>>8279023
No shoehorning; the game was marketed as having a broadly romantic story. In fact I'd say it didn't really go as far as it could have in that direction.

The combat is actually pretty simple even if you don't really care about actually understanding the mechanics. Plus, the collecting aspects were very accessible and easy to leverage into results: "Big magic goes vroom"

Totally agree about the settings though, I don't think any setpiece actually stuck with me at all in the way the other games did.

There's nothing really much to say about this game, I mean it's a really huge step-up from FF7 but due to how much it's predecessor was praised heavily at that time, it just became underwhelmed. I would've put this game on probably my top 5 favorite RPGs but the junction system makes you scratch your head on countless hours trying to understand how it fucking works, but yeah it also becomes an advantage of the game itself because it becomes a replayability. I think they just released it on a wrong time, and the junction system just adds it up.

>> No.8279062

>>8279032
The corridor dungeons and cinematics were introduced fully realized since VII. I do agree about the lack of world map though, but the "death of the medium" thing is a bit hyperbolic, this is just jRPGs ffs, they barely count as anything more interactive fiction with pretend action in it.

In the end it's just the illusion of depth, kind of like with Vagrant Story. If you're a bit anal it's probably annoying not fully getting it, but otherwise you can play the game to basically full performance with only a marginal practical understanding of how it works.

The love story is quite literally shoehorned in and I'm not sure how anyone could say otherwise. All of a sudden a flip fucking switches and he goes from nothing at all towards her to "I need u in my life bby." It comes completely out of nowhere and was really jarring because I didn't want to romance her and did everything beforehand to try and get someone else.

I think we can agree to disagree on the combat though. I don't think it's super complicated, but obviously it's not pretty simple if people's biggest complaint about the game is not understanding what the fuck to do in combat properly. Perhaps they're being tards, but I don't think it was explained too well. Reminds me a bit of Xenogears and deathblows

I agree the love story is hamfisted; but that's not the same as "shoehorned" at all. The fact that things escalate randomly and the whole thing generally seems written by somebody with relationship experience limited to shojo manga doesn't mean you get to ignore that's going on at any given moment.

FFVII got a lot of interest from the romantic subplots and they clearly doubled down on that, trying to appeal to a larger audience with the full high-school-age cast as well; you may remember that the promotion and coverage was very much focused on the central relationship. Even the widely circulated Dollet Mission demo had Rinoa replacing Selphie.

To be honest i'm still new to the world of RPGs, but albeit I played the previous FF titles like the FF6 using a GBA emulator on mobile but I never really got to finish any RPGs due to my anhedonic brain that makes me want to delete the game and play again and this cycle just repeats over and over again. I never had a console back then except for the GBA back when I was six (only played the arcade ones because I was too young to understand such things) and the PSP back in 3rd grade. Nonetheless I made a lot of fun playing videogames on both of those handheld consoles as a kid. I never got to play RPGs on those both consoles though until later in life when I had my first phone that I instantly downloaded a GBA emulator and now my recent $100 phone is powerful enough to run PS1,GBA, PSP (with constant frame drops), DS, and some more.

Back to the main topic, I've played the FF8 but only for a few hours since i'm still currently focused on beating FF7 (currently on disc 2 with 40+ hours of solid playtime) because like I said above you need to really be in depth on FF8 because of it's gameplay. Nevertheless I loved FF8 more than FF7 if it wasn't because of it's brain-damaging junction system.

It would be hamfisted if there was more leadup to when he professes his undying love for her out of nowhere. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but Rinoa is forced in as his truefound love interest randomly during one mission and then that's what the norm is going forward. To me, that fits the definition of shoehorn to a T. It isn't that things escalate, it's that they explode almost randomly and is forced onto the user aggressively.

I don't want to split hairs over semantics here, just giving my view on things. I'd say maybe I need to replay it a third time to get a better view, but I'm never touching this shit again lel.

Depends on how play. The illusion of choice you're given when you interact with Rinoa actually made you feel it was hamfisted but for me the experience was different, even more so after the Fisherman's concert and the reunion after they split up to bomb the fuck out of the military complex. Square's biggest mistake was allowing you the player to not have any interest for Rinoa and not changing the script as a consequence of that. If you do play the game according to the "right" choices, the love-story doesn't feel so badly setup.

Probably not but I love the game. Lots of cool stuff and I liked playing as a young mercenary "commanding" his soldiers. I also like Squalls early personality where he doesn't take anything seriously except being a tough guy, and how he starts acting like a retard over some dumb bitch. It's actually very realistic in that regard.

