Obviously you have to work you way up from the bottom.

Gradius V is one of the best STG ever, and it's only been released on the PS2. It also has modes that are gneerous and not as taxing and you can ease into it. Gradius Gaiden is also very good and it's also PS1 only.

Harmful Park is a parodius style game and it's pretty solid but with some work you can get into it.

Steel Empire is excellent as a first game. Not too tough but not too easy either and has a nice aestetic.

Arcade superiority is nonsense.

My intro was an Apogee game called "Raptor: Call of the Shadows"
Kind of a Euroshmup version of Raiden in a way.
A "Euroshmup" in a general sense usually means there's things like a player life-bar and an upgrade system.

People will often tell you to "start with the Greeks", as it were, but when it comes to SHMUPs, some of the originals are just incredibly dull and basic due to technological limitations of the time.
It wasn't until the later NES-era for arcade SHMUPs to start becoming impressive and more distinct.
I would say that pic related (originally named Thunder Force IV) is a great place to start if you want to get drawn in and experience some of those now-standard SHMUP "wow" tactics.
>Huge bosses
>Giant cool robots
>Giant gross monsters
>Badass OST, really hits some perfect high points at various levels/moments throughout the game
>Mostly visual storytelling, no scrolling dialogue boxes or focus on characters outside of what you encounter in battle
And it's now even this is considered fairly "basic" by what more advanced SHMUPs are doing.

Also: If you aren't that good at SHMUPs yet, and you just want to experience the full game, you can go into the options menu and set your lives to 0. Instead of starting with 0 lives, you'll start with 99.

R-Type Final, G-Darius. G-Darius HD coming to steam this winter BTW

>> No.8298153

I just like playing shmups with infinite lives. I can't be bothered to git gud enough to reach the end without losing all my continues.

The most frustrating mechanic in most shmups ive played is later levels/bosses becoming nearly impossible if you die and you all of your powerups. Meaning the only true way to really get far or beat the game is to do it in one life. R-Type was definitely like this.

>> No.8298161

Whatever you do, don't start by emulating by scene-favorite arcade shmups, those will just wipe the floor with you. Pick up some made-for-console titles, those are far more forgiving and open to learning the basics in.

That's only true for the hardest and bullet hell stuff. There's plenty of shmups on consoles you can run through a few times while only remembering a fear key points to clear it--like many old games.

Although it does vary. Do you have to route and memorize console shmups that kids were able to clear in the 90s, anon?

you might wanna read them first because some of these games have weird difficulty scaling that may or may not be intended to milk your quarters.

speaking of quarters, which you don't have to mess with thanks to emulation and buying your own cabinet, i recommend "credit feeding" your way through these games and then reducing the amount of credits you use on the game. the goal is a 1cc. if you keep reducing the amount of credits you're putting in, that's a pretty painless learning curve and it takes about the same amount of time.
