What is it about their retro games that people go so nuts about? The aftermarket of their marquee games are usually higher than the competition. They make good games but I don't think they're better than Sega, Sony, etc's games.

You seem to be simply talking about Nintendo in general? Because of the image you chose, people will think this is a N64 thread.

Nintendo is a cult and the people obsessed with them have very little if any at all experience with the medium outside of their products. You can see the same retardation and brand worship with Apple products, Disney movies or the millions of retards who never played a PC game before Steam.
You see less of this with the other companies because they targeted and appealed to an older, more socially intelligent, and less impressionable audience.

nintendo was always really good at trying to appeal to as many people as humanly possible, with a heavy focus on marketing and merchandizing at children
if you can get the 90s kids wearing fucking mario and luigi on their underwear when theyre 5, then the battle of the future has already been "won"
people will always be more fond of what they had as a child
same reason ZX spectrum threads exist

real nostalgia aside, theres also the idea of "retrospective nostalgia" which nintendo is also very good at inspiring in its new consoomers. to put it simply: they play it safe. they take their popular characters/IPs and wring them dry over the course of decades, so that no matter what, there will ALWAYS be a new mario comin out. thus they will always have a new generation of kids who grew up on their IPs. many times these kids will then play re-releases of older games in a series they like, and enjoy the second-hand nostalgia in seeing where it all came from
pretty silly, but it is what it is
at least theyre bothering to play older games i guess

all that said i tend to agree. most of the NES and SNESs best games were 3rd-party. sega, imo, had much better 1st party titles in the 80s and 90s. hell, space harrier alone is a much better game than like 80% of nintendos 1st party titles imo
the problem outside of the whole corp goin tits up was that their games werent always marketable at young children. they absolutely raked it in with the older/teenage gamers of the time, but not having a constant stream of young kids that they indoctrinated at an early age, nintendo was able to win out in the long run

Are you talking about the n64? Because if so, I saw somebody on here once say the reason the n64 is so beloved despite its small library is because the kids who grew up with it (who were mostly kids who got it due to the success of the SNES) found a common ground on the small number of good games for the system. Meanwhile the PS1's library was so vast and expansive nearly every single kid who grew up with that console had a very different experience from one another.

If you're just talking about nintendo in general, its because most of their products were high quality through the era and offered worthwhile competition. Also it could be because they're still around today putting out good titles making use of their iconic IPs, meanwhile Sega pretty much only has sonic left who is nearly on life support and Sony is an absolute shell of its former self and doesn't milk its nostalgia as much as nintendo does. When zoomers get into retro games today its mostly because of nintendo and their desire to explore their older catalog.

that could be part of it
i think the biggest thing that the N64 did, that caused so many to love it was its 4-player multiplayer
of that very small list of great games on N64, the lions share of them all had really great multiplayer modes
ime, playing with friends are always some of my fondest memories of playing vidya as a kid, and id imagine im not alone in this

So is Sega. So is Square Enix. So is capcom. So Is konami. So is Namco.

It's more an issue that Sony is really really fucking bad at any form of branding and actively sabotages any IP it gets it's hands on for longer than 2 games.

The rarer Saturn and Ps1 games are worth more than the big N64 games. Same with genesis.

There are two things going on. One is that Nintendo has been very good at implementing intuitive and fun control schemes. They have a rigorous design and play-testing process for their games. In every generation, they've managed to develop games that control better than most of their competitors. Therefore, Nintendo games have "aged" better than most of their contemporaries.
The other thing is that they have been very good at developing branded characters that appeal to small children. Games that are aimed at teenagers tend to be more attuned to passing fashions, and are thus less nostalgic.
N64 came out when I was a teenager, and I just have no interest in it. NES and SNES, though...

Also, many Millennials (especially soiboys) want to recapture their childhoods. Huge numbers of Millennials were never raised with the expectation that they’d one day be adults; part of them still rejects it. So they worship their lost childhoods the same way boomers worship their adolescence/early 20s. And they’ll pay a high price to access that.

Well clearly a lot of people do think that. You don't have to agree but it's a simple concept to understand.