It is the game that got me back into jarpigs after a 1996-2000 hiatus.

>> No.8281392

>>8281378
Also, people bitch about the story but I find the vagueness to be awesome. You can interpret it in a lot of ways.
For example-
>The game is actually just Squalls dream, turned nightmare, after getting knocked out by Seifer's sword blow while training. He already knows Rinoa and other people from past memories and adventures and they play a part in his dream. In the end he has to settle the score with Seifer, then beat a corrupted love interest and a GF he had junctioned in his memory at the time.
>You win, and he wakes up, Seifer was expelled for being a faggot and is doing his own thing, and hid other close friends are there to welcome him back to reality.
That's just one interpretation of several you can make of FF8's story. It's awesome. The kinda fool you are in your own psychology can dictate what you see in Squall's experience.

Pretty much this.
FVIII was the first turn-based RPG I actually tried to play and I didn't stop playing after a 15 minutes, and it was mainly because of the concept.
I remember I started loving the game and how you were training to be this elite soldier. The landing on Dollet was fucking great, just like trying to kill Edea. Then it all went downhill.
I didn't even care about the draw or junction system, because I didn't know how to break it so it wasn't that bad, but I lost interest in the game as a whole. I finished anyway, but I hated how they added so much crap to the story, and the original concept was left behind. The first disc was definitely the peak of the game. Disc 2 also has it moments, but disc 3 and 4 are a fucking mess.

The whole game feels like you're cheating. I have no idea how you're actually supposed to play it. If you avoid the random rule, the card game has like a 99% win chance. If you keep characters at low health and just switch until they get their limit, you murder everything. These are just two things that require no complex tricks or preparation, just playing the game. It's ridiculous.

The best elements FF8 brought to the table were unfortunately not carried over, that being Quetzacoatl/Brothers replacing Ramuh/Titan.

The best way to play the game is by ignoring the card game and the drawing mechanic. Just refine items you win in battle, don't try keeping levels low.

>> No.8289531

>>8289016
No, the best way to play FF8 is to use the Ragnarok Rebalancing Mod. It uncaps the amount of spells you can Draw, makes high level spells difficult to acquire via cards, and makes it so that 1 spell has the same stat benefits as 100, so you can actually use magic without growing weaker. Also removes level scaling and gives each party member a role specific stat growth and locks ultimate weapon materials behind end game side quests.

>> No.8289663

>>8278736
The problem with the game is that the gameplay is just fundamentally broken. You have 3 real ways to play the game, and they all suck and result in derivitive mindless gameplay.
You can fully break the game, by abusing the card system and going low level, this requires hours of tedious card playing, carding of enemies, refining items so you can refine magic into better magic, and the end result is you get to a point where you intentionally ignore the entire gameplay aspect of the game outside of forced boss fights which you 1 shot anyway.
Option two, which I guess would technically be the "right" way to play is spending hours in battles drawing magic while you fight the random battles the games gives you as you progress. This is basically just a more boring way of option one, with the addition that you'll be scaling the enemies with you making the battles take longer and longer unless you spend more and more time drawing.
And finally you have objectively the worst way to play which is grinding, which will leave you underpowered in comparison to the enemies, but they game gives you a get out of jail free card for this with GFs, which can easily carry you through the entire game as long as you're content spending hours upon hours watching their unskippable animations.
So any way you play the game, it sucks. It's simultaneously way too easy no matter how you play it, while also being extremely tedious no matter how you play it, and your supposed motivation to keep doing it is one of the worst written and told plots in media history filled with unlikable single note characters, horrible and random idiotic plot twists just to have them, and completely nonsensical events and plot threads that just seem inserted for absolutely 0 reason, lead no where and are never referenced again.

Except you don't have to break the game, you can play a moderate amount of cards to get a few key mods, get enc-none in disk 1 and then play though the story acquiring what you need mostly from boss fights and exploration, which is really fun and makes the pacing so much better. Nothing says you have to sit in place and stockpile spells until you're OP

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a low-level, no-enc card-based run of FFVIII is one of the most enjoyable experiences the franchise has to offer, you just have to check your autism occasionally and remind yourself you can keep playing through the story even if you haven't stockplied 99 ultimas and maxed out every stat. Lol confirmed for never having actually leveled up in the game. A level 100 bite bug is still a bite bug, a complete trash mob. A malboro is dangerous at any level because it depends entirely on whether you have status def x 4 or not. Ruby Dragons are weak to sleep and have a built in AI nerf that keeps it from using Breath if you have a dead party member, and so on. The game comes with a fucking vit nulling spell and a literal leveling down command, how much of a braindead pussy retard do you have to be to fear leveling up? You just want to hate the game for any reason.

