8309487 No.8309487 [Reply] [Original]

I literally cannot enjoy sixth gen consoles because the emulation is just not mature enough. Every fucking microstutter, audio crackle, or visual inaccuracy just pisses me off and makes the game unplayable.

Dolphin is supposed to be so great, but even on a high-end PC, even with every fucking setting under the sun, games still crackle between transitions, frame pacing is still absolute garbage, the framerate still drops like a fucking rock with certain actions (e.g. Rogue Squadron, the fps drops to like 5fps every time you go first person), games still crash randomly, and the shader caching is unbearable even loading ahead of time or using ubershaders.

And don't even get me started on the atrocious piece of shit that is PCSX2.

>just play on original hardware!!
I'm not playing with the shitty standard controller, non-rebindable controls, horrible input lag, having to get a bunch of convertors and upscalers and bullshit to play on a modern display, or having none of the features and conveniences of modern emulation.

Is there really just no solution besides to just wait for another at least half a decade for the emulation and technology to improve? Going from the top-tier performance and accuracy of fifth-gen console emulation to sixth-gen is just an absolutely fucking insane nosedive in quality.

>using a CRT removes all input lag
holy shit you can't be this stupid. CRTs are only a few ms faster than modern monitors, and a high-refresh monitor with VRR used with emulation is actually even faster than a CRT because it's not constrained to 60Hz. CRT are around 7-8ms input lag due to how they draw their frames.

Regardless, unless you have some dogshit TV and refuse to enable game mode, the lag from your display accounts for very little of the total input lag.

The Wii U can do everything the Wii can do, plus output HD via HDMI. However if you aren’t using the HDMI (because you are smart enough to run component through Retrorink5x), the Wii U isn’t worth the hassle. The Wii U has to boot into its regular operating system before it boots into the Wii’s operating system. So you have to have the tablet out taking up space in your entertainment center. Not a big deal, but its a consideration. The real problem is that the Wii U doesn’t have gamecube controller ports despite being able to play gamecube games natively. Easier to just use a regular cheap Wii if you arent using the HDMI for HD output.

If you want an enthusiast-grade experience then you need to be able to spend a little bit of money on enthusiast-grade hardware.
That means either getting real hardware and a CRT, or a good quality modern display with features that help with things like frame pacing and stuttering.
These things are not that expensive in the long run. Even a top-tier emulation set-up is very cheap compared to other hobbies.
It's really a question of how far up in your list of interests /vr/ happens to be.

I don’t think lag will be a big deal breaker when a mixture of games run at like 30-60fps on original hardware, the difference is probably negligible by that point.
Either way, if you’re gonna play on 6th gen and accuracy is that much of a concern, you’ll want a cheap CRT for it because the PS2 mostly does not look great upscaled, even with a Retrotink 5x as much as it does its best.

If you can jailbreak a PS4, the PS2 Classics emulator quadruples the internal render resolution according to digital foundry. Though games that you try to add may have emulation issues.
Beyond that, that's as good as it gets. I love upscalers but they can only do so much for the PS2 since most of its library does not run at 480p minimum compared to the Xbox/DC/GC.

If OP is getting inconsistent framerates the problem sounds like it's his set up. Like there are literally settings to lock framerates at 60 I don't see how inconsistent framerates are an issue when it's locked at 60. And crackling audio? Sounds like a problem with his setup again, don't know how sounds streamed from a "disc" are being distorted, the emulator is pretty much playing a wav file or equivalent when it comes to 6th gen hardware there is no soundchip generating those things. I havent ever emulated 6th gen but I have 7 and you would think that would cause more issues but nope, nothing but steady framerates and crisp audio. Not him (and Idk why he's copy pasting my OP), but CRTs are only a few ms faster than modern monitors, and a high-refresh monitor with VRR used with emulation is actually even faster than a CRT because it's not constrained to 60Hz. CRT are around 7-8ms input lag due to how they draw their frames.

Properly setup emulation on a monitor is always lower input lag than native hardware on a CRT.

What plebs still don't seem to grasp is that you can't emulate the Emotion Engine because it's a physical chip. Which is why it's difficult to find a good PS2 emulator, but not difficult to find something that didn't require the chip, say, a good PS3 emulator despite the PS3 being a later generation console.
Even the PS3 required an Emotion Engine chip to play PS2 games. But it became too costly to keep producing them and then there was the push to "dude just buy all of those games you already own on the PS store haha!" and the thick fucking consoomers gobbled it up.
But now you know why only some PS3s are backwards compatible (because they have the EE chip), why some aren't (because they don't have the EE chip), and why spastics keep crying about PS2 emulation without understanding why it's bad and just shutting the fuck up.
