RR64 has analog control and wheel support. World Driver Championship is one of the most disapointing games I've ever tried, as I was hoping for Gran Turismo on the N64 with fewer cars. Honestly, something about RRV''s handling feels really weird to me and I can't get how people rate it so highly. This list is in order from best to worst:

R4 is at the top just by virtue of having both the most stuff (8 courses, run both forward and backward), the best graphics by a country mile, and it even plays really well, even the drifts aren't as fun and wacky as in RR1 or RRR.
The music is cool and smooth, it's a whole fucking package.

Ridge Racer Revolution would be absolutely ideal if it had more than 3 courses.
The visuals are stylish in their own way, very bright and tropical and fully saturated. The handling model is more fun than the original RR game.
I fucking love the soundtrack, but I'd forgive people for thinking that it's a bit much (but like, zipping around the course with Rotterdam Nation 94 slamming on the speakers is perfect).
It's the /vr/-era RR game I play the most, even if I understand it's not the best.

Rave Racer is odd. I like it, but something doesn't quite click with me when playing it.
Also, FUCK the announcers, holy shit. I really need to look into seeing if I can just zero out those voice clips in the sample ROMs, fucking hell.
It has the two original RR1 courses, and then two original ones that are pretty decent. Music is good.

Rage Racer is really cool, but like, drifting is basically 100% nonsense in it.
This would be fine and I'll just drive without doing it, except sometimes, it seems like I'll lose traction for no apparent reason, and then Rage's baffling drifting mechanics kick in.
The courses are long and hilly and I love them. The oval is fun when dodging other cars, it's lame in time attack.

The original Ridge Racer is neat, but it only has two courses, which was fucking dumb back in when the arcade game came out, let alone in the intervening year and a bit when the game was first released on PS1.
The bonus disc version included with R4 is fun and seems to have changed a few minor things mechanically regarding handling, but you can't race with a full grid anymore because 60fps.
The music is similar to RRR, but like, it's not as good (apart from the default Ridge Racer theme song, which is amazing).
The best /vr/-era way to play the original RR tracks is Ridge Racer 2 arcade, and you even get the better music that got used in RRR.

Something always felt absurdly off about RR5, so I never was able to get into it at all.
I also think it's deeply unstylish and I don't like the music.
I can't actually rate it fairly, so I'm excluding it from the ranking.

Rage Racer drifting is the same as RRR, except you have to downshift on exit to rocket propel in the same way as RRR does automatically. It's fun once you get a hang of it.
Coming from Rage Racer, R4 kind of disappointed me. Career mode is just a short linear progression through eight tracks with some VN style cutscenes added inbetween the races. You don't revisit earlier tracks with late game cars. Tracks themselves are very flat and less detailed than in Rage Racer. Less pronounced sense of speed. Manual transmission is useless because you don't need to downshift ever. Grip cars can't do drifts at all and are not fun to use. Upgraded versions of the same car look the same but are counted as different cars for some reason. In Rage Racer car upgrades change their look too which is a nice detail.
BTW, you may select original RR tracks in RRR via a gameshark code, but it's only time trial versus one opponent.

First GP in Rage Racer has laughably slow cars though, like idk what they were thinking, but later GPs are very fast and tough as nails.
Revolution feels great straight away.
Prepare to struggle with drifts in both, they're are harder to nail perfectly compared to R4 and your car can actually spin out.
Automatic transmission in Rage Racer is useless, you will stall a lot.

Mate, it's literally "press button at the right time" which takes no skill once you memorize the tracks. No wonder why RRT4 doesn't let you race on the same track twice in Grand Prix mode. Ridge Racer drifting is a joke in general, but at least other RR games require you to straighten the car.

The 320 cars thing is that Namco lied about them being actual cars. It's actually 40 cars, and 280 unlockable paintjobs (including the 4 teams' painjobs for each car). If you unlock one car, you already have it, you just don't have all the liveries for it, which they counted as a "car" in itself. That's a lie indeed, but in terms of modelling, all RRT4 cars all look different.

car unlocks are determined by podium positions. so there's three cards you unlock for coming first in the first seven stages of the grand prix, then there's three different cars you get if you finish second in every race of the first two stages etc. So you have to finish repeatedly with every combination of podium positions with each manufacturer and with each team to unlock all 320 cars.

I prefer Rage Racer over R4, but it's too different from R4 so I doubt you'll enjoy it as much if you've started with R4. Rage Racer picks up the speed only by third GP and after that it becomes really sweaty and challenging. Also it is a game focused on using manual transmission, drifts are used only when really necessary.
If you want to have fast mindless drifting right away, try Ridge Racer 7 instead. It runs flawlessly on RPCS3