Anon, a high-level Ruby Dragon will obliterate your party with a Breath if you go into the Deep Research Center unprepared. Leveling up will fuck things up if your stats are lagging (no use of ***-UP when gaining levels), there is no denying this. I actually find that very interesting in Final Fantasy VIII because it breaks the concept of a perfect game but actually provides a decent challenge.

I do agree that the anon you're replying to has a shit opinion though. Every single Final Fantasy game can be destroyed very easily after your first playthrough and even more so if you're abusing in-game things not intended by devs (like the Junon alarm trick in Final Fantasy VII, for example).

So far I'm amazed. It looks good on a 4K screen. HOW it does so blows my mind. The FMVs should be unbearable.
Anyway, people above are right, FF games are stupid-easy to break, but only if you choose too. Conversely they can be extremely challenging if you linit your options during play, like no items/gfs/junctioning in FF8.
I personally like getting OP'd, but only at the end of the game. Until then I play normally enough.

That's pretty vague, anon. You don't need minmaxed stat growth to survive Breath, because the game has character abilities like Vit+40%.

>> No.8298865

>>8298836
That's what I'm talking about. You got in with base VIT not having any idea how powerful Breath is, you will get your party destroyed. Vit 40% is not something you're likely to pick for all party members unless you know what you're doing and in very specific situations - noobs just rolling in Deep Sea Research Center without any knowledge can (and will likely) get fucked in their first attempts.

>> No.8298912

>>8298865
That's an awfully specific scenario and not really an argument against VIII's level scaling.

>> No.8299185

>>8298912
Stats are exponential. What that means that is that as enemies level up 100 STR normal attack isn't gonna cause twice the damage than if it were 50 STR - it will likely be a three or four times more at least. Breath is a very pratical example because of how damage wrecking it can be to your party and you can easily measure it by messing with your VIT status. But the same applies to pretty much everything else in regards to level scaling. Final Fantasy VIII has a very unusual stat system formula compared to previous games.

The magic drain and junction system was kind of a mess. It made the game way too easy. When you get the chance you drain a creature and the right junction on your weapon destroys stuff.
The graphics were impressive for the time and it had good moments.

The mechanics really aren't even complicated.

Each character has their own spell stock, and you don't equip armor or weapons. (weapons can be upgraded at specific intervals which permanently raises the respective character's strength stat.) Spells are equipped to stats, the more spells are equipped the stronger the stats are, and each stat has unique spells it matches to which increase the stat more than others. (e.g. Cure increases HP more than Fire, Protect increases Defense more than Blizzard.) By default characters can't equip spells to stats. To equip spells to stats, you need to equip GFs to the character, GFs can learn passive abilities that do many things, including allowing stats to have spells equipped to them. Each character can have multiple GFs equipped. The enemies in the game level scale with you, levelling up marginally increases stats, getting stronger means getting more spells, GFs, and spell-equip abilities. You can get spells by drawing them from enemies, finding them in the world-map, or refining them from items or cards you get by playing the cardgame with NPCs.

I just summarized the entire game system from memory, and what confuses most people, and I haven't played this game in years. (coming up on 7 to be exact.) It just confused people since they expected spells and equipment to be like most RPGs. It's different, but quite similar and reminiscent if you've played them. (you just equip the GFs and spells to stats instead.)

I'm a hardcore fan with FF8, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. She immediately said, "You know you could live with us forever.." I gave her a confused look and she continued, "We understand that you live on earth and you REALLY wish to live here". I then said "How..How did you know?" She then giggled and said "Because we've been watching you, silly!"

This was a dream come true and I almost cried right there. She then said, "I talked with Headmaster Cid and he agreed that you would be PERFECT for SeeD, you just have to do...one thing". She then held my hand and looked deep into my eyes and said "...You have to kill yourself for the transfer to work correctly." I then gave her some questions, "How long do I have before the deal expires?" She then said "Cid said 3 months.." I added by saying "What's the most painless way?..." She giggled again, "Suicide will require pain buuut...if you want it quick...Get a gun and a nice shot to the head works.

I then agreed and she gave me a kiss on the forehead, "I know this will be tough but once it's over and done, you'll get to live here!" I then woke up and this was last week and i purchased a gun. I might actually kill myself because that dream just felt too real to be fake and my life isn't doing so grand.
