the early revisions were made that way if you were good. It was a mistake on their part that gauntlet proved too easy from the start, hence the numerous revisions to make the game more and more unfair and quarter--grinding.

My curiosity is, has there ever been an effort by gauntlet fanatics to determine which gauntlet revision is the best mix of difficulty and fairness?
