The surge in interest in CRT tech has been nothing but a revaluation scam by boomers hasn't it? This image is a blatant fucking lie and anyone who's used a CRT knows that. I can only infer therefore that this is some sort of viral marketing scam to swindle the kiddies.

I don't think it's that exaggerated. I remember at the time around 2010-2012, when big flat screen LCDs were common, hooking up my N64 to the newest TV and remembering as a teen being disappointed by how bad it looked. I was genuinely in shock that the system looked much better on the old 10" DVD/TV combo in my room. And I was so excited to bring it out in the living room with the new TV and everything ;_;

Its not a big conspiracy bro. CRTs make “standard definition” content look better due to color bleed between phosphors. Its creating artificial filler data for your brain. Whats happening is that millennials are trying to hook up their old consoles to their modern flat screens and they realize 240p looks like absolute dogshit on them. HD content on an HD screen truly does look better. I play 4k blurays on my 80 inch 4k OLED and there is no universe where a CRT looks worse. I have the 42 inch sony CRT that ways 400 fucking pounds in my garage, they aren’t not comparable. However if you want to play old consoles or watch old shows, they legitimately look better on CRTs

>> No.8274749

Let me just use my guncon2 on my brand new flatscreen...
Oh wait

>> No.8274772

It’s not really a scam, 240p and 480i games were just meant to be seen on their appropriate low resolution displays of the time. Even DVDs look more colorful and vibrant on a cheap CRT than they ever would with an upscaler or DVD player with HDMI.
Of course you can argue that paying more than $50 for a CRT or buying a PVM/regular small CRT online is a scam, but for the most part people part with CRTs for cheap or even free.

I have multiple CRTs (including a PVM) and I would say that while I do enjoy them, playing on a massive flat panel is definitely more "fun". Even with a massive consumer grade CRT. CRTs, in general are more plug and play, however. They just work for the most part and if you're looking for that CRT style then you won't spend eons messing with settings to get a good output from a retro console like you'd have to on a new flat panel.
The real redpill is that it doesn't matter and the only thing that does is if you, the person playing the game, is actually having fun.

Obviously they were designed to be as sharp as possible while being as muddy as possible, it's a tough balance and every single sprite on every single game was made with that in mind.
Those devs back then clearly knew what they were doing making 7 games in a span on a year.
Just look at the Wizardry sprite comparison. Never you mind it doesn't look like that on a CRT, it's just because you are using Trinitron which you are not supposed to use, or you are using composite, which you are not supposed to use, or you are using the cables that I'm not using.
Also, you should probably pie RetroTink, it just makes an imagine so much better, you can really play it as the developers in 86 intended for it to be played.

In specifically these PSX case where you're mainly just removing the effect of dithering here, doesn't the dithering pass just not happen anyway if you set your emulator to 32 bit textures? Most games don't actually bother to store non-32bit textures because the console dithers to 16b even if there would be no change, so it saves no time. As a result a lot of games can just use full color undithered textures if your settings support it, no blending required.

CRTs are god tier for subpixel detail use in games, but sometimes the benefit you think you're getting is coming from a limitation you can remove in the first place.

Reminder that CRTs do not add detail, that's physically impossible and in fact the opposite is true. CRT comparison images are just really shitty.

Picrel is a CRT comparison and the same image resized roughly to how it would look under normal couch gaming conditions with 90s-era TV sizes.

Don't you ever stop trying to use the same retarded baits here and at /v/ indiefag kun? you gost buster there and here tons of times and this bait of yours never works.

I don't think NuPixel art needs that CRT look. NuPixel artist just don't understand why pixel art looked the way it did. They don't understand the limitations or the concept of a sprite sheet. They just draw their stickman figures and pretend it's pixel art because you see the pixels.

Your meme picture is definitely a lie, but some retro games really do look better on a CRT.

This image is a pretty good example on my old Sony Trinitron. PS1 Diablo normally looks like ass on an emulator and monitor, but with the natural color bleeding that comes with older TVs like this it actually looks great (for its age).

>> No.8284724

It's strange seeing people trolling or being serious about CRTs being a scam. It's about having an authentic experience not about it being necessary. If you like playing games using scalers or emulators on LCD TVs there's nothing wrong with that.

Yes, basically in second hand markets whenever something gets discontinued retarded investors flock from everywhere and buy it because they believe that no newly produced supply guarantees that prices are going to go up. They are the same kind of brainlets that will invest in various cryptoscams.

Yikes. Why didn't you just lie and say a girl let you touch her boob once? That would have been less cringy than admitting you only got up the nerve to ask a girl out once, and she said no.
