yeah, i almost couldn't believe it when i heard the SNES could handle better graphics. Sonic to me will always be the pinnacle of this gen to me. even when I had a PSX and an N64 as a kid I was jealous of my cousins who had a Genesis because Sonic looked so damn slick on it.

yes, I feel it gets overlooked a lot. Sonic put together a very cohesive, whole style that felt iconic and different from rest. not that many other platformers beside Mario managed this. Rare only had googly eyes on everything, but you hardly could call a game level distinctively DKC or Banjo. Crash tried, but was way too generic. perhaps EWJ could reach that amount of style, but it was too style over substance. Megaman perhaps was close due to enemy designs, not levels though, and even that got kinda fucked in X (not a jab at X but it went more in the way of sci-fi robot anime and lost its unique edge).
