no idea how to force TLP or TM to shift offset by bytes, I'm thinking the best course of action would be to cut the first 8 bytes of data past the header out, so I can actually alter things 1:1 with the way they look in the game.

It ain't much, but it's progress.

pSX

PCSX

pSX 1.13 is pretty good at everything, except assembling PSX instructions on the fly and silly register names (r16 instead of $s0, r8 instead of $t0) - Someone with x86 asm knowledge should hack this.

No$PSX can assemble PSX instruction on the fly and has sane register name, but its memory breakpoint is buggy and you can't change the register value (major turn off).

PCSX 1.5 with Debugger / Agemo, the only good thing about this debugger is that it's open source.
Horrible interface

Stick with No$PSX / pSX 1.13, switch between these two programs as you need.

I absolutely adore how this author did the entirety of Crateria, Tourian, and the first bits of Brinstar.
You really get that feeling of familiarity to Super Metroid's original layout and I maintain that this is how the real Zero Mission should have done it.

Basically during the escape from Tourian, shit happens and you break out of the elevator directly into a section of New Tourian, still under construction at this point, and escape through there. You rush through sections of Crateria that you used in Super Metroid to travel to New Brinstar before escaping.

And then if you go back to the destroyed Tourian after.. Let's just say there's more fun to be had.

Super Metroid Legacy - Highest quality SM hack from a simpler age in hacking
Super Metroid Limit - another high quality SM hack from a simpler time
Super Metroid Z-Factor - newer hack, I still haven't finished it but am stuck in Maridia and have quite enjoyed what I have played

Super Metroid Redesign - the best of them all, but also by far the hardest (not to the level of frustration-tier design though); substantially overhauls some play mechanics and not recommended for people new to SM hacks or aren't already Super Metroid experts
