that site is even worse than here, somehow. big boards have a bunch of shitflinging monkeys and and the smaller, retro ones are either dead or have a contrarian baiter. ig the actual faqs section isn't awful, but most other sites for the game you're lookin for are generally better from my experience.

I have a ton of memories browsing that site. Old school forums in general. I cringe when I remember some shit I did. I actually wrote some erotic fanfiction and it actually got me an egf. I got to see tits. I was just like 13 years old. It caused so much drama I left forums forever and was afraid to socialize online. Somehow ended up here.

I'm so immensely glad those forums have been wiped out from existence. There is exactly one archive.org reference to that erotic post... Just my luck the internet archive crawled that site the day I posted it.

The boards got worse along the years
I hate bringing this up, but I just gotta, the mods are now SJW and will strike you down for a "wrong opinion" on it, despite not being even inflammatory, but the contrarian baiters trolling FOR the grain will get away with it scott free. Evidently, it's full of these baiters too
The moderation system also changed to a moderation voting system instead of an upward escalating method, so if you wrote something that'll guaranteed the mods will go "lol fuck this guy" instead of actually being a rule violation, you're guaranteed to lose
Basically, don't go to the boards unless you find a cozy community within a retro game board, in which you can now favourite a board and get notified of any new threads and even all posts. But even these have been dying badly compared to 10-15 years ago

I used to be a regular on NGG, their version of /v/, many years ago. It had its own memes and resident trolls, and much of it was hilarious to watch unfold, since you couldn't use explicitly inflammatory or offensive/racist language like you can here, so everyone resorted to subtle passive-aggressive slights aimed at a particular console, game, or fanboy grouping to get around that, until someone got legit mad and got themselves suspended or banned.

Like everything, of course, it became shit with time. I think I stopped going, along with GameFAQs boards in general, around 2012 or so.

The FAQs themselves are still nice, of course, though it doesn't always have all the info you'd want. I recently looked up an Algorithms FAQ for FFVI, and it's missing some shit, and there's no alternative on there.

Except when those boards were deleted, what happened is many of their regulars that didn't leave to alternatives just spilled over to every other board and spammed their bullshit there instead. moot brought those boards back because he felt it would at least contain them, but the damage was done, and they still didn't keep to their boards, thus allowing them to keep shaping this site's character and weaving its worldview. It's why even on a small, slow board with a relatively narrow focus like this one, you still get people bitching about trannies and jews.

The internet is so lame now.
You either get depressed virtual signaling assholes who yearns for the rope, or edgy post-ironic memelords who have more anger issues than Christian Bale. Both drive politics into every conversation. Both have the worst sense of humor.
The only alternatives are keeping to your friend groups or looking to the less popular sides of the internet, which more often than not are full of actual criminals and scum that might make 4chan seem tame. /vr/ at least has some semblance of good conversation at times, as rare as it might be. Hopefully, the social media bubble bursts a bit, or at least enough to bring back some semblance of non-crazy internet communities.

I feel conflicted because on some level, they might have eventually just left the boards entirely. I want to believe that bringing those boards back just gave them more power, but the internet was probably already leaning into that kind of shit for a while, especially with facebook and youtube radicalizing like crazy. Otherwise, you can get on a comfy fediverse server and blocks the big political servers you don't like, that's an option.

It was that age of skeptics and all that. Never got into that whole mess since I was busy trying to get my own apartment (was originally looking for a house, but not much you can do during a housing crisis). To me, it just seemed like the association of 4chan with outcasts lead to, in broad terms, the "outcasts of the outcasts" to try to take over the culture. And it worked.
Left for 5 years when it got too annoying. Some of the people I used to know that browsed ended up limiting internet use to local news, niche vidya subreddits, and game news sites like siliconera that don't do reviews or articlebait. Some on neocities or youtube. And as a teacher, want to know a secret? A lot of Gen Z doesn't want this, either. They just want some good news to stop feeling like the world is gonna end.

True, but mostly because modern games don't have any need for FAQs, and most are shallow enough that no one has anything to sperg about. There are some modern games, mostly JRPGs and DRPGs, which get them still, but most are designed to be beaten without any real knowledge of the systems behind them, and there is no benefit to "mastering" them like older titles which allowed you to learn them and minmax, which felt great.

I’m surprised mods haven’t deleted this thread yet but let me just get my blog post out before they do. I used 4chan from 2004 to 2011 then quit because I thought it was toxic. Ended up coning back here in 2019 because every other website had gone to shit. Constantly stepping on egg shells, bans for not worshipping trannies (relevant to retro gaming), every post just being a virtue signal for upvotes and likes. No one was actually talking to each other anymore. Its bizarre. They were just broadcasting empy platitudes. I rather deal with /pol/ types here because at least you can have a genuine conversation. The slow boards on 4chan are one if the few places where humans actually communicate with each other.

