First of all because it just plays well, and also because it's a time capsule of 90s car culture. The -vast- niche JDM car selection, the race mods, the menu design and comfy menu themes, the detailed car settings, the cool tracks, the cool big beat and drum n bass music SPECIFICALLY IN THE PAL VERSION. Granted it's not perfect, the AI is pretty easy to beat actually, but that's nothing you can't fix by imposing additional limits on yourself, and a few other features feel unfinished but it's still fantastic.

Episode 1 Racer is another retro racing favorite of mine though, alongside gems like CMR2.0, V-Rally 2 and TOCA/TOCA 2 (can't recall which of the two was better).

To answer your question, I -think- I generally stuck with Ebe Endocott in Episode 1 Racer. Don't think I even bothered with switching racers mid career. Granted it's not a hugely replayable game and I haven't played it in a bunch of years so my memory might be fading me, but the name and look feel very familiar.

I think I had lost all interest in NFS series with Underground games. >that game was made for N64 and then ported to other systems you mong

>Star Wars Episode I: Racer was developed and published by LucasArts for Windows PCs in April 1999.[6] Development took approximately two years. Two project leads responsible for Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire began initial development once Shadows was completed. The game was developed in-house at LucasArts. Tools used during development included 3D Studio Max, Alias Wavefront and Autodesk Softimage.
>Episode I: Racer was later ported and released for several other platforms: Nintendo 64[12] Dreamcast, and Game Boy Color. The announced PlayStation version of the game was never released.[13] The Nintendo 64 version received a special edition Star Wars Episode I: Racer hardware bundle, including the standard gray and black console and a copy of the game. Though the Nintendo 64 cartridge takes advantage of Nintendo's Expansion Pak memory unit to display additional textures, the limited capacity of the cartridge resulted in the removal of all pre-rendered cutscenes seen on the Windows and Macintosh versions.

I just love how fast you can go, how you can push other racers off the course, how intense the music can be for those high speed moments (looking at you Sand Ocean tunnel), how smooth runs for an N64 game and if you play it on original hardware with a good condition stick, the control is superb.
