VTEC edition

Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread was TOTALED: >8254141

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e (embed)

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

A link/webpage/whatever that explains what to expect from every NFS game on every platform? The same title (undercover, carbon, etc.) seems to be different games depending on the platform.

Rage Racer is the mascot of the thread so if you want to give it a try, here are some tips ver. 2.0:

1. Different cars manufacturers suit different tracks. Mythical Coast has medium elevations and medium turns, Gnade Esperanza is good there. Over Pass city has steep elevations, so it's better to use Lizard cars which have high torque. Lakeside Gate has steep corners - Age cars are the best at cornering. Extreme Oval (actually tri-oval) has neither, so Assoluto cars with their top speed are the best.

2. It is possible to complete the game using cars less suitable for the tracks, but it's harder to do so. Except Oval track and Assoluto. You won't beat rival Assoluto car there without using Assoluto and you will struggle with an Assoluto car on other tracks due to its mediocre cornering and torque.

3. Many seemingly steep turns, like the one after the cobbled road and another one right before the finish line, don't require drifting. Approach them from the outer edge and aim to the inner edge - this is a basic cornering technique in every racing game. Sometimes a little brake tap is also better than drifting.

4. Mastering manual transmission is a must if you want to be faster on ascents/descents and exiting drifts. MT is essential here, unlike other RR games. For the best effect, you may memorize rough maximum speed value for every gear and then downshift to this gear from a higher one once the speed falls below that number. For upshifting make sure to push that rpm needle to the max before switching to the next gear. This is especially important for Assoluto cars on a highest gear - you'll have very slow acceleration otherwise.

5. Never use third person camera unless you wish to hate the game. Use rear view mirror to your advantage - block rival cars if they try to overtake you. You will gain a little speed boost if they bump into your car from behind.

6. Deep Drive is a fucking masterpiece:

I can fully drift that in the bayonet (most of the time) but really you don't need to slam the car as hard to the left as you normally would so you have time to do a hard swing to the right before the tyres grip. Or you do the easy way and do a grip run which just involves hard braking which is much more consistent and easier.

Disable PGXP perspective correct texture mapping in the emu as the game does it on its own (badly of course). If someone managed to disable this in game that would be great. As for wobbly polygons, I think they're mostly fixed by PGXP.
This game is so great to play now. Original average framerate is below 20. It's 60 with overclocking and doesn't need any patch, the game supports it natively.

>PC version also plays like NFS3 stuck in the arcade handling mode
No it doesn't, PSX arcade mode is much better. It's basically one of early drift-based games (like those that came in 2010s) but somehow exceeds them even. NFS 3 an 4 on PC - just a dumb plain driving with no oversteer.

I want takes on Gran Turismo 3

There is one real big problem that just wasn't an issue but the more you play it the more you realize how awfully inflated the campaign is. I'm not saying that no Gran Turismo has the problem of knowing youve won a race at the start because you have the best car, but holy fuck.

Every single event is just you doing 10 of the fuckin 11 tracks in the game, for 10-20 laps each in a sequence. I literally cant play this game anymore. It's one of my favourite games of all time, yet now I'd rather empty a dishwasher than play it

>> No.8309548

>>8309538
Don't have the best car then.
I haven't played 3 but in many other ones trying to complete the game in a fewest events possible is a fun challenge.

>> No.8309565

>>8309548
It's pretty difficult to challenge yourself because it becomes kind of arbitrary. First of all, the games designed smart enough that if you dont buy the best starter car at the start, the game just straight up gives it to you the best two starting cars within the first two events.

Also beat the game in the fewest events? The gran turismo games are completion based. Eg you only get the credits by doing all amateur challenges in gt3. Either you beat all the races or you dont, theres really no other method of completion

>>8307928
The really interesting thing in hindsight and to put into perspective how old GT3 is, is that they had this great game about driving physics and yet didnt actually know the optimal controller set up. The default accel/brake being x and square makes no sense apart from them being encouraged/forced to do it for the pressure sensitive buttons. Fuck actually using those pressure sensitive buttons, I have no idea why i stuck with it as as kid (default i guess) but you'd have to constantly make sure youre pushed x down all the way for full throttle and when youre just constantly jamming your thumb on x its horrible

also dpad has no justification being used over the left stick. i get the left stick isn't deadly accurate when you actually even use the sticks to turn (at least real ds2 doesnt seem as rigid as something like sn30 pro in an emulator), but you actually can muscle memory/feedback with your thumb touching the base of the analog stick to help you with how you use the stick. you can do it with the right stick too, park your thumb at the base of the stick and you can muscle memory your throttle way better, and you always know when youre at full throttle because you simply roll your thumb until it locks

In GT2 Japanese you can just straight too the final championship, you only need the licenses. In GT1 you only need licenses and 4 main GT events. But all optional evens are still challenging.
>>8309565
Braking on a pressure sensitive face button fells great. Pressure-sensitive d-pad is a great idea in theory too, as default and easiest position isn't full on unlike on stick. I wonder if any games make use of it, I should really try GT3. But it would be most useful for sims that refuse to give you proper steering assist, like any PC one before ACC.

Yeah, I've recently been replaying each game in the series, and 3 is probably the weakest (though I never played Sport). I was looking forward to giving the F1 cars a try, but I got sick of slogging through the same events over and over again. I've since started Gran Turismo 4, and think it's leaps and bounds ahead of 3 just because of the sheer variety of cars on offer. The most minor nitpick I can think of is that the S13 K's in 4 lacks turbine wheels while the one in 3 had them.

Also the menus are incredibly slow. Also the game lacks a manual save feature, the autosave on every car change makes it impossible to try out cars.
