Can the original Alone in the Dark really be enjoyed today? I'm in my 30s and grew up with bad 3D, but holy hell this just looks so goofy that I can't imagine taking it seriously as any sort of horror game.

The original Alone in the Dark gave me nightmares, especially getting to the Cthonian monster in the tunnels.

It's legitimate low poly early 3D not the meme "low poly" where they show PlayStation 1 or NDS games. It's the 3D equivalent of Atari graphics vs Resident Evil which would be like 16 bit 2D. It's very crude, low detail.

I wonder if the devs even intended the game to be actually scary instead of just being an adventure game with horror elements . The sequels definitely feel like the latter.

I think it can. The only thing that can block you is the graphics. That's not trivial, graphics can ruin games for folk, it happens all the time. It's not a technology thing as much as it is a style think.
But it's got really valuable stuff:
>Interesting lore that reveals itself throughout the game.
>Atmospheric environment
>Quality soundtrack with ghoulish sounds
>Interesting puzzles
All the stuff needed for a good adventure game then or now.

It's almost as scary as Silent Hill, from my experience. I played it without music. Sounds of footsteps, doors creaking open, and grotesque looking enemies silently really made the whole experience. The diary entries were legitimately scary too. AitD 2 was the goofier game, but still creepy in my opinion.

> The sequels definitely feel like the latter.

The sequels are more action oriented and it's the reason why the creator left the series after the first game

It was goofy in its day too. With the lady unarmed, her kicks were hilarious to me, and I used it on those enemies. What makes the game stand out well to me is the general vibe, setting, and mystery.

Something about the surreal quality of those models and colours does have a creepy quality to me. Almost like a giallo film. It's not going to make anyone shit themselves though.

If anything the aesthetic is the least poorly aged thing about the game.

As pioneeristic as it is, this game should be considered a paradigm by those techno-primitivists who see in machine limitations the soul of a game. But despite its many fans, it's considered a good game at best, and this is because the soul rethoricists, despite their pontifications, can't go back further than the 32 bit era to appreciate 3D gaming.

No, I wish I were, getting old sucks. The first 3D horror game I played was RE, and that had at least reached the point where the 3D zombies actually looked like somewhat unsettling zombies and not a 1st year 3D art student's first month project.
>>8343702
That's probably a good way to put it. Based on the cover art, I'm guessing they wanted it to be somewhat scary, which if so, they probably should've used 2D. Clock Tower was 2D horror and absolutely captured an unsettling horror vibe (and to put it on a more even playing field in terms of platform and release time, Dark Seed did so as well).

Should Capcom publicly apologise for how much they stole from this game?

No because they did it better. It's not a rip-off if you improve on it.

Yeah, and it's not like it was a secret or anything either. The consensus at the time was basically "It's like Alone in the Dark, but actually fun."

I know this will trigger some zooms, but i like Alone in the dark 1 and 2 more then Resident Evil 1. It has a kind of rpg-like nuances to how you approach enemies and use items that i like.

Alone in the dark has better puzzles, lore, atmosphere, and hand to hand combat.

Also early 20th century USA setting is infinitely more interesting than some carpenter ripoff.