Basically I quit because some annoyance wrote some massive virtue signaling shit about the smash me too crap, which they actually spent time to read all of it. A good amount of these are usually laughably fake or grossly exaggerated and the rest are mostly private bullshit that would've never went out if the two persons had a better relationship with each others
I made fun of the annoyance for reading all this shit and writing a concerned mother like post "Ohh, we can do better, we should've seen the signs", it's like asshole, these people don't even know you and you aren't even in their community, what could've you even done? You weren't even fucking there?! The emptiest virtue signal, truly
Anyways, I got hit with a bullshit moderation about condoning/promoting child abuse, I was clearly not promoting jack fucking shit, and obviously, since everyone there became no fun faggots, I was worse than Hitler for calling his shit out

The problems is that even if it exists, nobody is using it
Here's the thing, do you want the experience of old forums and such? Go to facebook, no, I am not fucking kidding. There's some groups (and pages) that are actually pretty great
The problem? They're constantly always on the verge of being unlisted. Some groups having been unlisted 3-4 times already. Groups have specific rules to not have anyone use the report system, because the group is going to get yanked out
Yeah, I could use these sites to actually make a forum, but who the fuck would join? Everyone are on the big websites, but nobody likes it there either. We're basically fucked until Facebook really start massively pissing people off (actually, we're nearly there), but even then, all we'll have is zoomers that have no idea about how the old Internet worked and they'll just flock to another big tech website until the same fucking shit happens

I just want a place where we can discuss things free of political bullshit. It's sad but true that 4chan isn't this place anymore because of the swarm of those people who damn well know they can't post what they post in non anonymous places because it can have consequences on their friends, families, jobs, etc

Old /v/ had its issues, in the end there was so much trolling and trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls that it was impossible to know if a post was serious or not. But at least you didn't have "okay tranny" posts in literally every single thread. At this point those words should be banned, it's not like 4chan never banned words before when things got out of hand.

/vr/ doesn't have the worst though, when compared with /sp/ and /tv/ for instance

Did you ever read those Final Fantasy XII perfect game threads? Shit was wild when they first discovered perfect HP/MP RNG manipulation but you needed a specific model of PS2 to do it. When they discovered that, I personally gave up on doing it myself because I knew I didn't have the patience or understanding of those mechanics. I'd rather get 99 Zodiac Spears because it's simple, just a matter of time, but perfect HP/MP requires reading tables and charts and weird shit, almost like an IRL magic ritual. Maybe it has been simplified since then. Anyway, the Final Fantasy XII board seems relatively active still which is cool. The day it dies, I'll stop going to GameFAQs.

I doubt it, and that's really sad. I can't even imagine YouTube ever going down. There's too much money involved to let it just fail, and even if for some reason it does another video hosting site will just pop up. You cut off one hydra's head and two more sprout. We are doomed for eternity with shit like Facebook, Twitter, and all their derivatives getting people worked into hysteria after hysteria.

I never saw the world map. It would be years later that I gave the game another try. I barely got past that battle and from there, I spotted a weak point in the game's design - level 99 with all jobs mastered (except summoner which wasn't listing one, of which I thought was strange) was accessible in reasonable time before doing the Sweegy
Woods event for the game's story. In other words, I essentially went through the whole game at level 99 with essentially all jobs mastered. Even though I have well over 600 hours on the game clock, I have yet to complete the game's story....

Only tangentially related but I miss the days of stupid, nonsensical rumors for games. My favorite example that still makes me smile is finding a "cheat" for Ocarina of Time sometime around 2001, 2002. It laid out a very specific sequence of actions you could take to open a secret grotto in Kakariko Village that contains a functioning assault rifle that Link could equip. It was some crazy shit like talk to this NPC five times, run in a circle, drop exactly 12 bombs on this very precise pixel, stuff like that. I can't remember the site this was on, but it was a popular one and this "cheat" was listed right next to legitimate tips and secrets, which made it all the more humorous.

It would have been expensive but imagine the havoc publishers could have caused by releasing a game like Zelda where something like 1% of cartridges had a modified ROM that allowed for some weird obscure cheat like that. In the case of Zelda, maybe 1% of cartridges actually contained the Triforce as a collectable item. Some random Timmy on the playground would find the Triforce, tell all his friends, and no one would believe him because it wouldn't work on their games. It could create more extreme versions of the rumors we actually got; people would offer outlandish (but true) claims about how to obtain X in a game, but on 99% of cartridges it just doesn't work. But the 1% of people who are able to pull it off will swear by it and continue to spread the information, meanwhile everyone else is calling them liars. That would have been hilarious.

Just start pinging random people whose names you do remember and eventually you'll get leads. Before you say you're not that autistic, you definitely are so there is no point delaying it. Here is a template you can use:

>Hi, you may not remember me but my name is anon and I went to 4school as well. The reason I'm contacting you is that I'm currently trying to track down a circle of friends regarding an incident involving a dinosaur, a baby and a pipe that occurred in mid to late 2001. I'd do it myself but I don't remember any of their names except anon2 who is my most important friend. They've made it much harder to find people you don't really know on facebook now. I was able to find you because I specifically remember you and I thought you could help me. If you remember their names or still know them could you let me know?
