I know crt is best but is it worth gaming on a projector at all?

Id say its worth playing on a rear projection TV. Because it's how all my games looked as a kid and so it's the best possible way a game could ever look. Dont know shit about projectors though. Thanks for reading my blog. I hope somebody answers your question.

Yes. I play on a short throw NEC. My input lag is between 20-30ms depending on the settings. I have almost everything worth collecting (Famicom, Mega Drive, Super Famicom, PS2, Wii, PS3, Wii U, PS4 etc.).
Anything specific you wanna know anon?

I'm running a NEC UM361X.
Mainly because it was like 100$ but also because there are very few 4:3 LCD projectors. I dislike DLP a lot. I dislike laser/LED projectors too.
But I have to say Hitachi>>>NEC. I still miss my old Hitachi ED-A101 that thing had about 10-15ms of input lag and was funky as hell. But getting a decent Hitachi these days is almost impossible.

If I wasn't constrained by UST I would go for a Hitachi CP-SX635 because 1400x1050 is based resolution. Or Sony VPL-FE40 if you are a fan. Which I'm not.

My setup consists of a level 5 wall coated with special paint which gives me about 120" picture and I sit about 20 feet away. Everything is plugged in through cheap AliExpress switchboxes. Digital audio capable systems goes through a SMSL DAC because my vintage JVC amp has only analog inputs.
The photos are from a year ago but you get the idea.

input lag is the delay between you pressing a button and seeing something change
funnily enough if you sit 3m away that gives 10ns of lag or 0.000010006923ms if the projector is above your head that doubles the lag making it a whopping 20ns!
so yes it does impact input lag
better play on CRT with you face pressed against it!

Been willing to get one for racing sims and watching movies.
For retro gaming, forget about it. The average projector rig can add you up to 100-200ms input lag, so anything that was originally played at 0ms on a crt will be downright unplayable.
There ARE gaming projectors with reduced input lag but they cost trillions, to the point where you're better off getting an 80" tv anyway (way better image)

You are thinking of the DLP early HD era that is like that. It is all the post processing and scaling shit that makes them terrible. It's why late PS2 and early PS3 games sometimes had built in lag calibration (notably rythym games). When hooked to a PC the mouse was floaty and imprecise from the lag.

CRT or decent presentation projectors don't have these issues. You get the ~15ms that comes from being a 60hz display and that is a non issue.

>> No.8321342

I feel like projectors are just a novelty setup as opposed to a practical one. You can get a 55''+ modern TV that will be large like a projector, have infinitely deep blacks, and rich colours. That's on top of having the same input lag as a CRT if it's in 120hz mode.

Maybe. But I've been running projectors as my main display for almost 8 years now. And let me tell you nothing beats the fact that you don't have to have a HUGE black rectangle on your wall at all times. Plus 55" sure is possible, even bigger TVs are possible but once you start approaching that 70" mark thing begin to be expensive (mainly because shipping a 100" TV is extremely expensive). And for me. With 120" 4:3 image. There is simply no alternative. And probably never will be.

TL:DR 4 player games like Mario Party on 120" 4:3 screen are the most wonderful experience

I have one of these. Not sure on the exact model, but it's pretty much this. I have the giant remote for it. I've had it hooked up. Played Arkham Asylum and watched a few movies on it when I bought it years and years ago for 400 bucks. It needs a new green tube. I should have gotten a new one for it by now, but I haven't had the room to have it hooked up for years. This thing is almost the size of a Lazy Boy Recliner and weighs at least twice as much. You're supposed to have these things mounted on the ceiling, but you'd need a crew to accomplish such a thing. It's a shame I haven't done more with it.

Somebody's pic of this thing set up in a weird way. I didn't need to have it jacked up like this. I found an old steel cart that was the bottom half of one of those giant office copier machines. And use that as a stand for the projector since it has really robust wheels that lock on it.
When I bought my projector it came with an old NEC Line Doubler and a pretty big screen that attached to an aluminum frame. Pretty good deal. Just a shame the projector weighs so f'n much and needs so much f'n space. The room it's in would work great, but I don't live with my parents anymore. Still might get it set back up in there anyway and start looking for a new green tube for it. It works, but you can tell the center of the screen is a bit dark when green is heavily used.

Hmm... I guess the fan did get somewhat loud, but then again it was right next to our heads. These things are meant to go up on a ceiling and I don't believe you'd hear it from up there. You could always replace the fan with something modern if you wanted to.
