Recently I found an old MegaDrive (Genesis in YankSpeak) model 2 and I only had a couple RF adapters for it, so i tried connecting it to an old CRT (a late 90's/early 2000s Toshiba unit) and I just couldn't get a signal out of it except for a brief , faint greyscale displaying of the "This product is manufactured under license from Sega Enterprises" intro screen on a game (I have ordered a RGB Scart cable for the Model 2).

I experienced the same issue trying to get a Model 1 system also using RF with a different TV with even less luck, only being able to interrupt the TV static with a black screen.

I also remember having a similar issue with a PsOne I bought a good few years ago, except that I luckily had a composite cable that came with my PS3 that was compatible with it.

Has anybody else been having similar issues with getting RF to work and has any ideas why?

Could it have anything to do with the shutdown of Analogue TV stations (Where I live, Analogue Broadcasts have been off the air for nearly 10 years now) and/or interreference from the former spectrums used for UHF now being reused for Digital TV and other stuff?

RF is trash it was trash when it was new.
Composite Component or GTFO.

I use RF for all my stuff that couldnt do better without physical modification. Its either:
-The wire you are using is either shitty or got fucked
-you need to make sure all your connections are on tight enough
-fuck around with the cords position, move it around, sometimes just the way its bent or bunched up will make the signal shit. Also depending on your TV, if its an old dial style knob, sometimes you gotta fiddle with that and barely turn it until image clears up.

I emulate using a VGA to component transcoder at 240p not my problem.

I know its shit.

I was just trying to get a signal out to see if the system worked and was only going to use it temporarily anyways until the new cables arrive.

With that being said, some have argued that you should be using composite for MegaDrive/Genesis games because of how it used composite's terrible signal quality along with dithering to make a transparency effect because its what the devs intended, though I don't really care about that (maybe its because I'm more familiar with the pixel-perfect outputs from every emulator from Gens, to Kega Fusion and PicoDrive)

At least I'm lucky enough to live in Europe, meaning that almost everything supports RGB over Scart, but then again, I also have to suffer with 50Hz because everybody making games during the 80's and 90's all collectively "Fuck Europe" said by TV manufacturers forcing us to be stuck with 50hz until the mid 2000's and devs not adjusting for then lower refresh rate of the PAL and SECAM standards.

Back in the days I used RF on my nes, ps1 and even ps2 and while it sucked, it was useable enough and as a kid it never bothered me. Few years ago I tried to plug in mega drive 2 to the old shitty tv I used to have as a kid via rf(pic related), and it wasn't that bad even, the contrast is super low but thats just the tv itself, and to me when playing nes games the super low contrast makes me nostalgic than how its supposed to look like.

Maybe your cables are frayed inside.
Dig up an RCA cable (any will do) and order a RCA female to Coaxial F-type male adapter, see pic.

Could possibly be the noobest mistake of all: you're on the wrong channel. I've had some TVs which had a good RF signal in channel 7 or 9 for example

Most of Europe doesn't use the F-type connector (except for some cable TV stuff that I've never seen because Satellite is more common where I live) for OTA television. I dunno why I find it so annoying when Yanks assume that we all use the same names, connectors and etc for stuff, though to be fair, I think most countries use the F-connector.

Most stuff here uses Belling-Lee/IEC connectors (pic-related), and I dunno if I could get such an adapter, and I doubt that it would work since every adapter I've got has the cable that actually plugs into the TV hardwired in, and the only female connector is the one where you attach the antenna to the RF box which was to allow you to use the console whilst still being able to access TV channels when they were still up without using a switch or manually disconnecting it. My Model 1 adapter has the same setup except that it has a switch between Console and TV mode, whereas the only setting on the Model 2 adapters is for choosing between the PAL-I and PAL-G Variants, (with I for the UK and Ireland, and I think G for Scandinavia, though I might be wrong), so having a different cable between the RF adapter and the TV won't do much. If the cables are frayed inside, I would have to open-up the adaptor's casing, remove the old frayed output cable and solder in a new one, which is way too much hassle for such low picture quality.

Like I said earlier, I was only planning to be using RF temporarily until the SCART Cable I ordered arrives, though I might consider your suggestion for future consoles I buy (assuming that any of the charity shops nearby have anything vidya-game related other than mostly outdated sports games and the same handful of PS3 and X360 titles that everybody's forgotten about (though I've been considering buying a SNES out of Cashies and I dunno what cable it comes with).

Trust me, I tried. I remember going through every channel with no luck, but I might try again if I have time to soon.

OP here (but I accidentally closed the incognito window, and I unfortunately can't prove it), it might be to do with the channel tuning.

I did manage to get a janky setup working where I have the MegaDrive connected to the aerial input of an old Grundig VCR I had lying around and had it output to the TV over SCART. At first it didn't work until I found the channel tuning menu on the VCR and I was able to tune to the exact channel that the MegaDrive was outputting out of, which for some reason was Channel 32 (still set to PAL-I). It's not an ideal setup because the VCR turns off after about 5-ish minutes , but I was able to get a reliable colour picture and sound output.

I might try doing the same with the TV itself, setting it up so that the one of the channels (probably 7) is tuned into the MegaDrive's output, but I don't want to risk removing the Channel Names the TV had stored (because nostalgia)

I can't believe I used it as a kid. I kinda was stuck with it but christ. I tried using my old small CRT I had that only has RF and it was unplayable
