I’m an FM synthesis knower and I literally cannot find SNES tunes that the genesis would be unable to do passably well with the right techniques, but I can find SID tunes that I think would be straight up impossible with its 4-op FM and PCM. really makes you think.

actually there are some unexplored techniques that might work for imitating SID with 2612, like abusing detune to invert the wave and hold it there, so you can combine two opposite-direction sawtooth waves to have a PWM wave, but I don’t have the right tools to mess with something like that.

SNES has some really really well composed music, and I think that’s why a lot of people pick it. In all honesty the sound samples used are often compressed to the point of sounding muffled by 5 comforters in a reverby basement.

Genesis doesn’t use samples and doesn’t have the same compression issue (based on my understanding, correct me if I’m wrong) so the music sounds explosive and impactful. I think it’s a better sound.

Mega Drive music became more accessible.
Ultimately, what it comes down to, the Mega Drive has a decent quality FM synthesiser, the SNES has a poor quality and very bottlenecked sampler. The SNES might be able to do more styles of sounds, but it is never great at any particular sound. The Mega Drive has it's one distinctive sound, but it is very good at it. There is essentially no reason for one to use the SNES chip in this day, when a multitude of better sampler options exist, whereas the Mega Drive enjoys a litany of new music written for it's distinctive, crisp sound chip. And, although some fan conversions of Mega Drive music exist on the SNES, none of them even match the Mega Drive original, conversely, Mega Drive conversions of SNES music are consistently and categorically better than the SNES originals.

Because of two reasons. Amiga intro music takes up a huge 150-300KB of memory while during gameplay you'd need most of the RAM. Another reason is theres only 4 channels and devs are too lazy to go around it. Some games use 2-3 channels to play in game music. Turrican series could have both by switching one minor channel with sound effects. There's something charming and rewarding about music being played occassionally rather than blasting throughout the game though.

Thanks having no forced interpolation muffle filter as on SNES, and having far more than a measly 64 KB audio RAM to work with. Those two serious and debilitating flaws set back audio on the SNES far more than more channels and higher sample rate could make up for.

the SNES actually does have some features to support basic synthesized sounds but they were rarely used. it can combine two channels for FM with arbitrary waveforms, it can vary the loop point in a sample at the same time as the frequency to imitate oscillator sync, and it might be able to do wavetables with the right sound driver but I’m not sure how practical that is. so if you were trying to cover a genesis tune that features long evolving sounds or parameter sweeps that the SNES conventionally can’t do, it might not be completely out of options. the genesis is more fun to explore though because whenever you make a new sound on it you’re unconditionally adding to its repertoire and can use it in any song, while any sound you make on SNES will always be subject to compromise based on the other samples you’re including in the track.

vid related, typical SNES arrangements would have to cut the evolving synth sounds out of this because they don’t fit in a short sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRyy0yn2Qx8

Right, and my point is: so does is the Sunsoft, except it's a Gen 3 action platformer instead. A good one, but one nonetheless. And you have to admit it's one hell of a skin, you can really tell the people who handled the art for one had seen the show; the fact they included Freeze as the final boss and threw fan favorite Mad Hatter an awesome stage makes me suspect they might have even been fans. Way, way more faithful than the mishmash of action game assets in the Sunsoft game, which look like they could have been in any Ninja Gaiden type.

Me too I can't even tell what point he's trying to make anymore. If it's a defense of the MD's sound by saying people "fixed it" later, it's very dismissive of the fact this sounded amazing, and it's buying into the narrative of those shitters that say all Genesis games sound bad whilst having listened to three their whole life. Back then before people fiddled with anything, I remember being blown away by how the console sounded, playing Shinobi was like having a fucking arcade in my house, when all the reference we had was bleeps and bloops it was really impressive.

Oh man, the console versions of these sound weird to me. They're not bad, but I'm so used to the CPS1 versions, it's odd to hear these. It's an immortal soundtrack, some of these sound great even in the crappy GB version. At least it's not a complete butchering like the SNES SFA2 port. That butchering is just frustrating.

>it still manages to have great OSTs
It's the end result that's important for me, honestly knowing the SNES had a shitty, hard to work with soundchip by design makes me appreciate the soundtracks even more, Konami and Hudson for instance made some of my fav game OSTs for it. Also while it's awesome to see what people do with the Genesis chip unchained, I don't really see it as an argument as to which one was the best. If it wasn't back in the day and by developers, it wasn't competing or constrained, completely different context.

Plus I confess I am endeared to the stank some SNES soundtracks have. Some audio crust just makes my brain go "this sounds like a videogame". Soul Blazer's OST sounds very "SNES default" but it's funky as fuck.
