Anyone own a bunch of these? I own the official gun, but I can't stand it. The sights are crappy, and they're so raised up in comparison to the gun because of the stupid VMU slot that it's a hassle to use. And the handle feels like shit, it's too thin and the trigger is in the wrong place.

Are any of the third party options better?

What a strange question. But yes, I have a bunch, and others.
I have no problem with the sight. This is a fucking toy meant to be used 5 feet from the target. If you have a problem with that it's not the gun. The location of the VMU is idea for all those games they never made that used it for something. Can't fault the hardware designers for other peoples failures. The main thing I don't like about it is the lack of features.
Madcatz is the best. Although I fucking hate the lights. Either disconnect those, or install a circuit to make pew-pew noises as well so you can ironically experience the whole 3+ look and feel they were going for.
I also have a few models that have recoil. These are great for pissing off anyone you live with. One of these also has a fake laser sight. You could replace this with a real laser and calibrate it for pinpoint accuracy so you could finally hit a TV at 2 paces.

I prefer a nicer sight picture, and the combination of the oversized back sight and the incredibly short distance between the sight posts makes it pretty terrible to use. But the real problem is the bizarre shape of the gun, it's incredibly uncomfortable, like top 3 most uncomfortable light guns I've used. If the Madcatz has a sensible grip I'll buy that and unsolder the LEDs.

Madcatz is a little less bulky, especially on top. Has more features, and not jut the gay lights. And I like the "dpad" as it's not really a dpad but more of a knob that you can really get a grip on while holding the gun. Also doesn't have to retarded lip at the top of the grip that makes the official one so uncomfortable to use. Not the best light gun ever made but the best overall for the DC.

Dreamcast has the worst official light gun quite possibly ever. I know everything can't be a guncon but I swear the fucking zapper is more accurate then the dreamcast light gun

The proper term is: "8-way hat". "Hats" were really common with flight sticks for the PC. It's a great idea for a light gun.

The madcatz trigger switch sucks, but some fellow on ebay make replacements. Mine just broke or I wouldn't have known. I have yet to solder it in, tho. I have a bunch of soldering to do so I'm just waiting to knock it all out at once.

Thought this was edited before realising where the muzzle is actually supposed to be.
What a terrible design.

no, lightguns on dc are a mess for whatever reason.

The "Hat" on this control is very un-hatlike. it looks pretty strange even more so because it's mounted so low and has a very short throw. But it works very well in this application. Much better than your average flight stick jank would.

>>8279082
All these things are cheap toys. Moving parts are going to break and need to be repaired/replaced.

If you use the sights while playing light gun games you're doing it wrong

Nah, brah. You gotta hold the site/scope as close to your eye as possible. And run around that way with the whole shit blocking your face. Just watch a movie with navy seals dumbass.
The only time you don't use the sight is when you're holding your oversized gold-plated handgun sideways, as the developers originally intended. If you'd ever watched a movie with black people shooting guns you'd know this.

You know. I only have the MadCatz Dreamcast gun, and it does have a definitive 8-way hat. But looking at the Dreamblaster, or whatever the official gun was called in Japan, it looks less like a hat, maybe just a 4-way one?

The official controller has a dpad. Just like any bog standard controller. Madcatz has a 4 way navigation switch. Not my term, that's simply what switch manufactures call the part. Flightstickfags can call it an 9001 dildo turban for all I care. At the end of the day it's 4 tactile switches and some plastic. And a screw to hold it all together. Because I guess they decided to make their own switch than buy a quality off the shelf part for pennies more.

You can slot a PuruPuru Pack into the gun for some rumble. It is a shame it has to be that way since America has a gun problem, so they had to look more and more outrageous such that the chances kids won't get shot by the police for having these devices will be decreased. I agree the stock Sega ones lack good balance, and would like a better one too.

Very aesthetic glue gun, I must say.

Does the weird region lock affect the MadCatz gun as well?

I put the vibration pack in mine and it was shit, at least in Virtua Cop 2. Only activates when you get hit, and it doesn't even activate half the time.

I really like the DC's vibration in general, though. It works in a lot of games, and the way it's placed in the original controller really improves the feeling over Sony's mediocre built in affair. I should really buy an N64 rumble pak at some point.

I don't think peripherals are affected.

I think US games are just checking that the controller identifies as third-party and other versions had no equivalent check, so it's not like other regions required Sega's gun if that's what you're asking. Europe and Japan games will work with third-party guns.
