I didn't play Mutant League Football as much but I remember it not being as fun.

The only two sports games I truly enjoyed were FIFA 98 and Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis. The latter is a casual, fun game with stylised graphics but its fun as fuck with a second player.

Is it me or there used to be a lot more goofy and arcade oriented sports game than there is today?

These days it's like every new game is the same simulation with technically more advanced graphics and the current seasons players.

There are exception of course, like that famous racing/football game that was a big hit, but they seem a lot more marginal.

I don't know about other sports but I think soccer vidya players got baited by muh realism and the dominant games from EA and Konami are absolutely insufferable in that regard now instead of having simpler arcade mechanics.

big fan of the arcade soccer games which were programmed to only last like 4 mins a match and the goals played cinematics with your player freaking out screaming gol, presumably to catch attention in arcades

Companies just can't take creative risks on sports games now, graphical expectations and the associated costs kill any kind of experimentation. I probably played like 15 football/soccer games back in the PS1 days and they all had their own unique gameplay systems. The best anyone could really hope for is indie devs making some retro arcade sports games.

Only a zoomer wouldn't know that EA made plenty of genuinely good sports games back in the '90s. All the PS2 Maddens are good games as well. "EA bad" only started really picking up steam in the mid 00s which is why zoomers think it's the way they always were.
