Why is MGS so revered? I've played about 8 hours of it and the only redeeming quality are the cutscenes, which still kind of suck because of the hardware limitations. The combat is flat out dumb. It's 100% luck to the point where it's almost game breaking.
Someone convince me to finish this game please.

>> No.834796

if that's your approach then you really shouldn't bother continuing. The gameplay is (wait for it) solid...combat is fine but if you suck at it (i dont see how) you should remember this IS a stealth game...you're meant to avoid combat as best you can. How far in did you get in those 8 hours? I think it might be safe to say its just not for you

>> No.834803

i think some people try too hard to not like things

this happens more often the older you get

My main complaints are the boss fights (Wolf's second one in particular) and the forced fights like the elevator after the helicopter dude fight and the elevator after sniper wolf.

>The combat is flat out dumb. It's 100% luck to the point where it's almost game breaking.

Wut? There's almost nothing in this game that's luck based.

>It's 100% luck to the point where it's almost game breaking.

Wait, what do you mean? Assuming you aren't on the harder difficulties where you have no radar, you have that to help you spot enemies. Even if you are on a harder difficulty, you have the first person view. I've never had a problem with them but some say the combat controls feel a little clunky at times, but this is to make stealth the focus of the game instead of running in doom style and blowing everyone to bits.

But hey if you don't like it bro don't play it, opinions and such.

I know this could well be bait but I just had to be sure /vr/.

>> No.834890

Luck based? What? I agree that the combat is a bit clunky at first, but there's basically no element of luck in it. How is it luck based?

That said the torture scene is kind of pissing me off. I can't seem to mash fast enough to get past it on my PSP and no way in hell am I giving in. The 'lol no continues' shit really doesn't help, it's the one piece of meta in MGS that I can safely qualify as stupid and obnoxious.

You can fail the torture scene and still continue playing, I think it just gives you the non-canon ending

To get past the ones in peace walker I used a marker and quickly swiped it across the button. Peace walker has many button mashing sequences that you need to do to even progress the game.

You can probably look up "MGS pen trick" or something and find more info

OP, I played through them all last year and didn't have issues personally. I even played quite a bit of MGS3 before just playing them in release order.

>> No.834948

>Why is MGS so revered?
Great mood, story, characters, and music, tense stealth, memorable boss fights.

Combat is competent, despite it being far from the focus, but aside from taking out goons with the suppressed SOCOM, or forced sections, you'd be better off just dying/continuing if you get in a firefight.
If you're hopeless at stealth and have to fight, you should maybe go through the VR missions to get used to the auto-aim, and the different way each weapon handles.
If the story hasn't hooked you, you're bad at stealth, and you can't get over the combat hump, just pack it in and play something else. Don't force yourself to do something you don't enjoy, just because other people do.

Eh, I guess I might have to... I wish there was something that'd just let me autofire on the PSP but that seems unlikely to exist.

>> No.834961

Surprised they don't let you. Sony should really update the PS1 emulation on PS3/PSP to let you choose that.

You don't know what luck means, and you're bad at video games. Don't blame the game when you don't understand it.

No. Anyone that uses autofire is the epitome of casual and deserves no legitimacy.

It's all about spasming your finger on the button. You have to physically exert yourself, just like Snake does.

I really enjoyed MGS1, but all of the actual gameplay parts just felt awkward to me. I have always felt like the controls in the games are terrible.

Saw this on a stream last week. If you're using a gamepad, you have to switch to the keyboard.
If you're keyboard though? No idea, maybe alternate keybinds, or it goes down the shoot the statues route.

You don't want to get the stealth camo? Also I've been putting this off for years but I need to make a video showing how to hit the button super fast. It's awkward to describ in text. But put your left thumb on the button and use your right hand to move the controller/psp. You'll never have less than full health again. Also you can regain health after the torture stops by continuing to mash. That may help.

>> No.840762

Ok Anon I made a video of proper button mashing technique. This will get you through those torture sequences no sweat.

What? Wolf and the Hind D boss fights were great. But I agree with you that the elevator fights were shit, and so was running up several flights of stairs while guards shot at you.
