You are both underestimating Sonic's "relevance" today and underestimating how big Mario was back in the day. I work retail and we sell more fortnite and call of duty shit to kids than we do Mario & Sonic we don't even have zelda or donkey kong or Crash Bandicoot items, most people who want that stuff are 30-somethings trying to pass their nostalgia onto their kids. Little bitty kids want Mario & Sonic but the majority want fortnite.
Imagine in 1993 a kid asks for DOOM pajamas instead of Mario. Well kids literally want fortnite shit today over the heroes of our childhoods.

The first Sonic movie was actually a hit at the box office. Not sure about the state of cinemas, but I have a feeling that the second movie will do really well on whatever streaming platform it ends up on.

The EWJ reference is because the first EWJ had a jab at DKC (there's a cheatcode that lets you get a DK head with an arrow across his head or something like that).
Still, even though I think it's silly that Rare lowered themselves to these silly beefs, that render of the Sonic shoes and the EWJ gun are nice.
